In the first place, I think it’s not necessarily true that they’re ‘more patient’ with old timers. Most often I’ve seen the sort of comment “You should know better”

Step 1 was to remove the post count/registration date from the profiles so we’d all not know who was new, etc, and hopefully then treat everyone equally, sing songs and so on.
Step 2 was for specifically for the mods to be more patient with the newbies.

But I already explained how step 1 leads to step 2. Benign ignorance. Like if I distrust all people from Miami, I’d be more tolerant of Miamians on this board if I couldn’t see a Location: field on the left. I wouldn’t be in intent more tolerant of them, I would just be in practice more tolerant of them. Not that I am arguing for that, but it’s the same with the other two fields.
Once again, he has proven, this time through his website, that he has no interest in intellectual honesty, engaging in debates, or attepting to understand a point other than “Mykeru you rock!” The statements he made on his website are the same shit he was saying here, and I’ve already laid out the truth about his historical revisionism and outright idiocy. I honestly don’t give enough of a shit about him to do it all again.
But I will repeat the same thing I said to him in one of my very first post addressed to him:
It’s as true now, even more so, as it was then. His actions on this board left me with one of two conclusions: either he is a complete idiot, or his only interest was to get in a flame war posters, insult the board, and get banned. Take your pick.

Ogre, perhaps this illustration will serve to point out my disgust with the reverend. My first interaction with him that I recall was in the “cost of running the SDMB” thread, wherein I initially took him to task for a perceived lack of courtesy. (Yeah, I know. Of such mundane things is life made.) He and I went back and forth about this for a bit. Eventually, in his “ban countdown” thread, I apologized to the reverend and said I was wrong. He graciously accepted that apology, and we moved forward.
On his site, in the “No MP3, no empathy” section, the reverend uses that interaction as an example of the type of merciless flaming and “slagging” he received here. No mention is made that I apologized for my part in that altercation, since that would alter the view of the SDMB that the reverend wants to project.
That’s intellectually dishonest. He’s picking and choosing which aspects of his interactions here to display to further his own ends.
His prerogative? Sure. But don’t claim that his account is “accurate” and “pretty much precisely what happened” when it isn’t.
One more time: People piled on him and slagged him for being abrasive. He fought back. Big fucking deal. Then, people jumped on him for having the effrontry to not take it sitting down. Then, he got a siege mentality and fired away indiscriminately. 'Tis a pity you can’t (won’t?) see that.
And then the innocent bystanders who got hit by this “indiscriminate firing away” got a little peeved and started shooting back…
This argument hardly exonerates the Rev; it merely spreads the blame a little thinner. He still has no grounds to claim that he was “more sinned against than sinning”.
What do you hope to achieve by this? Everyone’s heard it. “One more time” achieves what?
Do you want him back? Do you want to be seen to be supporting an unpopular cause? Are you just complaining about how the board is run? Are you pissed off becase not everyone agrees with you? What exactly?
I don’t presume to speak for the Rev. In the “Fucking Tool” debacle, I got rather pissed about the pile-on. I thought, and still do think, that it was unjustified. I never claimed that he was “more sinned against than sinning.” I said he was giving back as good or better than he got.
Then, he opens the “Countdown to Banning” thread.

Sure, if he wants to come back and the Admins will allow it, that would be fine by me.
Little character flaw of mine: I don’t much give a shit if a cause is popular or not. If I see a reason for something, I’ll do it.
No complaints about how the board is run. I was complaining about what I saw as an unjustified slagging in other threads. It looked to me like he was responding in kind to a bunch of shit, and some posters just couldn’t take it. Boo hoo.

What will end this? The mods won’t re-instate the Rev until he humbly and contritely asks for re-admission. That’s pretty unlikely. Do you want everyone that attacked the Rev to apologise? That’s even less likely. So when does this shit end?

Really, I don’t think any apologies are necessary, unless the slaggers and slaggees would like to exchange them. None of my business. I just stepped in to the “Fucking Tool” debacle because I thought a lot of the flames were uncalled for. Rather nosy of me, I know, but when someone who, IMO, is getting nailed for being abrasive rather than downright vile, I’ll usually lend a hand. Fighting oppression? I don’t think so. I just get seriously pissed when I see this shit. I’m not above joining a pile-on myself, but I do it for my own reasons. I disagreed with the reasons of the “Tool” slaggers. I’ve read most of it and it doesn’t really seem like he’s particularly angry. Rather, he’s use the incident as an excuse for a little creative hyperbole. While the thread has drifted from the OP somewhat I’d still like to say that I for one am sorry he was banned. In the GD threads he participated in he argued cogently and provided cites. In the pit threads he was picked on by regs who thought they’d found an easy target but who then scampered away with their tails between their legs when they found that the good Rev was both arguing rings around them and flaming the shit out of them in supremely eloquent style. All in all, we’ve lost a funny, biting and seemingly quite knowledgeable poster. Sucks
Here we are on page seven and I still, once again, don’t get it. Especially the “cites” and the “arguing circles around”, neither of which he, in fact, did. But, I’ve already given him more time and energy than he was ever worth, so I won’t even ask for an explanation.
FTR: my first comment in the Tool thread could easily have been just a drive-by and should have ended there. Lieu made a joke with smiley; I made a follow-up joke, similar to the one earlier in this thread but sans-smiley. I think we all know what happened next. All I’m saying is that Rev. should have known better than to flame just for the sake of flaming, assuming that he really didn’t want to be banned.
7 pages of people saying the same stuff they said said on the other relevant threads, so… ::shrugs:: what’s the difference. I think he covered all points on his own, and P.T. said my piece too, so I’m done.
