OK, odd request. I like to keep my hair very short, but not entirely bald. Sort of “high and tight”, but without the crew cut look. Basically, I’m losing my hair, and rather than having Ben Franklin hair, I shave. But not completely. All stubbly style.
Anyhow.
I’ve had a variety of trimmers, but 1) I like to take care of this particular issue in the shower, and 2) cordless, rechargeable trimmers suck.
So, do any of you guys just happen to know of any quality units like this?
You could do what I do. Been cutting my own hair for the past decade. I grabbed whatever regular, corded, electric trimmer was on the shelf at Wal-Mart (or somewhere like it), one with attachments for different lengths of cut. I think I’ve been using the 3/8" attachment for the last few years.
I take it into the shower, with the water off, of course. Do my haircut, scoop up the trimmings so they don’t clog the drain, put the trimmer away, and proceed to shower as usual.
Once in a while, I need to use a regular razor to neaten up the back, and some scissors around the ears. Going shorter, the way it sounds like you do, you can probably skip those steps most of the time.
Believe it or not, I actually tried that. I had to get an extension cord, which was inconvenient. And then the dang thing (Conair something-or-other, “most powerful motor on the market!”) didn’t work.
Shoot, I’m thinking about just getting a straight razor.
Just went upstairs to look, and sho’ 'nuf, it’s a Conair something-or-other. Been using it for ten years with no problems, and I haven’t even bothered to do any maintenance, like oiling it.
Just what kind of steel wool do you have growing on your head?
Mine’s not cordless, but most any Wahl clipper works well. I have a Designer model from their professional line. I use a #3 on the top and #2 on the sides and back. I cut in front of the sink, then jump in the shower. About every 10 days works for me.
I’ve been doing it for about 2 1/2 months and it’s paid for itself, not to mention the convenience factor.
Yeah, GaryM’s right. You can’t go wrong with a Wahl. Go to a beauty supply store, and they’ll have several varieties to show you. Wahl even had a 3-day stubble length rake called the Miami DeVice.
