I’m just curious. For those of you who watch the modern episodes of Saturday Night Live, what do you think of the mini cartoon they sometimes show “The Ambiguously Gay Duo” ?
This post is better suited for IMHO…
Yer pal,

Some gay people would say such comic characterizations are insulting, similar to African Americans being portrayed as “Sambos” in racist cartoons. These racist cartoons mocked black Americans, displaying them as something sub-human with attributes to be ridiculed. Aunt Jemima, of pancake fame, was once portrayed as a grotesque black woman.
I don’t think that is the case. I don’t seem this particular cartoon as harmful to the gay community. The whole cartoon is based on innuendo, with the characters never admitting their homosexuality just hinting at it.
We all know that the whole Batman & Robin relationship sounded suspicious from the beginning. Come on. Bruce, a millionaire, gets Dick to be his ward. The two dress up in silly costumes to fight crime. They live together, and from my knowledge Bruce has been unsuccessful in dating women, and remains single. I don’t think Dick even dates. The SNL AGD cartoon just makes fun directed at these comic book characters.
We have a gay organization that points out defamation against gays called GLADD. The organization presented an award to the creators of South Park for their cartoon “Big Gay Al’s Big Boat Ride”. Big Gay Al is as stereotypical as you can imagine (bandanna, Hawaiian shirt, lipstick, earring, etc). Still GLADD appreciated the cartoon for showing that you shouldn’t outcast someone for being gay.
Truer words were never spoke.
Off it goes.
People still watch Saturday Night Live?
I haven’t watched SNL in years, so am unfamiliar with this. But I do remember the two gay guys on “In Living Color.” They were absolutely hysterical. But with anything like this, you have to consider the source. If Jerry Fallwell were the producer I, and probably most people, would be very offended.
We all know the stereotypes associated with any minority, and we’ve all known a few individuals who really do fit the stereotype. But we’ve got to look at these things in context. Are we beaing laughed at or laughed with? I can’t think of any minority that doesn’t have a sense of humor about this.
I know we gay people are supposed to be sensitive, but we’re not that sensitive.
Oops, my mistake :).
Well yeah, I think everybody should have some sense of humor about practically every part of their life, thier gender, age, race, religion, and so on, and so on. But there’s harmless fun, and there’s inappropriate and/or mean spirited ridicule, and even though this cartoon isn’t mean spirited, I was just wondering if those of you who are gay though of this as harmless or inappropriate humor, that’s all.
I thought the AGD was pretty funny. PLus, I know a lot of people who work for that program are gay & probably some of the actors, so I know they must have discussed it with them first so, I think its done okay.
Better than ILC, where they have the Handicapped super hero (gross) or National Lampoons, Underpants for the Deaf (If anyone has the magazine with this, Id like a copy of it to show to our sign class)…Underpants for the deaf was pretty funny.
