Rockstar: Supernova 12 Sept (unboxed spoilers)

Am I the first? Sorry if this is a redundant thread.

Lots of blowin’ sunshine up the singers butts last night - seems like a calculated attempt to get us viewers into thinking they all have an equal chance. Except of course for Magni, whose song was dissed by Tommy Lee. Again, IMHO, Magni is like Storm - great singer who is not right for the band - getting booted is probably a much better outcome for his careet than getting picked. Since I think he is great and wish him well, I kinda hope he gets booted.

I could not believe how they praised Dilana after her performances over the past few shows and the obvious suckitude of her song Supersoul. Listening to them compliment the heck out of her was the clear time to call bullshit, as far as I was concerned.

I still think that Toby and Lukas are the frontrunners - not because I like them, per se, but because I think they make the best fit for the band, in terms of performance and songwriting…

Your thoughts

They’re going to hire Dilana. I don’t know why that would be “bullshit.” It’s their band, their call. Her original isn’t any good but neither are any of Supernova’s. She has presence and chops and a stage persona. This band isn’t goiing anywhere anyway, so I agree it’s probably better for Magni not to get the gig. He’ll get a lot of exposure for his own band and sell a lot more records.

I understand they’re going to turn the Supernova tour into an American Idol kind of thing with the House Band and a bunch of the losers opening for them. That’s not very metal. The kind of people who like Storm and Ryan are not really hard rock fans. They’re going to end up selling tickets to a bunch of 13 year-old girls who will leave the show early.

Last night’s show was boring, I thought. I mean, I like Toby’s and Lukas’s originals okay, but do I have to hear them perform them three times in a week? Don’t they have any other originals they could have done this week? I also thought the covers were pretty lame this week. Maybe I was just in a bad mood, but nobody really impressed me.
I won’t get to see tonight’s show. It’s my husband’s birthday so we’re going out for dinner and then having drinks with friends. I have a feeling I won’t be missing much.

**Dio ** - of course I think Dilana is solidly in the running and if they picked her it would not be bullshit at all. The only thing I am calling bullshit on is the unabashedly positive feedback they gave her last night - they never even chided her for declaring Cheap Trick to be punk, and no comments on her song, even after Gilby stated earlier that he thought the lyrics were too literal (very true)…

It just seemed like the bands’ feedback last night was more just a set up to the finale vs. other nights where they seemed a little more honest…that’s what I was calling bullshit on. But it’s a reality show so I get what I pay for…

I agree. I actually forgot the show was on last night… Tivo reminded me. Dilana’s redemption arc is complete, with her bringing back Ryan and singing with “the boys.” But I have to admit her “Roxanne” was very, very good. She sang instead of growling and demonstrated that there’s a lovely voice in there. Don’t think SuperNoGo is doing much in the way of Police covers, though.

I still think the best fit would be Toby. Magni doesn’t sync up with the band at all. Just a solid professionial, and I admit he bored me a bit last night. I much preferred Lukas’ stripped down version of his song - could actually hear the lyrics this time. Toby was good but that song, as catchy as it is, is wearing on me. Liked how he involved Magni though.

It’s time to shoot this dog and look for a better crop (the band I mean) next season. My nominee?

Rock Star: Blind Melon!

Great musicians, I thought Shannon Hoon was a great singer (once the airplay for “No Rain” died down - that song was played to death). I think they did another band for a while…

Last night’s show was boring. Why no new originals? If I didn’t like to the original songs the first time (and I didn’t) then listening to them again was just going to be torture. I’m already tired of Toby’s song; I think that Lukas slowing his song down was an improvement but I still didn’t like it; Dilana’s song is just bad. Magni’s song was okay, but not really memorable–maybe it’s better in Icelandic.

I think this is going to a one-tour band; I just don’t see the existing ‘talent’ staying together longer than that. I saw Tommy Lee on the Ellen Degeneres Show (I was watching for Hugh Laurie) and from what I saw, he’s basically in this for the fun of doing the TV show and maybe touring around for a while. Given that, I still think Dilana is the best fit for the band, with Lukas a close second. I could actually watch Dilana perform for a couple of hours, I can’t watch Lukas sing even one song, but others really seem to like his style.

I just couldn’t get invested in the band this season. I enjoyed watching the performers, but I don’t really care about the band. Maybe next time.

A “Rockstar: Van Halen” could be interesting.

So Dilana pulled her calf muscle two weeks ago and she’s already jumping around on stage? I call bullshit.

