Randy Moss going to the Packers?

It looks like it’s going to happen.

My local sports-talk radio show is talking like this is a done deal. The article above states that the Superfreak has been talking to Favre about it over the phone. I think that Favre may actually have a lot to do with it. He saw Randy torch his team for a lot of TDs when he was wearing the Purple, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Brett wanted a proven, deep threat receiver to throw to in what might well be his last season.

Moss has gotten some negative press from time to time, but it was kind of overblown. He is cocky, that’s for sure, but most of the guys he played with in Minnesota said he was a pretty good locker room guy and that they liked him. He just has a way of running his mouth off at the press. He’s not perfect, but he’s not T.O. either.

Moss was one of the most exciting players I ever saw in his first several years in Minnesota. His numbers were ridiculous. His first six years were better than Jerry Rice. I don’t know how I’m going to feel about watching him go for 70 against the Vikings but it should make the Packers more interesting to watch.

I know Moss has had a drop-off in productivity in Oakland, and he’s not the same player he was 5 years ago, but I think part of that was dissatisfaction with the team and crappy quarterbacks. Green Bay may reinvigorate him and Favre is a QB he has to respect.

What do you think, Packer fans? Are you ready to forgive him for the mooning incident? What’s going to happen if he does the Lambeau leap?

Wow…that’s the kind of deal that only happens once in a blue moon.

What? Someone was bound to say it…

As a Packer fan living in Minneapolis I’m kind of hoping they get him.
My optimistic side tells me he may have been humbled by his time with the Raiders, his antics really weren’t that bad (c’mon, mock mooning? it’s not like he flipped them the bird), and he just needs a chance to reclaim some fame.
My pessimistic side tells me he’s past his prime, injury prone, and will cause too much of a media circus for sleepy GreenBay.
I know most die-hard Packer fans are against it and have already voiced it loudly but I think Favre may be a good judge of character and if he’s okay with it I’m okay with it.
Moss (as well as Culpepper) used to play basketball at the gym I used to work at in St. Louis Park. They were both really, really decent guys off the field and would let anybody join them in a pickup game on the court.

Moss used to do a lot of volunteer stuff in the cities, especially with kids. I’m not talking about team-affiliated stuff or photo-ops, but stuff he did on his own, when the media wasn’t watching. He did a lot of other stuff too (like buying houses for needy families) which he did not want publicized and took pains to keep out of the media. He had a really good reputation with schools and the social service community here and was reputed to be especially passionate about helping under-privelged kids. A lot of this stuff i know through the grapevine from my own volunteer work. Moss didn’t like it to be in the papers.

Eeesh. This isn’t the first time it’s come up. I gotta say I’m for it. All things aside, Moss is a hell of a reciever. Favre hasn’t looked his best the last couple of years, but he’s had very little in the way of targets. When Favre was in his prime, he had some great receivers.

I think Moss and Farve will get along. If Moss keeps Farve happy, he gets thrown to and he looks good. Everyone wins.

I just really want to see Farve go out on a winning season.

ETA if he does try a Lambeau Leap, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him get punched in the throat.

That’s a good deal for Oakland - they get rid of Moss, who didn’t want to give them any effort, and they get a quarterback (ANY quarterback) out of it.

As a Packer fan my only real issue is with the fact that there are bigger needs on this team than wide reciever. Donald Driver is already an elite reciever, Greg Jennings was #3 in recieving yarda mong rookies last year, and he missed a few games iwth injury. Their running back posiion is suspect, tight end is lacking, their secondary gives up too many big plays.

So I am not opposed because of anything in particular about Randy Moss, just that we don’t really need him. I mean we can use him, but we still have big holes that need to be filled.

Two years ago I would’ve said, “No fuckin way.” But now I’m older and more greedy.
As long as he respects the team and the fans I won’t have a problem with RM in GB.
I just hope he’s got some left in the tank.

BTW, this has been talked about for several weeks on the sports shows locally, so I’m not holding my breath until the contract is signed.

I think it’s a nightmare. The Packer offense is not based on the long ball, and Randy Moss is, for the most part, only a deep threat. He does not play at 100% unless he knows the ball might come his way, he never has. I don’t think the Packer offense is going to throw to him enough (in his mind) and he will pout and become a liability.

The mooning thing is no big deal for me.
Its the “work when I feel like it” attitude that bothers me.
If ha actually puts effort then I’m OK.

But we have to give up Rogers? Who’s the backup QB? Fan sitting in row J seat 14?

Brian

Gotta say, I’m glad he’s not coming to my team. Maybe he can redeem himself in Green Bay. I think he’s still got the skill to play well, but I’m not sure he has the will to do it…

I think his “work when I feel like it” was taken somewhat out of context and was said to reporters and not his team. He was expected to sprint down the sidelines for every play as a decoy and was getting tired out quickly. So on a few plays he didn’t bolt like lightning when he knew it wasn’t coming to him and they called him on it. He basically told the reporters to stuff it.

Aaron Rodgers didn’t prove to be all that valuable when he stepped in for Favre late last year and got injured right away. I’m sure there’s a few backups out there at least as good as him. Starting QBs though? They’re getting scarce.

