I honestly didn’t know what forum to post this in, so move this as you see fit moderators.
Back burner project #2 for me is the old- err REALLY old refrigerator with the leaky gasket that’s been discontinued.
If you’ve ever had this problem then you know that the gasket it is the only thing that keeps the hot air out and the cold air in and when this part fails to do it’s job, it makes your refrigerator slowly work itself to death trying to keep the same space cool like it did so easily before.
There’s not alot I can do for it. So I’ve turned to you guys.
I had thought something made of silicone, glue or caulk would be the way to go as far as holding everything together and remaining flexible to seal properly.
Any thoughts on this fellow posters?
You can buy gasket material by the foot.
This place is just one of many suppliers, and they have quite a few types available - Custom Gasket Repair Custom Refrigerator And Freezer Gasket
These might be more suitable for a home fridge - Misc. Refrigerator Door Gaskets | Dey Appliance Parts
I’ve actually gone to allot of retailers online and like your suggestion the company only deals with commercial refrigerator gaskets, not residential applications.
i do not have a url before me at the moment and no time to look for it. i have seen gasket by the foot sold by online vendors that handle appliance parts.
There s a thin plastic tape made for gasket repairs. You can fix cracks, and small holes with it. If a large chunk needs replacing you need some more of that type of gasket to fill in the gap. If the refrigerator is so old it doesn’t have a magnetic strip inside the gasket then it’s probably not worth saving. Otherwise you might have to replace that plastic strip.
Look for used appliance stores near you. They will usually do repairs as well, and have the repair material you might need to do it yourself.
