Veteran film director Robert Altman has blamed Hollywood for “inspiring” the recent attacks on the US.

“Nobody would have thought to commit an atrocity like that unless they’d seen it in a movie,” said Altman, who also directed MASH and The Player.

The 76-year-old Oscar-nominated director said violent action films with big explosions - usually targeted at young men - amount to training films for such bold attacks.

"How dare we continue to show this kind of mass destruction in movies?

“I just believe we created this atmosphere and taught them how to do it,” he said.

What a moron. Robert, I don’t know what kind of damn movies you’ve been watching, but I have never seen one remotely like a “training film.” Screw you.

Problem: A small but highly visible percentage of traffic fatalities are caused by drunk drivers.

Solution: Hunt down and punish anyone who drinks anything and gets behind the wheel.
Problem: A small percentage of computer users encrypt their correspondence in order to perform criminal acts.

Solution: Restrict file encryption for everyone.
Problem: A small percentage of kids who play violent video games shoot up their schools.

Solution: Sue the makers of violent video games.
Problem: A small percentage of people who see films which depict mass destruction are inspired to commit acts of mass destruction.

Mr. Altman’s Solution: Ban mass destruction from films.
So, by this logic…

Problem: A small percentage of followers of a particular religion kill thousands of innocent people in violent acts.

Solution…?

Don’t forget that Dan Quayle started this by blaming the LA riots on “Murphy Brown,” and that when Bob Dole made his speech attacking “Natural Born Killers” for not pushing “family values” (while praising Arnold Schwarzenneger’s “True Lies”,)he was praised by fellow Republicans for having jump-started his campaign for President, and having delivered a speech that the Democrats could not answer. Tipper and Altman hardly have a monopoly on this. JDM

OK, I realize this isn’t GD, but I gotta roto-till this garden of weeds…

1. Dan Quayle did come down hard on Murphy Brown… for promoting the carefree approach of rich single women having trophy children without considering the need of these children to have a real home, not a string of nannies.

2. IANAChristian (or any other religious persuasion), but if I were, and I saw Natural Born Killers, I’d be seeing the Antichrist too! The “family values” in question are quite different between the typical Schwarzenegger flick and that mind-fuck.

3. If you want to discuss Comstockery, look no further then Joe Lieberman.

You are really stretching it to equate the idiocy of Altman with a legitimately perceived grievance at the ever-astounding ability of the entertainment industry to apply the nipple clamps to the battery one more time to get the corpse of the jaded American public to spasmodically reach for its wallets to see the latest freak show.

Have you read this page carefully? If you had, you would realize that the speaker never says, “Drunk driving causes a small fraction of accidents” he says that drunk drivers with a BAC of above .14 percent are implicated in the majority of alcohol related accidents. In addition, he notes that correlation is not necessarily causation, but still does not argue that repeat offenders do not cause a substantial percentage of accidents.

That page, and its associated pages, points out that only 10-15 percent of all trafic fatalities are alcohol caused, and that as many as half of those fatalities are single-car accidents. It also points out that the term “alcohol related” has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not drunk driving caused the accident. It is instead used to inflate the number of traffic deaths attributed to drinking and driving.

The term “alcohol-related” is much akin to the term “fucking assholes.”

There are two “fucking assholes” in this thread, but the thread was not caused or even significantly contributed to by the “fucking assholes.” Rather, the “fucking assholes” simply happened to be at the scene.