Correct me if I’m wrong and I don’t have a cite for this, but didn’t Moss get into some trouble when he ran a meter maid off the road after she gave him a ticket in Minn. a couple years back? I just vaguely remember some part of that story.

Moss got a totally bad rap from the Vikings and worse from the Minnesota press - they treated him shabbily. I always liked Randy, and I’m pissed that we let him go for nothing. He’s an amazing player - I’d give my eye teeth to have him back. And tho’ I hate the Packers, I’m glad for him that he’s going somewhere with an excellent quarterback. Even better that he’s going to our rivals and will show Minnesota what we let go. We deserve it.

Yeah, not one of his smarter moves but again the reporters made it more dramatic than it was. Meter maid was trying to write him a parking ticket, he trys to drive off, she steps in front of his car to stop him, he bumps her leg.
Not too bright but quite different than running her off the road.

The Minneapolis PD said the meter maid got over-zealous and jumped on the hood of his car (He was trying to creep through an illegal turn after the meter maid told him to stop. She jumped on the hood and then fell off). Initially, the media made it sound like he had intentionally run her down, but after their investigation, the Minneapolis cops said this particular meter maid had a history of being over zealous and concluded (I guess by interviewing other witnesses) that she had jumped on his car rather than being intentionally “bumped” as was first reported. Moss eventually pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to obey a meter maid.

He also had a joint in the car but he said it wasn’t his (one of his dawgs must have left it there  ), and he wasn’t charged with possession.

He should have stopped when he was told, but he didn’t intend to hit her with his car.

As a huge Bears fan, I would personally hate to see Moss with the Pack (may Lambeau burn to the ground! ** ).

Gangster Octopus, I agree that Driver is an elite-ish receiver. If I remember correctly, he’s more of a burner (like the Bears’ Berrian, but a better route-runner). I shudder to think what Favre would do with a receiver that could burn AND post up a smaller cornerback (which I remember Moss doing ALL the time). We’d need to clone Tillman.

Moss would be a perfect target for gunslinger-Favre. In the 4Q, he’d be getting a huge amount of the attempts thrown his way.

Now, let’s talk about A-Rod coming to the Cubs!

**May it burn down slowly, with no-one inside, with the full understanding that there would be a nice new stadium…I’m not an Ogre!

Bad idea. The Packers have a good receiver in Donald Driver, a potential break-out in Greg Jennings, and will probably get a pretty good season out of Koren Robinson (who has has problems of his own). They need to focus on other positions (including, as much as it pains me to say it, the future at QB).

Moss may have something left in the tank, but he’s never had much of a work ethic, and he has a huge locker room cancer potential. If the Packers struggle this season like they did last season, does anyone think he will maintain a positive attitude like the rest of the team did last year? Will he be a positive influence when he decides to take plays off, or sulks around like a crybaby if he’s not getting enough passes? He has the potential to create a lot more problems than he would solve. I’d love to be proven wrong.

Too many people point to Andre Rison as an example of how this sort of thing could work out for the Pack. But Rison came in a year when the Packers were bound for the SuperBowl, and was gone not long thereafter. Who couldn’t behave for a few weeks in one season when you’re on a team full of Pro Bowl caliber players and you’ve got a great shot at a ring?

And when it comes down to it, purely as someone who grew up in Green Bay and has been a fan all of his life, I hated him when he was with Minnesota, and I’d rather never see him in a Packers uniform.

I’m not saying I’d NEVER want Randy Moss on my team. If he were desperate to play football and I could get him for a song, sure, I’d take a gamble.

But if nothing else, I’d know it was a gamble, and I’d have to be ready to cut my losses quickly.

Look, Rany Moss may not be evil (heck, he’s a very lineable, funny guy), but he’s trouble. He always has been. NOBODY keeps him around very long. He’s not a guy who got into a spot of trouble ONE time, for something that wasn’t really his fault, and has been unjustly condemned ever since.

He wore out his welcome fast at Florida State. He wore out his welcome in Minnesota. And now he’s worn out his welcome in Oakland.

Need I point out that it’s VERY hard to get in Bobby Bowden’s doghouse, let alone Al Davis’? Florida State and the Oakland Raiders have long had reputations as outlaw programs where anything goes as long as you produce on the field. Just how big a headache must you be to get kicked by of Florida State or the Raiders?

Now, I admit, SOME of the incidents in Moss’ past have been blown out of proportion (the mooning incident, especially- he was just being playful and having fun, as far as I could see). And some can be explained. But when you see incident after incident after incident (and, of course, it’s NEVER his fault!), you have to wonder if he’s more trouble than he’s worth. I’m all for second chances, but I’m less enthusiastic about 4th and 5th chances.

Corey Dillon got a bad rap in Cincinnati but showed in New England how valuable he could be. MAYBE Randy Moss will do the same if he gets a chance in Green Bay.
But no team should try to build an offense around him or spend top dollar to get him.

Oh lovely, another self-absorbed player to play for the glory of the Pack. Just what we don’t need.

I hope Favre manages to finally miss a damn start this season so he can go home and stop bringing the team down, interfering with the idea of re-making itself into an actual contender.
