Me thinks the gentleman doth protest too much, and I never thought I would call Demo a gentleman, look what you made me do Rasa. Here’s an easy way to tell Demo and Silver apart: Garfield and Woody have never flirted with Demo…I think.

Bhagavad Gita! I should’ve known. When I first saw this sig line I 9seriously) thought it was Klingon… :o
Odie: Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind. And, if Demo keeps it up, he’s going to be a gentled man.
Demo: I may be many things, but calm, dishonorable, and submissive I ain’t! And thanks for reminding me, I haven’t gotten your check this month!
scratch1300: Alas, no, my sig is Sanskrit, not Klingon. Though now that you mention it, it does vaguely resemble Klingon I guess, if you add some snorts and growls and sneers in there.
Well~
Sanskrit, Klingon, French, Spanish or Latin-
Rasa is a dollface, and we are lucky to have her.

Here here.
Even tho’ she doesn’t do laundry…
Scotti: Aww, thanks! Right back atcha.
dpr: Telling on me??? See if I take your vegimite advice anymore!
Here is Doobie, in a nutshell.
I’ve been on the board since May of 1999. i forget how I found the board, but i think i was looking for the answer to a question, and a search engine gave me the Straight Dope homepage. I didnt even notice the boards until about a month or two after I started reading the archives, and Cecil’s weekly columns.
Anyway, i’m 21 years old. I’m finally not a ball and chain to my friends and now they’re all either graduated, or too busy to go out anymor :(. Oh well, screw them, I have chat at least :D. I still live with my parents, though i’m starting to feel those “i need to move out, but it’s too good having free lodging and food” feelings. i currently have no job, but since my twin (fraternal) brother got married and his wife has three kids from a previous relationship, i now have four more people to buy crap for, so I need money. Besides, my computer is old (thre years), and I need a new one.
I go to school at Cal State Monterey Bay, and I am a Spanish major. I just started in on my upper division classes, so the workload is getting bigger. I’m not taking more than 12 units from now on because with 16, i’m starting to stress out, and am currently way behind in almost all of my classes.
After I graduate, i want to try to find a job around California so I can save up money for grad school (if they’ll take me :)). I do NOT want to leave this state unless I get a VERY good job offer (i’ll live lower end of middle class if I can stay in the state I love, just as long as I can do some fun stuff on my off time). I’d like to go to the Monterey Institute of International Studies, but the tuition there is $20,000 a semester! (it’s a very good school, and they did pay all $1,300 of my tuition for a summer long language course I took there). But, i’m starting to think that i’d like to try and use my language degree in the bay area, possibly with tech companies, doing something. But, i know there’s a lot of different opportunities for language majors. So, i’m still not too sure what exactly I want to do, but I dont expect to graduate for another two years or so (I REALLY want to go overseas for a year to work on my fluency).
Something that you may know already, although I keep finding dopers at bashes who dont, is I am gay (woah, sounds just like when I came out to my friends :D). I havent been with anyone yet, which probably surprises some. I just dont feel any great need to find a BF, but well, if it happens, it happens. Not out to my family yet, but that’s soon (no time limit). My friends all know, and thankfully they took it quite well. I pretty much told the dopers i’ve met first, then worked on my friends.
Some of the things I like to do is draw (i do it all the time in class), invent new scripts (i have an entire Indic type script I made up for a constructed language of mine). I also construct languages. My first one was Indonesian/Philippine inspired, and looks a lot like it’s related. The newest one I have is called Montreiano, which is a Romance language. It’s supposed to look similar to Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. In other words, a relative of them all. I usually draw plants, buildings, and scenes inspired by morbid and dark things. I also do a lot of gardening and have done all of the gardening in my parent’s yard for the past 6 years or so (it’s finally coming along). My preference is for native AND tropicals (i’ve mixed temperate plants like viburnum and a flowering plum, with tropicals like canna and bananas (a very cool blood leaf banana). So, my yard is a mix of different plants, but I think they work well (i’ve kept to greens and purples/reds in the foliage, and i think that’s what ties the plants together, even if they are from very different climates).
Musically, I like all different types. My core musical tastes tend to be house, trance, some techno. I also like most things centered around Spanish guitars, jazz influenced music, Salsa, Arabic, and lots of other different styles. One of my favorite groups is Portishead. My current favorite song is “teardrop” by Massive Attack (and I think Portishead has a credit on it too), which some of the lyrics are in my sig.
So, there you have me in a nutshell. I’m almost always in Chat later in the evening, so you can sometimes catch me there, if you’re up around 9 or 10 PST.
Hey!!! I didn’t tell them you were the Underwear Queen!!!
[sub] oooops [/sub]
Hey, thanks for stopping back in, Doob! I’ll forgive you for taking so long since you’re in school.
Oh my GOD! You’re GAY? NO! ::flees the building::
Kidding! I lurked here for a bit before posting, so I picked that up somewhere already. S’okay by me, I’m half a queer myself.
