Recent server timeout errors — anyone else getting them?

My experience is much worse than this. It pretty routinely fails if I try to edit or quote a post, and is dicey otherwise.

yeah its really bad this morning I’ve spent 20 minutes fighting the board for any post I’m using chrome and edge and it’s the same

I can usually edit with no problems. Will try editing this one to check how it’s doing at this particular moment.

ETA: testing, testing.

Yup, working fine (this will be the second edit.)

Yeah, I’m gittin’ 'em now, too.

502 Server Error

Error: Server Error

The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.
Please try again in 30 seconds.

I wonder if there is fear that if they admit they can’t afford to fix the problem there will be a lot of people who quit the site. Surely by now the cause and fix should be known.

TubaDiva strikes me as the sort of admin who would tell us what the cause is as soon as it is diagnosed. I don’t think she would hide that from the community because of cost concerns.

More likely, they haven’t pinpointed a cause or fix - aside from moving to new forum software.

Bad right now. Four time out errors.

Lots of slowness today, and finally … a time-out upon posting.

Part of the issue seems to be that these time-outs are much more an occasional annoyance than an existential threat to the board. The board still seems to be, for 99%+ of the user base 99% of the time, fully usable even when errors do occur. You press F5 and carry on.

That means that a fix for the currently-presenting issues really would never be front-burnered. If the board were straight up *down *-- where no one could log in, read posts, post messages, edit, etc. – then it would likely get more attention more immediately.

Way more complex website problems are fixed in a few days. It doesn’t take 2+ months to find this kind of problem. It’s not like building a moon rocket.

I doubt a professional with expertise in old web server software, with root access, has been actively working on the timeout errors for more than a few hours.

If they are good it probably would only take a few hours. There are many freeware tools to help debug server and database problems.

If they hire Bob from the TV repair shop down the street who is still running Windows 95 I agree it won’t be fixed in a few hours.

Only took 12 minutes to access the site tonight.

Well, uh, whatever time you think it should take, assume it hasn’t been that long yet.

I haven’t had any time out errors today or all week for that matter. Actually I very rarely get those. Which style are you all using? I never use anything but the original and wonder if the “new and improved” Sultantheme is the problem.

To me I see only 2 possibilities :

They found the problem but don’t have the money to fix it.

They are too cheap to hire an expert to find the problem and fix it.

I think the chances of the first one are about 80% , the 2nd one 20%

I suppose another possibility is they just don’t care about the problem as long as the users stay here and the ad money flows in.

The more I think about I think this is true:

The owners just don’t care about the problem as long as the users stay here and the ad money flows in. I don’t see any evidence to disprove that.

We haven’t heard anything from the owners, and without that, we can only speculate about their efforts and intentions from the meager clues we have. And speculation is what we’re doing. It’s like Kremlinology or reading tea leaves.

Well the only thing that matters is after 2 months we don’t have a fix. That’s not speculation, it’s a fact.

Getting the sixty second warning again. Also, what’s with the odd, “You have—something-something a post that is not part of the discussion. Please (words to the effect of removing it) and continue.” Something like that. This is afyer you hit the quote function.
