Reported shots fired at Chiefs Super Bowl rally [Feb 14, 2024]

I hadn’t seen that one, but yep. “Don’t do it, not here; this is stupid.” He said the person pulled out a gun and “started shooting and spinning in a circle,”

There’s always that one crazy one at a shootout.

I haven’t seen anything about charges. Multiple outlets were reporting they had to charge within 24 hours or let them go. Are the rules different for juveniles?

Charges will be filed in the morning for two juveniles.

That’s longer than 24 hours. I’m confused.

Maybe there’s a court order.

How Long Can You Be Kept at a Detention Center?
You can be detained up to 24 hours without a court order. You can be detained longer by court order. Your parents must be notified as soon as practicable.

The two juveniles have only been charged with resisting arrest and gun charges. Unfortunately this doesn’t answer all of the questions like how much proof they have that these are the shooters or if they are sure there were only two. Either they have all the evidence they need and are waiting to see if they can be charged as adults or they are still going through all the evidence. Or both. I more than understand not putting out too much so the investigation isn’t compromised. Still frustrating.

Charged as juveniles.

What does someone have to do in Missouri to get charges upgraded  as adult offenses?

That’s standard in many states for older teens involved in violent crimes.

Usually juveniles get released from custody when they turn 21.

Do you have a cite for this?

They haven’t been charged with violent crimes yet. They are charged with possession of a firearm by a juvenile and resisting arrest. If those are the only charges they will never be charged as an adult.

Are they 17 or 13? That enters into it as well.

It happened after a 1998 school shooting in Arkansas. Andrew Golden died in a head on car accident years after being released. It was big news locally.

IANAL but it’s my understanding this was common in most states. That’s why juveniles can be charged as adults and face stricter punishment.

It will be different state to state. Many will have lower limits on age as to when you can charge as an adult. Charging an 11 year old as an adult is going pretty far.

I get the impression the Kansas city shooters were older teens. We’ll probably never know since juvenile court records aren’t reported.

This entire case will be neatly covered up. Records eventually sealed.

Maybe the press can cover the trial without revealing the identity of the persons charged?

Take the lord’s name in vain?

Or Tread on someone.

Remember, this is still a breaking news thread. Political speculation and jabs are not appropriate.

Understood. I didn’t realize I made a political statement. Sealing juvenile records has been done for most of my life. I wasn’t questioning the practice.
My concern was charging these shooters as juveniles instead of as adults. But I understand we can’t question that here either.

I’ll open a new thread next time.

Just because they are charged as juveniles with minor crimes today doesn’t mean that will be the extent of the charges. I suspect what they are charged with now is just enough to keep them incarcerated while a case is built for more substantial charges.

Talk about bad luck. He is a convicted felon and supposedly picked up the gun to bring it to police. Now he’s in jail on a $25,000 bond.

Because putting your fingerprints on a gun is always a good idea.

I can see wanting to grab a handy weapon for self-defense if the threat’s still active.
