RIP [Rock Photographer] Jim Marshall

First Robert Culp, now Jim Marshall…jeez.

One of THE best rock photographers. Ever. :frowning:

NY Times Obit here.

He took some of the great, iconic photos of the Golden Age - Hendrix, Janis, The Beatles - and probably the best “rock” photo of all time: Johnny Cash flippin’ the bird - if that ain’t rock n’ roll, I don’t know what is…

Thanks for your eye, Jim…

We did a couple books of his photography (I work at a publishing company), and by all accounts he was a crazy-ass mofo (he told one editor to call his wife and tell her she was about to be a widow), mostly in a good way. Great photographer.

ETA: The editor he told that to wasn’t so quick to dismiss him, as he’d come to the office with a gun at least once.

I stared an RIP thread yesterday that sank into oblivion…I was wondering if anyone here knew who he was. There’s a short slideshow of his work from the SFGate article here.

I’ve merged it with this one. He was definitely one of the defining voices of rock and roll journalism and helped establish its image.

One of my favorites: The Who, San Francisco Civic, 1971
