Reverend Mykeru banned. SDMB Pit vultures rejoice.

Must be my thin skin, I seem to recall being somewhat insulted at being called a part of the “Christian Coalition circle jerk”, which apparently included anyone RM didn’t agree with.

Since that was in the Robertson thread which came before the personal experience thread which was hijacked to the point where the tool thread was opened, I’d say you might not be correct there, Ogre.

RM is, of course, reading all this, and probably loving the fact that he stirred up such a shit storm!

Wait. Link me, please, as I have searched all five pages of the “Pat Robertson has prostate cancer…and I’m glad!” thread, and I don’t see any such statement.

I could be suffering from eye strain at this point.

Apparently your eyes are fine and my memory’s shot. If anybody knows what the hell I thought I was talking about, I’d appreciate it if they’d let me know.

I “remember” reading it, I can’t find it, I withdraw the point.

Yes…but even with our recent conversation, because there were more than a few points you made, I am a little unclear on the context. Can you explain a little more for me?

Ogre, I didn’t see anyone telling him to go away until he started in on how the board is run. Or was that in the Pat Robertson thread? At any rate, not everyone was telling him to go away. Munch appears to have genuinely been trying to help, and look what happened.

BTW: the circle-jerk think was in the Tool thread.

:smack: Thing! Thing! :smack:

I’m afraid he used that phrase later, in the “Fucking Tool” thread.

Whoops. Didn’t preview and Jeff beat me to it.

Well, it does increase the chance I’ll remember this time.

Count me in the camp of those who believe RM was treated excessively.

I seldom (never) post, but I’ve been reading this board for over a year. Please don’t welcome me, I’ll take that as patronizing.

It seems to me the analogy of the “newbie” showing up at a party of a bunch old friends and drinking and swearing like everyone else is an appropriate one.

Is it somewhere in the rules that you should “get to know people”, before plunging in with your viewpoint? Maybe it should be–since you get in deep do do if you don’t.

I think all this back and forth really detracts from “fighting ignorance”. It just reveals it.

I went to the guy’s website and sense he’s been around the “posting” world for a long time. I’m sure he took offense at folks telling him, “you’re new, let me tell you how it’s done”. I know I would–and I never really used Usenet like he did.

I think there’s folks here with a lot of pent up frustrations that they’re taking out on people they don’t know. It was clearly a pile on.

He wasn’t a troll. He wasn’t a sock puppet. He was accused of both.

It clearly got a bit nasty. In my opinion he was baited. If banning is the proper antidote, I’d like to see the baiter(s) banned as well. Do that a few times, and a lot of this crap will die down.

I’m not sure if I’m sad to see a fellow Rev go, or happy that I’m unique again.

The guy was new. To this board. Not exactly the best position in which to start telling moderators how to run things.

If Mykeru has been around the posting world, he should have know that the best way is to “get to know people,” or at least how the board operates.

I’ll tell you, if I was hosting a party, and a random guest who I’d never met before came up to me and started telling me how to do things, I’d be a little annoyed too.

Reverend Mykeru, you are such a fucking tool. Intemperate thread title. Fine.

Before even typing a word of that OP, I link to Personal experience in SDMB debates.

The OP of that thread (I won’t reproduce it here) was about using the tragedy of personal experience as a trump card in debates on the board, and referenced a thread about Robertson although didn’t argue the specifics – only the questionable application of certain posters’ statements that their opinions had more weight because of their personal experience with cancer.

The third post to that thread is Mykeru’s first there (where he links to his website, giving the lie, incidentally, to his claim that he never referenced his website on the SDMB until Jeff Olsen started questioning him about it).

Innocuous? No. Controversial? Yes. Wrong-headed? In my opinion, yes. Ban-worthy? Of course not. RM further opines:

Here we have iampunha weighing in:

And RM’s response:

So we have RM first accusing iampunha of being a Robertson supporter as well as amoral, and also establishing what will become a consistent pattern of arguing that Robertson is a bad guy whenever he is challenged on any point.

Suffice it to say (the links are there) that he goes on to take extreme measures in defense of the Robertson hijack. He also starts a godawful Godwin’s Law hijack that spans a few dozen posts.

Regarding “At no point before you started your pit thread was Reverend Mykeru insulting to any poster in the Pat Robertson thread”:

And at that point I made my contribution by starting Reverend Mykeru, you are such a fucking tool, referenced there by my post

Which characterization, by the way, I stand by fully.
So can we agree that you were wrong when you said he was never insulting before I started that thread? Thanks.

As a point of order, I’ve only had two run-ins with the administration in my SDMB career. The first occured when Tuba added spaces to my name (the length was causing table problems), the second when I asked her to change it to something smaller. Both instances were exceedingly pleasant.

I was never, even in those heady first days, threatened or warned by any mod. But, uh, thanks for the mention.

BTW, there’s one to many reds in there.

Geez, White Lightning, you’re such a tool…

Sorry, Munch. Rereading that, it doesn’t look like you were talking about official warnings at all. I gotta remember, read twice, post once!

I totally agree Ogre. Well said.

Nobody ever asked him to back off his opinion. He wasn’t initially attacked solely for his opinions. He wasn’t banned for his opinions.

I’d like to see some examples of SDMB moderators engaging in “ugly behaviour”, and I’d like you to demonstrate it was the first direct contact they had with Reverend Mykeru.

Hint: I tried to help the guy. Tried to tell him to read some more, especially in our other forums. I was polite about it. He chose to ignore it, he chose his roll as a shit-slinging Pit monkey.
