Reverend Mykeru banned. SDMB Pit vultures rejoice.

I would have liked to find out, and tried a few times and got half-decent and interested responses in return, that’s why. Having to get around a posse to have a discussion in a discussion forum is pretty freaking lame. Except this Pit isn’t really geared to that…I’ll figure it out someday, never mind.

If you truly had no idea and no intention of hosting a bashing party - then I apologize. I happened to be right there watching it unfold and it certainly looked like you did, and if I thought so, others might have too…I believe the ‘personal experience’ thread grew out of Pat Robertson’s and then there was yours.

Okay, Ogre, I’ll bite.

He gave an opinion on Scott Peterson’s strange behavior.
One post.

He talked about why people might not have been able to escape from the nightclub fire.
“Now, in regards to The Ace of Swords…oh wait, why bother commenting on another dumb-ass pitting instigated by someone who couldn’t handle AofS in the original thread?” Slagging the SDMB (while being acerbic and witty about the fire for several paragraphs, granted).

He appreciated the costs of running a board and asked for examples of how the Chicago Reader might be liable for opinions. This turned into a flamefest after kabbes wrote a couple lines that could have been interpreted as a flame.
Is this one a joke? He singlehandedly dragged a totally innocent thread into flamefest territory, and might possibly have prevented Ed Zotti from posting some really interesting information. Regarding kabbes’ comment, if you really believe that, well… you’re still not necessarily an idiot.

He defended another user against a mischaracterization of ripping MP3s that one owns (as opposed to the SDMB being used to assist in theft of music).
“It seems as though a lot of denizens of the SDMB, including some moderators, are still hooked on phonics.” He posted exclusively to slag the SDMB.

He discussed creationism and Intelligent Design with others.
Two posts. Frequently and loudly lauded by his supporters as evidence that the 98% of his posts that were in the Pit were not actually representative of his real posting style.

He gave some input on conspiracy theories about the JFK assassination.
One post.

He stated an unpopular opinion, in line with the now-banned BURNER, that maybePat Robertson got his just desserts, which, of course, convinced everyone that Mykeru was the new face of evil and must be punished accordingly.
One more post.
Five useful posts out of 129. Real big asset to the board, this guy.
And on preview, super_head is still arguing that Robertson caused a lot of pain and suffering. My aching head.

Hmmm…I personally think his opinion about Robertson was perfectly acceptable, and his return of insult for insult was completely understandable. Guess that means I’m completely disagreeing with your “5 out of 129” point. Thus this thread.

Wow.

The sophistry and justifications are just astounding.

Guess I’ll just wait for the next newbie to express an unpopular opinion, get slagged, reply with “fuck you,” get slagged more, develop a siege mentality, and finally get banned.

As I see it, Rev gave back what he got and some posters just couldn’t take it. Boo hoo.

It wasn’t that he gave back what he got. I can admire that he wouldn’t back down when the heat got turned on, but he developed it into a grudge, hijacking innocent threads with rails against the SDMB. He crossed the line from defense to disruption.

The Hamburglar has stolen all the vowels from this post!

Martyr routine? Because I maintain that wishing cancer onto someone is an assholish thing to do?

Yes, I see the irony in a faith healer getting cancer, and resorting to conventional medicine immediately.

No, I do not wish cancer upon said faith healer just because he’s a jackass.

Seeing the irony doesn’t mean one immediately has to resort to completely bypassing all decency. Wishing cancer upon someone is fucked up. Period.

Coldfire, it is 5:18 am where you are… go to bed already!

Hence my “siege mentality” comment.

Yeah, he could have handled it differently. I thought his “countdown to banning” thread was a very stupid move, but what led up to it was uncalled for from many of the SDMB regs.

Why do you think nobody should be able to disagree with you on this point? Why do you think it is utterly unjustifiable to view it as a little bit of bad karma coming home to roost? Why do you think someone should be banned because he might have a harsher outlook on justice than you do?

He obviously wasn’t banned because of how he felt about Robertson. I thought you’d picked that up by now, Ogre.

On the contrary. That’s what started the whole mess, and what, albeit indirectly, led to his banning.

What led up to it was his inability to keep the Robertson stuff within the appropriate threads. He developed a persecution complex and began taking it out in completely unrelated threads. See White Lightning’s post timestamped 7:35 PM above. Yeah, Dopers can be a bloodthirsty bunch, but they’re also willing to let stuff die extremely quickly. Mykeru didn’t.

It’s what caught the attention. His continued hostility and assholishness led to his banning. He chose his own path.

His assholishness in response to the scorn and vitriol heaped on him liberally by other Dopers? He reacted by lashing back, and somehow that made him the asshole?

All the evidence I see points to the conclusion that he was ambushed heavily and justifiably wrote this board off as being ridiculously hard on newbies with different viewpoints.

How much harder did you want him to try? Did you want him to recant his opinions?

Maybe he could have gone and contributed his “unpopular opinions” to other threads in GD like ClogBoy suggested numerous times? No one was exactly forcing him to post only in the pit threads devoted to him, were they? He certainly had plenty of time on his hands to post here.

He got banned because he outflamed the regs that feel they are the arbiters of all that is just and holy, they got embarrassed, flamed more, whined about it, still got their asses kicked, got PETULANT, and ran him out on a rail…

I wouldn’t even have read this thread but for me being mentioned on Page 2 for some reason as yet unknown…but now I have a query.

How do you feel, Ogre, about the departed poster’s tactic of lambasting members of the SDMB on his own website for things they said on the SDMB? Is that jerkish behaviour, or is it irrelevant?

Sure, the SDMB has no control over what people do on their own or other webspaces. But isn’t that sort of behaviour kinda…well, I’ll avoid getting into the flames by simply referring to it as…“undesireable”?
