I still maintain that if every active user chipped in a dollar a month or so, we’d have more than enough to take ownership of the whole damn site and outsource it to a reliable server farm. Or, we can just keep endlessly complaining about it.
It’s possible that TubaDiva is right and the problem may be due to the old VB software being hacked and beaten over the years like a rented mule, but then we’d have the opportunity to upgrade it to something modern. And maybe even get rid of Sultan’s Theme in the process. And if the problem is denial of service attacks, I think a professional service provider like Amazon Web Services is well equipped to deal with it.

You are a guest, which, if I’m not mistaken, indicates that you are not chipping in. Also, some of us are below the poverty level and can not afford even a dollar a month. Yes, some of us are that broke, getting by on ancient computers and sub standard servers.
I agree about the if we all chip in $1, but I doubt that’d happen. I believe, by far, that most Dopers are free Guests. (Me, BTW, I pay the annual $5 because it’s worth the entertainment value. And I accept and respect those who want to continue being free guests. That is the agreement each of us made when we joined and/or re-upped.)
BTW in the 1980s when Harley-Davidson motorcycle quality was dropping and their bikes became a joke under AMF ownership, the employees banded together behind Willie G. Davidson, grandson of one of the founders, to buy back the company from AMF. Ever since then, Harley quality has been very good. Harley builds an excellent product. (and AMF = Adios, Mother Fckers!* :)) So maybe we can do the same thing but I think we are far from that.
And, I am c&p-ing the errors now not to be “endlessly complaining about it”, but to continually report instances of it happening. It is my hope that Jenny / TubaDiva and hopefully others are working the issue, to correct it.
I am the OP and I started this thread on 07 Dec, and we’ve been dealing with this situation for nearly a month now.

I got this in the trivia thread game when I pressed Post Quick Reply. I only pressed it once, but in getting this error message my post also did get submitted.

That’s the second time in two days for me. Not counting the v-e-r-y long load times that didn’t actually time out.

For what it’s worth, I notice more occurrences on the longer threads, like the Bakers Dozen thread in Thread Games. I successfully open that thread 25-50% of the time on the first try.
I notice that too, but it’s possible it’s just confirmation bias on my part…
I haven’t seen a trend in mine. I was on earlier with my new-as-far-as-I’m-concerned macbook air and chrome and caught a time-out when I tried a reply to a one-page thread. So being the curious thing I am I logged in from my Mini and got the same time-out on the same thread from there. Don’t know that that tells us anything but there it is.

I thought so too, so I opened Bakers Dozen, Movie Marathon and Food Feast at the same time in separate tabs. Movie Marathon and Food Feast loaded immediately while Bakers Dozen clocked. Granted, I’ve tried this just a handful of times, and with various threads, but it’s held true.
I visited a couple threads, long and short, made a few replies – all perfect. Then I tried to come here and see how its been going for other and --------- 504’d twice before I got in. Call it a combination of :smack: and 
I don’t even wait for the error messages. I just quit my browser, relaunch it, and try again. Just a few minutes ago, I clicked on the GQ, and it just hung there. Quit my browser and came back to the forums. Nothing. Quit and tried again. Nothing. Did it six times. And finally I got to the forums
Instead of doing that, why not reload the page after 15-30 seconds? That usually works, eventually.
