RatInDaKitchen - You're off to a bad start here, asshat.

Sorry, I forgot about the second thread link in the OP, but I still think the first thread is, effectively, a wash with no one party 100% blameless.

I’m with the “both of you are getting way too worked up about nothing” camp.

It is true; computers and operating systems are a very dangerous combination.

cough Her problem. D (May I call you D?) wasn’t so much making me spend money as remarking that Microsoft would, or rather they would if I were writing these essays for one of my German classes rather than my French classes. And yeah, D missed the bit where it said French was included. I pointed out the omission, and all’s right with the world.

I must admit, I’m wondering what your setup is, that reinstalling your OS would permanently damage your computer … Windows is practically made to be (slowly and painfully) reinstalled at the drop of a hat.

(Man, I gotta put a bow on my username or something, maybe a little pink dress …)

Huh? Permanently damage? You show me one instance of a computer being permanently damaged by a simple OS reinstall alone, and I’ll eat my PC.

Well, that is what the FAQs are for: to help the newbies get the most out of their SDMB experience. And again with the screwing up your computer? Once more, not possible.

So, you’ve got Linux? Though the reinstall advice doesn’t generally solve Linux issues, it won’t hurt it, either. Besides, I wouldn’t have had to make assumptions if you’d given a bit of background information when you posed your question.

There’s a huge difference between letting someone know a previous poster was wrong about something and just being plain snarky about it. Correct me, fine, I have no issue with that if it’s done politely. I admitted I was wrong about that in my OP here. That really wasn’t the issue at all.

First off, the advice I gave you was just that, advice. I did not tell you that what I suggested would work, they were merely suggestions of things to try if all else failed. Secondly, “calling” me on information I’ve posted was never the issue, it was how you chose to do it. Get that straight. Finally, last I heard it was no crime to take a message board seriously. I’ve come to know and respect many of the posters here, and I’ve tried to respect them back. Respect. Look it up, sometime, it’s a useful concept when dealing with others.

You make it seem as if I deliberately set to give wrong information to dragonblink, but that’s certainly not the case. I believed the information I posted was correct. Once again, I admitted here that I was. Get over it already.

You won’t last long here, with that attitude. It may have"only" been two comments that I’m pitting you over, but seeing as you only have about 10 posts under your belt, that makes a pretty high snotty-comment ratio. Again, as I’ve said before, I have no problem with being told I was wrong, as long it’s done politely and respectfully. That is the issue here. And “bitching someone out” for making suggestions you don’t like certainly won’t make you popular here.

Care to clarify that a bit? The advice I gave wouldn’t have solved his problem given the now-known root cause, no, but it certainly wasn’tbadadvice, in the sense that it would have cause his system harm.

Hey rat you piece of shit, go crawl back to whatever rock you crawled out from under.

Christ he really has it out for QED.

Your posts have never been anything but helpful.

I wouldn’t do that, PCs, although they smell of orange juice, are actually made of electricity, which is why it is dangerous to keep them in the same place as Operating Systems, which are made from water and milk.

No, no. Electronics run on smoke. Haven’t you noticed when you let the smoke out, the thing stops working?

QED, in my job I’m often called upon to give computer advice and Rat sounds like some of the sarcastic sanctimonious jerks I’ve had to deal with.

Yes, sometimes I’m wrong. Get over it. This is why I’ll only help friends and acquaintances when they drag me to the computer kicking and screaming.

I was really frustrated about the login thing. Some guy strolls in and tells me to reinstall my Operating System, which nobody here thinks is the wrong thing to suggest. Did I overreact? Sure. You weren’t sitting here being asked to log in over and over and over again, only to read that in order to post here, you should start bulldozing away at your computer. Nobody EVER mentioned a FAQ to me until this thread. So I move on, start reading threads, and here’s this same guy, posting the WRONG information again, so I say something. Was I out of line? Sure, I guess. That doesn’t seem to matter, though.

Two strikes, and it’s OFF TO THE PIT! TWO posts!! And here comes everyone attacking me because I used the word “permanently.” Nobody even SUGGESTS that maybe I have a point about anything else that I’ve said. So much for trying to defend myself.

Have any of you tried to restore a machine running OS X under Linux? It may as well be a toaster. By permanently damage, I mean never get it back to where it was before. But I see that because I used that one word, you’re all over me, ignoring everything else.

Fine. I’m wrong. Q.E.D.'s behavior was spectacular, I’m way out of line for suggesting otherwise. In fact, I’m stalking him. In FACT, I’m a “piece of shit.” What is wrong with this place? So much for that thread “a plea for tolerance and understanding.” Whatever. I’ll just leave, so you can all get back to running off the next guy. What newbie in their right mind would want to hang out here?? There’s some sort of cancer here. I’m gone.

Too bad that the SDMB doesn’t allow avatars, or you could make yours one of the pics of you in that bodice.

I guarantee that no one would ever call you “he” again.

Place yer bets here! Place yer bets! Odds updated every ten minutes! Place yer bets!

The smoke happens when you mix the water, milk and electricity, or ‘Computer’ and ‘Operating System’ as we somtimes call them.

Sheesh, I thought you said you were an administrator!

I reinstalled my operating system once. The old operating system got drunk and came back with an axe and smashed up my tower. It was horrible.

Well now… Assuming that you’re in complete earnest and not just here to yank chains, perhaps you are getting a bit of a rough ride, but then perhaps you should have mentioned a little more about your system - it is quite fair to assume that a new member asking technical questions is running Windows. So QED gave you some advice that may or may not be appropriate/accurate/useful, yes you overreacted, so you got pitted.

Sulking won’t make it better though.

Sure, next you’ll tell me I don’t have enough cornflakes in my power supply? Well, I dumped in a whole box yesterday, smartypants. :dubious:

Wow. Some people get pitted because of only one post. You should be proud.

and

You are absolutely correct. It is a big job to reinstall your OS if you don’t even know which one you’re running.

eh?