It may be all for naught:

Anyone for an “America’s Vote”?

How about “Flash in the Pan”? :stuck_out_tongue:

Come to think of it, “All For Naught” isn’t too bad either!

What made them think they could possibly get away stealing another band’s name in the first place? It’s not even a very good name.

Appropriate, though; they’re not a very good band.

I think the judge may have done them a favor by forcing them to change their name. “Supernova” is a sucky name.

Who is the best fit for the band? It depends what they are going for. Is this just a gimmick that’s going to result in one album and a short tour? If so, then it doesn’t really matter. Is Supernova trying to become basically a touring, party band? One whose concerts you go to because it will be a good time, and not because you want to hear great music? If so, then pick Toby. Do they want to make a career out of making music in a solid, workmanlike way? Make good albums that develop a solid fan base, good musicianship, and a good reputation? Then pick Magni. Or are they trying to make a big splash while the iron’s hot, get some press, and have an outside shot at a real unique sound with some interesting writing? Pick Lukas.

If they want to be a train wreck that builds publicity through notoriety and tabloid gossip, then Dilana’s the one.

They already sent home the best songwriters (Ryan, Josh, and Storm), and the best performer (Storm, by a mile), because they didn’t ‘fit’ with the band. So the selection has nothing to do with the merits of the four that are left - they’re all good enough. It’s just about who Supernova wants to tour with, and who they see as meshing best with them. And none of us have a clue about that - it’s a personal decision. I could see any of the last four being picked.

BTW, did anyone else see Storm on Ellen? I DVR’d it. She was amazing. She’s a natural performer. Not just singing, but interviewing. Insane amounts of charisma. And she sang “We are the Champions” with the keyboard player from the house band backing her, and she got that crowd of old people holding their arms above their heads and swaying back and forth and singing with her. The segment ended with Ellen trying to cut to commercial over the screaming from the audience. Storm’s a born performer. She also said that the last week has been really hectic for her, as her phone is rining off the hook and there have been ‘a lot of lunch meetings’. I suspect she’s about to become a fairly hot commodity.

It’s all over now. I just want to say I’m sorry to see it end without someone asking Dilana to sing “Jim Dandy to the rescue! Go, Jim Dandy! Go, Jim Dandy!”

Who won? The UK is a week behind for some reason. I have to know.

Lukas won. Dilana was second. They asked Dilana to tour with them and sing with the house band. Gilby also offered to help write and produce an album for her and Dave Navarro offered to play on it. I think Dilana probably got the better deal than Lukas did because [band to be renamed later] is going to crash and burn within a year.

Storm got the same deal, other than Gilby producing. She’ll be touring with the house band, Dave Navarro is recording with her, etc. And a newspaper article today from Australia said that Toby will be recording with Mark Burnett Productions. I imagine Magni will get some kind of deal as well. And of course, so did Ryan.

I think part of the attraction of shows like this to people like Mark Burnett is that it gives them an opportunity to get a bunch of talented people under contract so that if they appear to ‘break out’ on the show and develop a following, the producers of the show get first crack at them. American Idol does the same thing.

Supernova is going to have a problem on their tour though - after the House Band plays with the likes of Toby, Magni, Storm, and Dilana, and The Panic Channel does a set, it’s going to be hard for Supernova to top them. I think they’re the weakest of those three acts, and not just by a little.

I must say that after seeing Lukas sing the ‘hey hey hey’ song, I liked it much better than Toby’s version. With Toby singing it, the song sounded like a frat party anthem - very lightweight, very 80’s. But Lukas put an angry edge and some cynicism behind it, which is exactly what that song needed. So in the end, I think Supernova picked the right guy.

Well, I have to say I’m shocked. First, that Toby was sent away before the Big Finale. Was it me, or was his dismissal incredibly abrupt?

After Toby was tossed I thought for sure Dilana got the gig. I didn’t think Lukas was even in the running! When he actually sings he’s quite decent. When he does the emo-angsty-throat stuff I want to throw a brick at the TV. Doing the SuperNoGo song at the end I thought he was channeling Scott Weiland.

I have no desire to see them live, and I have a distinct feeling that the other supporting acts will overshadow Supernova… so Lukas might have actually gotten the shaft by winning.

Really curious to see who the next Rock Star band will be… maybe the House Band?

Two things we’ve learned from this season:

  1. The winner might actually be the loser.
  2. The house band is better than the “super” band.

Someone should go to the website and submit SuperNoGo as a name for the band to replace the one in contention – really, it’s actually a better name.
