RatInDaKitchen - You're off to a bad start here, asshat.

It started in this thread. I tried to offer some suggestions to help you get going on the board. Ok, so you didn’t like my last sugestion. Did you simply ignore it? Did you say “I’d rather not do that, but thanks”? No. You decided it would be really keen to blast into me like I’m some kind of idiot and try to make me feel like a shit for trying to help you. Yeah, I got a little snotty at the end of that thread, but I really did not appreciate your remarks. Especially since it was a problem you could have solved yourself if you’d bothered to read the FAQs. One of the mods told you in that thread that your behavior was out of line, but did you listen?

No.

In This thread you pulled the same crap again. Yes, I was wrong. You could have pointed that out politely, and all would have been fine. But once again, you had to go and act like a total asshat. I’ve always tried to go by the rule “attack the post, not the poster”, especially in GQ where bashing others is particularly frowned upon. You’re new here, so perhaps you aren’t aware of rules and mores of the SDMB, but you’re not off to a good start, IMO.

I may not be the smartest or most well-liked poster here, but I’d like to think that, with few exceptions, I’ve been generally polite and have given good, useful and correct answers to many here; and when I am wrong, I usually own up to it. I hope you can take a lesson here, and become a decent and useful member of this forum. But if you’re going to continue to behave the way you have to others the way you have to me, then fuck you.

Humm. He’s acting like a bit of a dick, isn’t he?

Well, he’s been warned once. I assume he’ll either get the hint and play nice, or get banned. That’s usually how these things go.

Well said Q.E.D. Methinks he, and not you is the one to “take a message board way too seriously.” :dubious:

Not off to a good start fer sure.

Actually, Q.E.D., I’ve read many of your posts and find you to be a great source for accurate information. You’re also pleasant and not easily offended.

In addition, possibly reinstalling his operating system was your last resort suggestion in the referenced thread. He responded as if you’d said it was the only thing he could do to fix his problem.

RatInDaKitchen needs to get his act together and stop flying off the handle. He’s a turd. You rock.

Q.E.D., while he was an asshat in the later thread, you lose a bit of credibility by berating him for not checking the FAQ for his problem, when you didn’t check the FAQ when you tried to help him with the problem. If it was so obviously a FAQ situation, why didn’t you catch it?

We’ve run across each other in “debugging computer problem” type threads, and you usually know what you’re talking about. But advising somebody who may be “computer challenged” to “reinstall the OS”, without mentioning the care you have to go through to not lose any and all important data on said computer, is fairly irresponsible. Plus it also assumes a Windows-based OS, as Linux et al are less prone to having problems that can be fixed via reinstall.

I wouldn’t have mentioned any of this if you hadn’t let him get a rise out of you. Pitting is a bit extreme in this case, IMHO, the little “report this post to a moderator” button seems like a much better, more mature response.

So, QED, are you gonna put a link in the 2nd thread for him to find this one?

Perhaps, Lord Vor, but as Windows-based OS is far more common than others it was a valid assumption to make. Furthermore, simply performing a reinstall does not, in general, lose data or settings, and the registry is kept intact. In any case, I was merely offering suggestions in order of likelihood of success. As far as not suggesting he check his settings, a previous poster already had mentioned that, so I felt it was unnecessary, since I generally try not to assume incompetence in others. As for pitting vs. reporting a post, I like to try to handle a situation on my own, without involving the poor overworked mods.

Is that considered appropriate, alice? I had considered it, but was unsure about whether it was OK to do so.

Well, I can totally understand his point. Everything I’ve ever read or heard says that you don’t have long to make your move and what you do will affect you for the rest of your stay. If you even think somebody’s testing you, or if you spot an opportunity to create a fight you think you can win, you have to attack as quickly and with as much force as possible to ensure that others respect you. If you don’t, they’ll come after you and make your life a living hell.

Oh, wait, that’s maximum security prisons, not message boards.

Never mind, then.

The trick is, to kick someones ass the first day, or become someones bitch.

Oh wait, that’s federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison.

2trew and Joey G - you guys! snort

And for the rest of you, especially sperfur, thanks

Hey, don’t snort at me, It’s not my fault that I can’t pass up a good Office Space quote.