I’m envious–you sound like you know where you’re going and what you want to do. Heh, at 21, I sure as hell didn’t. I’ve been out of college a year and a half and still don’t!
I hear ya on keeping to 12 credits/units in college. My senior year first semester, I took 21. That’s 7 classes. While living with friends that were in a band. Let’s just say that sleep was something that was unbeknownst to me that semester. Being an archaeology major was tough because a lot of our upper-level classes got cancelled all the time because there were only 10 of us in the major, so 3 of the classes I needed to graduate came around finally that semester. Had a hell of a good time though, and I survived.
You create languages and scripts? That’s so cool! I’m jealous. I love languages. I’ve been sorta trying to learn Sanskrit for a while now, but not seriously. I kinda dabble. I’d love to see what you’ve created. It’s the Indic script that drew me to Sanskrit in the first place.
I’m going to have to make it out to “the left coast” sometime and visit y’all. Why is it that all the Dopers I’ve gotten friendly with live in Cali? Hmm…
That was that long? Well anyway, i dont usually get on the computer til about 7 pm or so. Sometimes I respond earlier, if I have time :).
OMG, youre one of those half gays! Noooooo! :). Hehe kidding. I figured you fell somewhere in the gay spectrum, since you said you were the prez of the GLBT club on your school’s campus.
Well, i dont even think i’m all that sure as to where I’m going either. I have something of an idea, but i wont know til i come to it lol. I just know I want to stay around here near the bay area. I also think it would be very cool to work in the travel industry, but I havent really looked at what there is thee for us language majors.
Yep, 16 credits suck! Ugh, i cant do this. It worked when i was in lower division classes that didnt have a lot of course work, but upper division classes require too much of my time to take more than 3 a semester (i have to keep 12 credits to keep my financial aid coming in). I also had a class I wanted to take get cancelled. It was on Spanish language history, and i guess they didnt have enough students. I’m kind of glad. Otherwise i would have been taking 20 units!
Thanks! I consider it fun. I just find it all fascinating. f course I will never have a complete language, but it’s just something for me to tinker with. the Indic script I have isnt scanned in, so i’ll have to do that sometime, but I think it’s pretty. Of course, it’s more South East Asian, so it looks nothing like Devanagari (but, it works the same way). It’s descended from Grantha, and looks a lot like Thai, or Philippine, depending on the script style :).
Yes, you must :). I think maybe all the dopers you’ve gottne friendly with are from California is because we’re all just the bomb!
Oh my god!! Doobieous? You’re gay?! So I suppose you’re just using me for the tax benefits then, right? I thought I really meant something to you…
::snicker::
Doob: Well, all in all, I’d have to say you’re pretty kick-ass. You create languages for fun, and my favorite Bay-area Dopers think highly of you. Plus, you’re “married” to Silver Fire.
Darn, Silver, didn’t mean to burst your little bubble. Of course it wasn’t the tax credits.
and found a very interesting person. Hi!
Una (who is picturing a female Indiana Jones at a dig right now…)
Hi Una!
I do have a cool hat I wear occasionally when I dig… not as cool as Indy’s, but I do share his intense dislike of snakes. And I have yet to be chased by NAZIs or have scantily clad women hanging off me like Indy always does. Damn. Guess I gotta try harder!
Of course, silly! Why get married in the first place? Sheesh. I’m also using you cause your sense of clothing style is so similar to mine and we’d be like a matched set!
And thanks rasa, I do hope i’ve left a good impression on them (and you). God forbid there’s someone out there who doesn’t like me (even if there’s a few I don’t like :D)).
Doob, you sure have left a good impression; I’m impressed with your credentials. Demo, Silver, dpr and oldscratch have all vouched for you, so in my book, you rock. And so do they. Even oldscratch, even though he has a life and blew me off all weekend. And dpr, I’m sure you’ve been dying for an update–I did laundry this weekend!
An archaeologist. How very cool. I majored in anthropology in college (which explains why I am a veterinary nurse now), but if I had gone on to grad school, my choice would have been biological anthro. When you make it into the “big time”, and get to dig in some far away, exotic locale, give me a call, ok?
Cyndar: Is New England your idea of far away and exotic? I’m into New England prehistoric/Contact-era archaeology, it’s what I love. Makes finding steady work kinda tough, what with the ground freezing for 1/4 of the year and all! So when I make it big here in New England, I’ll give you a call.
Well, we can start there, but I think for things to be really interesting we need to leave the country. even though I have been exposed to the realities of the world of anthro, I still harbor those Indiana Jones fantasies…
Alas, most archaeologists bear no resemblance to Indy. At least none that I’ve met. It’s a field dominated by old men and eccentrics, which makes it interesting. My college advisor’s favorite line was always “Archaeology attracts flakes!” (Kind of an “in” joke, we find lots of flakes from stone tool making… haha… ok, so it’s bad archaeological humor!)
