Resurrecting tv programmes

I did a quick search to see if this has been threaded before and didn’t find anything, but apologies if it has.

Reading through another thread in C.S. I was reminded of The West Wing and remembered what an incredibly good programme it was .

I think that it would be great if it was resurrected with new characters and situations but keeping the same fast moving, sharp, intelligent writng, and the same sort of style generally.

As I’ve just read that thread and posted this one I’ve no more ideas immediately, but will have soon.

What other progs do you think should get the same treatment ?

The West Wing has only been off the air for three years. Too early to be resurrected.

When Big Bang finishes its run, I’d like to revive Quantum Leap with Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons playing Sam & Al respectively.

When Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards weren’t having much luck with television series post-Seinfeld, one of the critics (Tom Shales, maybe) suggested a series following up on Seinfeld, except without Jerry (as I remember, he suggested calling it, "Where’s Jerry?). Now Seinfeld was great, but it’s amazing how dated it seems in some respects so I don’t know if that would work.

It would be great if someone dug up Star Trek and transposed it onto a whole new generation of characters in the same world.

Curb Your Enthusiasm comes off as a Rated-R Seinfeld.

I’d like to see Deep Space Nine resurrected somehow. Cassidy and her child are still waiting for The Sisko to return. Maybe just do a Star series that takes place after Nemesis and follows random stuff. A few episodes would cover the return of Sisko, the next few would cover Riker on the Titan, the next few would cover Admiral Janeway and Ambassador Picard, etc. Even an all new Star Trek would be nice, just something based in the prime universe.

Was not TWW itself a resurrection of Yes, (Prime) Minister? Despite the latter being a sitcom and TWW being a drama. YM as a sitcom was resurrected as The Thick of It

I didn’t know about The Thick of It, I’ll try and watch it if it shows up as repeats.
Another one that comes to mind is Blakes Seven, used to love it.

Oh yes. I didn’t like it after they lost the Liberator, though. Slave was not a good replacement and they sort of lost the plot after Blake left the show (until the finale) anyway.

A re-imagining of B7 a la BSG would be great.

I’d like to see how Veronica Mars is doing as an FBI agent these days, now that she’s graduated college.

Love to see* Pushing Daisies* come back. They had a lot more story arc.

Including the resolution+cliffhanger they left on, which is how the aunts reacted to the news of their niece.

I Dream of Jeannie … THIS time, we SEE her navel!

From the I Dream of Jeannie Wikipedia page:

The West Wing and Yes, Minister were both political in nature, and I liked them both, but I don’t see it being a resurrection.

I’ve heard of The Thick of It but never seen it. Any good?

Northern Exposure- I’d love to have Maurice, Holling, Shelley and Marilyn for continuity but the resurrected version would star new characters who’ve either moved to or grown up in Cicely in the 15 years (has it really been that long?) since the original. So much to add since last we saw them- the Internet, cell phones, satellite radio (KBRR would have a lot more competition), Iraq, Obama, and of course Palin- a lot of catching up to do.

There’s talk of a new Dallas series that will focus on the sons of J.R. and Bobby with occasional appearances by the original cast members. I can see how it would work, but it would need to be simultaneously marketed to fans of the old show and to people who have no nostalgia or are completely unfamiliar with the old show.

The Dinah Shore Show- guests are interviewed by edited clips of Dinah from the old days while an urn containing her remains sits on the coffee table. Or maybe not.

I don’t think they would ever recover the magic of the original. Though Maggie as someone now working for Palin would be vaguely interesting I guess. The show had run its course though.

As great as The Dick Van Dyke show or Barney Miller were, I am glad they went out on a high note. Few shows do.

I can’t actually remember much of the series myself, but it won a few awards. Wiki article here. Given my poor memory, I guess it didn’t resonate as deeply as Yes, Minister.

Apparently there was an American version, which should be avoided.

My Name is Earl needs an ending.

There need to be considerably more series of Black Books. A lot more. Also Blackadder, for that matter.

I’d quite like to see Parker Lewis Can’t Lose back in some form, too- either as a sort of “How are Parker, Mikey, Jerry, & Kube doing as adults?”, or a re-make of the show with the same premise and style but new actors. I doubt it could be done though, sadly…

Totally second BlackAdder.
