Revisiting Pinned Posts {and how to unpin and how to search for Pinned Topics}

This might be a minor thing–but would mods consider looking at the pinned posts in their forums, and figuring out if any of them can be unpinned, or combined? There are several that seem outdated (Cafe Society’s “book recommendation” pin that nobody’s posted to for six years) or maybe duplicate (a lot of the MPSIMS ones could maybe be combined).

Sounds like a reasonable idea, but the rest of the staff needs to check in.

I just want to verify that you know you can uncheck the pins for yourself by just clicking the pin icon. :pushpin:

So this search shows all the Pinned threads in The Cafe. There seems to be 5, including 2 forum rules. That must be annoying to someone that doesn’t know how to unpin them. The Flash Fiction one & Book Recommendations should probably not be pinned stilled. I’ll probably review and unpin them.

Unpinned and tagged books-writing-myths

I’m investigating why the search is showing the same Forum Rules thread twice, it might indicate two pins on the thread somehow. I’ll eliminate one of them if I can.

So the search just acts weird for Pins. Not worth bumping that up to Site ID.

It looks like with my quick cleaning of Cafe Society only Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share and The BBQ Pit are cluttered now.

I updated the title to show what can be learned in this thread.

I had no idea that I could unpin them for myself. Thank you!

Be aware that once you unpin them they become regular threads and can be a chore to find should you want them.

I’m looking at you rule threads in ATMB…

If you have unpinned posts for yourself, you can always search for the category name (aka forum name) and “in:pinned” to find them again. For example, searching "#about-this-message-board in:pinned" (without the quotes) will find all of the pinned posts in ATMB, and searching for "#cafe-society in:pinned" will find all of the pinned CS posts.

If you aren’t sure exactly how Discourse names each category, just type the # symbol and start typing your best guess. Discourse will suggest auto-completes below the search box and you can just click on one of those. It’s very useful so that all you have to do is hit search then type “#m” and then click on Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share so you don’t have to type out "#miscellaneous-and-personal-stuff-i-must-share" yourself.

Note that all of the rules that used to be pinned in ATMB have been moved, so searching for pinned posts in ATMB won’t work. Click on “Terms of Service” way down at the bottom of any page to find the TOS and the current Rules.

Bookmark it. It’s in settings. :bookmark:

Continuing from @engineer_comp_geek’s fine explanation of how to type up a search from scratch, it’s often easier for our non-expert users who don’t search often to jump to the advanced search page and use the drop-downs.

In more detail …

Click the magnifying glass, then the sorta hamburger/slider icon at the right of the pop-up. That takes you to the dedicated advanced search page.

Click the “>Advanced filters” item to open all the choices.

Use e.g the category drop-down to pick the category you want. The “Only return topics/posts…” section has 4 checkboxes and an dropdown that says “any”. If you open that dropdown there are 10 more choices of properties you can select. One of which is “are pinned”.

etc.

If you use Discourse’s search feature multiple times per day pretty quickly you learn all the magic search commands. If you search once a month, good bet you’ll have more success on the advanced search page.

I unpinned two threads in Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share

The no real life meetings one opened with the Chicago Reader, so pretty dated.

The old MPSIMS rules have been superseded by the new rules in the * Terms of Service. So leaving it pinned was an oversite.

@Miller, There are 5 pinned threads in The BBQ Pit, can any of them be unpinned? I think 3 can be.

And this very old one:

This one is from 2009, and might be superseded by the Terms of Service.

For Moderators To Unpin a thread:

Open the thread, click the wrench :wrench:
Click Un-Pin Topic
Click Un-Pin Topic

Or let me know and I’ll do it.
