I’m late to the Supernatural party, but I started watching it a couple of months ago because a new friend with similar tastes said it was his favorite show – and the first several seasons are on Netflix – so I figured I’d check it out. I’m now 7 episodes into Season 4, and totally hooked.
And I have a question about the tattoos…
In Season 3’s “Ghostfacers!” episode, Dean and Sam hand out pentagram pendants to the Ghostfacers team as protection from being possessed. When someone asks where the brothers’ pendants are, they both show their tattoos.
As far as I know, that’s the first time the tattoos are ever seen or mentioned, and they haven’t been seen or mentioned since – at least, not yet. It’s possible that I missed some exposition (during the first two seasons I got in the habit of sometimes doing other things while the show was on), but I felt like I paid pretty good attention during that season, and particularly that episode: did I miss something? Or did the tattoos actually simply appear during that ep and then not get shown/mentioned again for a while?
If I didn’t miss anything, do we ever see the backstory about the tattoos?
NOTE: I know this show is old and it can be difficult to keep track of what information got revealed when, but I’d appreciate efforts to not spoil any major reveals/plot points. Please. If it helps at all, I just finished “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”: Sam just used his powers to kill Samhain, despite being warned not to by Castiel and Uriel (and he just got an extra-serious warning from Uriel). So I know that Mary inadvertently sold Sam out when she made a deal with Azazel to save John, I know that Azazel had a super secret end game (though I don’t know anything about it yet), and…well, I can’t think of anything else major that has been revealed so far. This seems to be the season for stuff like that, though!
I’m not a superfan, but I have seen all the episodes. I don’t think there is any backstory given on the tattoos.
I would assume it is standard equipment for a hunter and John might have arranged for their tattoos when they were fairly young, esp. given the family history with demons.
Nope, they got them late. When asked when they got them, they replied, “Not soon enough.” Sam had been possessed by a demon prior to getting them done.
I think by the time they got them both of them had been possessed at some point, and wanted a permanent solution. Too often on the show medallions and other objects are simply tk’ed away by demons.
An idea that they really should have explored a LOT more fully.
I’m way more emotionally invested in this show than someone over the age of, say, 20 should be. In fact, I recently acquired all 8 seasons available on Blu-ray and spent the summer rewatching all of it instead of doing anything productive. Everyone else should hurry up and get up to date so that we can discuss it all when it starts back up live.
I haven’t seen the latest season and am beginning to finally lose patience with all the angst. I do like the show, though 70% of the reason I watch it is Dean and his beautiful, beautiful eyes.
My cousin got the tattoo on his chest. I was really surprised because I never thought of him as able to take much pain; he’s kind of a wuss. It looked good though and I kind of wanted to get it too ( too much!).
I thought that S9 was a pretty decent one. A few really strong, standout episodes and all that, but I think if you’re getting weary of the angst, that’s pretty much a main ingredient in this show from beginning to end. On the other hand, the ending of S9 throws a pretty decent curveball at the viewer…
And your cousin actually GOT THE TATTOO?? Wow, that is a level of dedication I cannot dispute.
I’m not a fanatic but I have watched a lot of episodes. Is there any real consistency to the Supernatural universe? My viewing has been too sporadic to really judge.
I just hate when the brothers don’t talk to each other. The whole universe is against them, they should do well to remember that. At least they have cut that plot down some of late. I will almost definitely watch season 9 when it’s on Netflix!
Yes he got the tattoo and just as big as theirs, on the chest. Now I wouldn’t really get a tat from a show but if I were going to it would be tiny. Not so his!
I am just grateful the boys are not much younger than me. I don’t need to feel skeevy lusting after Jensen ackles, who is 36. I am 38.
Yeah, I’m at the point where I sometimes put off watching recent episodes of other shows and I watch Supernatural instead…and I’m 42.
The new friend I mentioned in the OP – my best friends’ 24-year-old nephew, who is staying with them for the summer and who I get along with surprisingly well – has said that wants to get the tattoo. He doesn’t have any yet. My advice was to get a tattoo of something more personally meaningful first, live with it for a year, then get the show tat if he still wants it. Luckily, he seemed to think that was a good idea.
It’s very consistent in how the guys are manipulated by demons. Any time a Winchester is taken hostage, humanity is pretty much f*cked. And it’s annoying that they acknowledge they’re stupid about it and they’re still stupid about it. It’s on backburner/binge status for me - I don’t watch real-time, but when the previous season hits Netflix I catch up when there’s nothing else to watch/read/do. I haven’t seen since Dean returned from Purgatory grousing about how Sam didn’t sell his soul or risk the planet to get him out, though he specifically said “Hey, don’t do anything to get me out, that’s how we always get screwed.”
