We are having a pizza party for our office Christmas party, and I volunteered to bring some of the beverages. I got 7Up and caffeine-free Coke and Pepsi. I wanted to get caffeine-free Dr Pepper but they don’t carry it. Am I okay? Should I get some cherry or orange pop (they’re out of grape)?
I guess, but I’d sure appreciate “real” pop if I was there. Providing real and diet is the norm I think. To me, this would be like bringing ice milk to an ice cream party.
Or so I’ve been told at wineries. Champagne supposedly goes well with fatty, greasy foods and it’ll go with pepperoni and cheese for the same reason it goes with foie gras. The people telling me this were trying to get me to buy champagne, but it really does go well with pizza.
To me, it all depends on the pizza, so I can’t give a simple answer to that one.
American-style pizza (thick crust, lots of topping, lots of cheese): Beer. Coke or Pepsi if I’m driving.
Italian-style pizza (crispbread-thin crust, just one or two toppings): A simple Italian red, like Masi, Valpolicella or Chianti. Or beer. Carbonated mineral water if I’m driving.
I’ve never been a fan of beer and pizza. Fat savory foods like pizza call for sweet, sour and thin drinks to cleanse the pallet. I like the idea of champagne or red wine to go with pizza. White wine might work, if you like it. Otherwise, a soda of some kind is required.
