prince edward was next to trudeau. quale, gore, and pence sat next to each other. 7 out of 9 justices from the supreme court.
i did misname the carter kids. next to amy with the scarf was jeff.
going from amy, next was jeff, chip, then jack. it started with the oldest to youngest right to left, looking at them straight on. with spouses next to them. (per 5 chicago)
Edited to add, from CNN, “Michelle Obama had a scheduling conflict, her advisers told CNN’s Jeff Zeleny, and is presently still in Hawaii on an extended holiday vacation.”
The inside scuttlebutt is that she absolutely loathes Trump and protocol would have meant she would have been sitting next to him. So the “scheduling conflict” was a nice way of saying “fuck you”. Besides which, there’s that odor. . .
I assume this was treated like a State of the Union address and some member of the cabinet along with one or two members of the Supreme Court stay away, just in case?
It’s been quite awhile since all nine have been there for a SOTU, for instance, but more out of lack of interest/unwillingness to be a political prop than due to security concerns. In Tom Clancy’s Debt of Honor (1994), all nine justices are killed in an attack on the Capitol. The new President gets to appoint an all-new court. All of the justices he chooses are judges of the various U.S. Courts of Appeals; IIRC he doesn’t give any consideration to race, gender, ideology or geography.
I did not see the whole procession to the church. I did see the coffin being borne on the horse drawn caisson. As Carter was a military veteran was there a riderless horse anywhere? I remember JFK’s procession, seeing the horse and my mother explaining the symbolism.
I agree with all who’ve said that the whole thing was beautifully planned and carried out. Very moving.
Jason Carter, grandson of the President, has gotten praise for his humane and sometimes-humorous remembrances of his grandfather. At one point he described an early attempt by Jimmy to call him on a cell-phone and the crowd reacted:
Notice who either didn’t get the joke, or didn’t hear it because he was thinking about something else. (He appears to be glaring in Harris’ direction.)