Yeah, well I didn’t appreciate being told to reinstall my operating system, which could have potentially damaged my computer permanently, to solve a problem you clearly knew nothing about. I sit here lurking, reading how pissed everybody gets when people chime in with totally wrong answers, and then you suggest wasting hours and hours of my time and you don’t know what you’re talking about. Does that make you some kind of idiot? I would say so.

How fucking dishonest can you get? Oh, if I’d “bothered” to read the FAQ. Nice argument, except why didn’t YOU bother to read the FAQ? I’m new, you have over 1600 posts and not only didn’t you not read the FAQ, you almost screwed up my computer by giving me bad information. In fact, if you re-read that thread, you’ll see that NOONE mentioned the FAQ to me. Oh, and FTR I didn’t read the Mod scolding until just now.

Wrong again, not really a shocker. I’m running OS X under Linux. But I appreciate you making assumptions that could damage my computer. As for offering suggestions in order of likelihood of success, that’s also bullshit, since had I followed your advice and wasted a few days reconfiguring my Linux box, I would have had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

More dishonesty. The only thing someone mentioned before your post about settings had to do with cookies, and I thought he meant my Browser cookies, which I deleted. TubaDiva corrected my SDMB settings remotely without ever mentioning a FAQ. Are you honestly saying you KNEW about the FAQ, but felt mentioning it was unnecessary, then went on to offer “necessary” help, like reinstalling my OS? Incredible.

And then you post the 100% wrong thing in your 2nd link. Again, I have been reading this board and reading how people are giving people the wrong advice and others are getting pissed, and yet you post that with no “I could be wrong” or anything of the sort - as if it was a fact. Do you even care that you could have made Dragonblink spend money that wouldn’t have solved his problem at all? I was reading that thread, came across your name which I remembered, and thought “Holy shit! The guy that almost screwed up my computer is telling another poster to go BUY something that won’t solve his problem!” Can you blame me for letting the OP know that you were wrong?

So now we come to this thread. I’ve come in contact with you twice, you were DEAD wrong both times, I called you on it, so now you make a thread in the BBQ PIT about it? About two comments directed towards you, which you happened to deserve, since you were wrong? Talk about taking this message board too seriously - Jesus Christ! You’re made of some tough stuff, ain’t ya!

I’m new here, so I may not know all the rules - I deserved my warning, my insult was in the wrong forum. What’s YOUR excuse for giving out false information as fact in General Questions and ATMB without qualifying it?

I’ll continue to behave that way towards other members that give out the wrong information as fact in General Questions without even saying “I could be wrong”, then never go back and admit they were wrong in that thread. I’ll continue to bitch someone out who suggests that I reinstall my OS to fix a problem, which incidentally wouldn’t have fixed the problem. I’ll also continue to defend myself whenever someone calls me as “asshat” and takes me to the Pit over TWO negative comments made towards them. Which they deserved, because they were wrong both times. In doing so, I believe that I WILL become a decent and useful member of this forum.

And fuck you too.

Um, Rat, I’m not sure you’re getting the whole SDMB vibe.

You don’t like someone’s advice? Fine, ignore it.

Frothing at the mouth about it, and being obnoxious to boot, when someone was really just trying to help doesn’t go over real big here, particularly not in GQ.

Also, stalking other posters into different threads to be snarky to them (which is what you did with your 2nd post to QED) is really not very popular either.

Chill out.

Really.

Hey Rat, may I politely suggest a switch to decaf?

I don’t know.

That was some pretty spectacularly bad advice. Which is not to say that the reaction is warranted but… Man.

Reinstalling an OS can permanently damage a computer?:dubious:

Except you don’t seem to realize that a computer isn’t like a toaster. It’s more like a car. A small problem can be indicative of a much larger one looming on the horizon. Some people like to pre-emptively solve those problems.

Besides, it’s not terribly difficult to reinstall an OS… it just means you can’t use your computer for half an hour while everything sets up. And how the hell can it “permanently damage” your computer? How inept are you?

I’m thinking that the decaf would be very helpful. No one told you to reinstall your OS. The bolding is mine.

It was an option. It was actually the last option Q.E.D. gave you in his advice. The advice in which he admitted:

Now go somewhere quiet and cool. Clear your mind. Take a few deep breaths. Think to yourself, “I’m a kitten, you’re a kitten” a few times.

Feel better now?

I think both of you are a bit over the top. The original ATMB question was address by the FAQ, RatInDaKitchen overreacted to your suggestestion which were off the mark, got slapped by a mod, and now you’re pitting him for it.
