Rimworld: old west meets sci-fi

This evidently has to be used with something like Repair Work Type or your walls ‘n’ stuff won’t get repaired. I now have Repair set as priority 2 and the walls, beds, etc. I moved out of ruins are finally getting repaired.

I might get Clanfolk for my Surface tablet, which has trouble loading RimWorld much past vanilla.

I see I’ve not mentioned Map Reroll yet, this is invaluable for ensuring you don’t start a new colony too close to any open ancient dangers.

Here’s the mod that put me in a canyon:

An example of a canyon is in the lower left corner; the example in the lower right corner is a rift.

The old west-themed Westerado mod got me thinking about creating a scenario based on Firefly: unlicensed Companions.

Royal Tribute Collector arrived during a heatwave. I wonder if they’ll succumb to heatstroke before they can collect…

I found a PS4 Let’s Play:

While that review was a bit to sneering for me to watch the whole thing, all reports I’ve seen suggest the console version is quite a success. I will get it in the first inevitable sale.

Not sure about console versions but the PC version has apparently never gone below $27: RimWorld - History - IsThereAnyDeal

And normally PC games are a bit cheaper than console games. Rimworld seems to be one of those rare games that never drops in price much. But that’s ok, I suspect I would spend way too much time on it so it’s good they don’t throw a price I can’t refuse my way.

It’s currently on sale for 10% off!

Even at full price it’s easily one of the best price:enjoyment ratios in my steam library, and I’ve purchased both expansions.

If it’s the type of game you enjoy, it is absolutely one of the best games available to purchase.

That sounded unbelievable to begin with, as I rarely buy any game for £20+. But I bought it on PC years ago, presumably when the Sterling exchange rate hadn’t yet gone down the shitter, so maybe only spent £15 or so…

I bought it on the slight 10% sale, pretty hooked on it as I figured. It sorta needs a graphical overhaul, but the gameplay is really neat. Sort of reminds me of a deeper Age of Empires. My 4 colonists made it through their first winter but I wound up relying on the livestock to feed them by the end.

I took the plunge and bought it for my PS4, in a tipsy moment of weakness. All seems present and correct. The UI seems capable, but it’ll take some time to remember where everything is. The graphics seem clearer than I remember, but I think I must have been playing the beta version on PC previously.

The More Faction Interaction mod can help with food supplies. Among the events it adds is a request from non-hostile neighbors to borrow some growers to help with harvesting; in exchange, the settlement will send a few hundred units of random plant-based food back.

Does the game (base version or otherwise) have enough configurability for combat to play a minimal-to-zero role? I greatly prefer dealing with environmental hazards and building sustainable systems as compared to fighting off enemy raids, etc. (Oxygen Not Included is my point of comparison here, as well as Factorio with the aliens disabled).

The Storyteller – the AI that controls the game’s events – can be set for peaceful. You can also create custom scenarios which disable raids.

Cool, thanks. Might have to give it a try. Though I’ve gotten back into ONI again with their Spaced Out update.

A couple of weeks in, playing the Console Edition, and I have no regrets. The UI has been managed so well; it really doesn’t feel like a compromise as compared to mouse/keyboard. After years without a PC to play this on, it’s great to be back, and I’d highly recommend this version (assuming you have a dislike of/indifference to mods as I do, anyway).

I hope we get the console UI on the Steam version, because I’d love to play on my Steam Deck on a big TV.

I recently noticed this in Early Access:

Sounds sort of like a 3D RimWorld with the setting of Clanfolk.
