After almost a 25 year absence I have just managed to get hold of this amazing movie again. After watching it three times I noticed in the credits that the executive producer was Michael Moore! A quick check on IMDB shows it to be another Canadian born American and not who I thought. Still This Michael D moore also has an impressive pedigree.
Anyway am thrilled at this movie has anyone seen it? It doesn’t look dated in its effects storyline or acting. Why was it never a huge thing? I just love it and although I know my taste is not mainstream has anyone else seen this? (And in a weird way I thought Ika the girl was hot hot hot!)
I saw it when it first came out in Philly. I remember this as I was in Philly for the HS national chess championship. I thought the movie was very good when I saw but I don’t remember it all that well now.
As to Ika being hot, there is no reason on Earth not to think the nearly (mostly) naked and always beautiful Rae Dawn Chong was hot. Of course I was only 15 at the time.
I have not seen it since and I know it was slow at times but it was also compelling to watch.
Just curious, I also really enjoyed the “Gods must be Crazy” when it came out. This was the same time period. Did you like this one too?
I doubt many studios would green light or distribute such movies todays.
I don’t recall the tree scene. I think I should see if Netflix carries “Quest for Fire”.
Funny how those things pop up, isn’t it? Several years back, when I was working my way through Best Picture-winning movies, I was watching Chariots of Fire and did a double-take at the name of one of the producers. Dodi Fayed? Could that be the same Dodi Fayed that died in the tunnel with Princess Diana? Turns out that, yep, it could.
(I declare this to not be a hijack because it’s a response to something in the OP and, erm, both movies have “fire” in the title. yeah, that’s it.)
I haven’t seen this since it came out, but I loved it too. I remember being pissed about Clan of the Cave Bear because it should have been made by the same people who made QFF. Instead it was Movie of the Week crap.
QFF made me a big Ron Perlman fan before all the other '80’s chicks jumped on teh Vincent bandwagon.
I’ll admit it’s been a couple of years since I’ve watched the movie and I don’t have a copy handy. As I recall, Naoh had been wounded and Ika was treated his wounds. Then she bent forward and appeared to be performing oral sex on him (whatever she was doing Naoh seemed to think it was great). Maybe my mind’s just in the gutter but I remember at least one reviewer who reached the same conclusion about the scene I did.
Oh, it was a great flick! No comprehensible dialog…quite a tall order.
Rae Dawn Chong, yow, she’s beautiful!
Remember the scene where the main guy is taken “hostage” by the other tribe and they arrange it so he’ll impregnate each of the women? He finishes one, and another stands, they rest just scoot over on the bench to wait their turn.
I watched the DVD with commentary by Ron Perlman and Rae Dawn Chong. She mentioned “I’ve never minded being naked”. Perlman said, “Oh, yeah, the guys on the crew wanted me to thank you for that.”
I always knew that was Rae Dawn Chong, but never knew that was Ron Perlman. I really need to watch that movie again, too. Thank you for reminding me of it.
