It’s actually pretty Larsonesque. Not one of his best, but still Larsonesque.
First thing I thought of was “A Bizarro cartoon”. I chuckled.
Yes, I think so. That’s what’s missing though, it’s just a word joke now, Larson could do the cowboy and the dogs much more justice. The cowboy’s expression and attitude would be a big part of the joke. Larson probably started a lot of cartoons with a 4 joke like this.
Would Larson have used “dogies” or “doggies”?
Not sure, but I think maybe he’d have the cowboy on a horse playing a guitar and singing ‘Git along little dog(g)ies’ to a whole herd of dachsunds.
There should be a bunch of 15th century rulers of Venice fighting in a yard, and the cowboy leaning over the fence saying “Get along, little Doges”.
Change it to a whole yard full of miniature Neil Patrick Harrises clobbering each other, and have the cowboy saying, “Get along, little Doogies.” Then you’ve got something.
OP chiming in.
I agree with most every comment posted (except, perhaps, the Neil Patrick Harris idea).
Oddly enough, it first came to me with Rodney King saying the line to two dogs fighting. I abandoned that tact for various reasons, including that it would become too serious a cartoon, it would be hard to recognizably depict Rodney King’s image, and it felt too ‘cluttery’.
Also, I definitely think it should be doggie vs. dogie. “Doggie” is cuter, “Dogie” is too obvious.
Looking forward to what tomorrow’s shower will produce.*

*answer: absolutely nothing
ETA: I agree, the quality of the drawing would make or break it
I think you might be right about this.

OK, what kind of intitution would have a sign that says “Abandon Tact, All Ye Who Enter Here”? Hooters?
Cartoons are like gossamer and one doesn’t dissect gossamer.
Not a fucking clue about any of the possible references in this hypothetical cartoon. It’s a 1 I’m afraid.
(Someone explain?)
There’s a cowboy song that says in part “Git along, little dogies!” aka, calves get moving in the direction I want! Someone could then be telling two squabbling doggies to get along (work it out amongst themselves).
Or instead of the cowboy in the alternatives above, have some cows (calves) saying to the herd of dachshunds “Get along, little doggies.”
But this changes the key part of the joke, that ‘get along’ carries two meanings.
In other words, I thing the doggies should be fighting.

Pet store sign in Casper, WY.
"Special Today Only! Dachshund Puppies $25.00 each
Get a long little doggie!"
I dunno. I think it’s too on the nose there. Maybe “Can’t ya get along, little doggies?” (If I could figure out how to spell caint-cha in a way that looked normal, I’d use that.
Cute…not great, not terrible…cute. The art would determine the success more than anything.
