This was the first night that I’ve felt good about Dilana. She is a fantastic performer with great presence and emotion.
Her voice is still irrevocably thrashed however, and no matter how well she may work a stage, I still can’t listen and enjoy her music. If the band accept that that is how her voice is, and the limitations that go along with it, then great for them I guess…but I think it would be a poor choice.
It is interesting that they are criticizing Lukas for the vocal-damaging-growls, yet let Dilana skate by with not a single criticism. My guess is that they are aware that Dilana is old enough that there is just no recovery for her voice, while Lukas is still young enough that, with the help of a solid vocal coach, he can repair/ovoid the vocal damage he’s done to himself over the years.
To my ear, Dilana’s growls are not damaging to her chords - there are ways to have that rock voice in an appropriately-trained way. She won’t be able to sing opera, but can howl with the best of them. A trick is listening to her sing quiet stuff - like the first lines of the Cyndi Lauper song - full, not horse, no after-effects of a damaged voice. Then she did a growl or two - and then when she spoke? No scratchiness.
Lukas is damaging his voice. Sing the way he does for an hour and he won’t be able to talk, let alone sustain a tour…
I agree about Lukas, which is a shame because he has a talent for making them music his own. I loved what he did with “Let’s spend the night together”
My wife’s theory of Zayra’s lasting power… She is comic relief.
Watching her sing I’m not an “Addit” was awful. The Space suit followed by the Logan’s run costume was too much. Her complete inability to understand what she’s autioning for makes her the obvious choice for the heave ho but let’s face it her awfulness is entertaining in a perverse way.
Interesting what a buffoon Phil turned out to be. Why the hell would anyone do an interview like that? He may be sequestored but the Band isn’t… what a high caliber doorknob!
Exactly, my singing teacher has an article on her wall about learning the proper way to screaming/belting/growling without damaging the voice. Here’s another example of how to properly do it. The way Dilana is doing it is proper. It may sound harsh, but she’s really opening up her throat. Lukas on the other hand isn’t at all and watching the reality ep that they had at the vocal clinic really showed his reticence in learning proper form. That’s gonna be a short shelf-life on that boy’s voice.

In reading the entries from the rockers on the rockstar website, Dilana spoke about really loving her lesson from the voice coach. Then in another entry she mentioned meeting with the coach again and being excited about it. It sounded like it might be a weekly perk.
I was so pissed at Zayara’s being kept on after 3 times in the bottom, and Phil’s being booted, but given the whole newspaper interview debacle, it now makes sense.
God damn you, Phil. I really enjoyed him, he’s cute and kinda funny in a stoner way. And now, because of his stupidity, we have to suffer through Zayara for another friggin’ week.
I missed the first couple of episodes of this show, so I went to the web site and watched some of the performances (You can see them al there at the Rockstar web site.
Zarya actually did a really good job in week 2 doing ‘You Really Got Me’ by the Kinks. But she still wound up in the bottom three.
Anyway, watching all the performances, they were mostly very good. Toby killed “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers. Based on that performance, I could definitely see him in front of this band. Likewise Magni doing “My Generation”.
minor aside: on the guitar sites I visit, folks are geeking out over the house band. They really are quite talented and Gibson scored a coup by sponsoring the show - while you see the occasional Fender out there, it is mostly Gibson guitar porn all the way and fanboys are drooling…
I think that next season should be contest to front the houseband. They’re better than Supernova, anyway.
