Rock Star: Supernova: BJORK, for the love of...

Am I the only person in the world who is wondering why Zayre is still on the show?

It completely baffles me when the band says things like, “Each week you keep changing it up”.

No, gentlemen, she does not. Each week she acts like Bjork. Every single fucking week. It hasn’t changed from day one. She acts like Bjork, she sounds like Bjork, she does weird shit and wears ugly fucking clothing, just like fucking Bjork. It’s not “unique”. It’s not “different”. It’s a fucking impression of Bjork.

If she were auditioning for a Bjork cover band, I would vote for her hands down. However, she is auditioning for a fucking ROCK BAND. When, I ask, has anyone EVER considered Bjork to be ROCK?

I want to punch someone really hard.

I think there has to be a small bit of “WTF will she do next?” that keeps her hanging in there. It’s worth a laugh, at least. And a few cringes.

Still, after tonight’s show, I would be happier if Lucas the Mutant Hobbit got the boot. I’d rather listen to an endless loop of flatulence blarfed through a barrel of baby guts than hear him sing again.

My money’s still on Dilana. She’s got talent, looks and a great attitude.

Why, obviously, they’re keeping Zayra in for extraordinary vocal talents and amazing rock star aura. “Sing? Was she singing? Oh yah. Let me just take a few minutes in the bathroom to process her, ummm, performance…” She’s entertaining sexual eye candy and Tommy Lee wants poke her. They know darn well she’ll never be in front of their band, so they’re going to [delete]look at her[/delete] listen to her gritty rock star self as long as there are others around that have absolutely no chance of being in front of their band either. Josh, Jill, Patrice, Dana, to name a few. I thought Josh did great tonight, but his style is just not their style - there’s no mesh there. Not only does someone have to have enough vocal talent and stage presence to front this band, they’re also going to have to work with, write with, play with, hang out with, fight with, party with these guys. If someone’s style or sense of humor or personality doesn’t fit, even if they are talented in their own right, it’s not going to happen. That’s actually the one thing I like best about this show. It’s not a talent contest in front of impartial judges. Musical taste is so subjective, it’s impossible to be completely impartial. These “judges” are basing their decisions and criticisms on a very real scale - one of their own making - and have a real stake and a real say in who they’re going to hang with. I think that’s one of the edges that Dilana has. Not only is she talented and geared towards their style, she’s also not a wide-eyed kid that they’re going to have to coddle and nurture along. Hell, she could probably teach them a few tricks. Whoever wins is going to have to be able to hold their own with some big boys with big toys and big egos and the Supernova guys know it. They’re not looking for a new star, they’re looking for a bandmate.

Isn’t that the latest Björk/Matthew Barney collaboration?

Well stated. One disagreement, though. I’m not convinced they’re looking for a bandmate. I don’t get a feeling that these guys are going to stick with Super No Go beyond the obligatory album and concert. Whereas I got the feeling from INXS they were looking for a long-term partner to be a part of the band. I don’t trust Tommy Lee for a second. They’ll offer a million bucks for another horrific Crue tour and he’ll disappear. But you’re right, for as long as it lasts, the singer is going to have to be a part of the fray.

I guess the heat affected my hearing because they all sounded fairly okay to me. No-one really stood out as horrible… even Zayra did a million times better this week. Dude on piano, who I can’t remember by name, did a freakin’ nice job. Aussie dude did well, as did the Icelandic dude.

And I have a serious question here. I’ve been told that I am teetering on the metrosexual side of things. I am not afraid of pointing out attractive people of the same sex. But is there something abut Lukas that I’m missing? Seriously, he is one of the ugliest individuals I’ve ever seen. I do think if he covered his forehead and stopped emphasizing his raccoon eyes he could look a lot better… but as is he’s a freakin’ freak that I gawk at. It seems a sizable segment of the population finds him attractive… could a fan please address his physical appearance? If he’s got an awesome personality, cool, but based on seeing him yell on stage for five minutes a week, I’m nonplussed.

Well, I’m definately not a fan, but I’ll chime in as a primarily hetero female, and agree with everything you’ve said about him. He’s also got an inflated ego and an enormous sense of entitlement that is more than somewhat off-putting. But the fivehead, the freakishly diagonal eyebrows and the strutting lilliputian stance all add up to a very repulsive human being that is only marginally talented as a singer, slighly more as a performer. And he stunk up the stage, bigtime!

Now, where did all the strings come from when Ryan was singing at the piano? They’re allowed to use backing tracks?

If Dilana doesn’t win this thing, I’ll be gobsmacked.

I’m in Dilana’s corner, too. She’s got it hands down.

Someone needs to tell Lucas that Wednesday Addams wants her forehead back.

After last night it’s pretty much a given. She knows how to perform without looking like she has premditated steps like some of teh others.(And now I bend down and shake an audience members hands… now I turn, pump fist repeat repeat then vamp)

She has a decent personality and great sound. No one is in her league. I liked Lukas until last night. That was a horrible performance and his voice just did not work. If he doesn’t step it up (Bring the rock, uh do it, uh whatever…) she is going to leave him in teh dust. For a short while he had an equal chance.

I really don’t like Lucas either and admit that I am a little ashamed that he is Canadian.

I have loved Dilana from the beginning and still think she is awesome.

No, you’re totally right. He’s ugly to the point that when he’s not performing well (like last night), his looks are so distracting that I can’t concentrate on the performance. To quote my husband, “He looks like a skunk wearing one of Michael Jackson’s jackets.” I also agree that if he tried to downplay the huge forehead and raccoon eyes he’s be much easier on the eyes.

I loved Dilana, as usual. If she doesn’t win this, I’m going to be really surprised. She just has what it takes and performs consistently well every single week. No one else can touch her.

Glad to see the Bean household is the norm. When Catwoman, I mean Zayra, was onstage I thought ‘This will be cool’ because I like it when people don’t limit themselves by gender when picking songs (my first thoughts about Lucas too, actually). When she got going my husband made an awful face and I started pointing at the TV saying “Bjork! Bjork! OMG - this is totally a Sugarcubes concert!” and when stinky Lucas came on my husband returned by pointing and saying “Skunk! Skunk! This is totally bad acid trip Cure!” But then blonde girl washed it away for him (I hated her but part of that was jealousy).

Lukas looks like a wombat on crack.

Dilana is more rock star eating a cheez doodle than any of the other 10 are on their best nights onstage.

That’s all.

At first I really liked Lucas and thought he was a strong contender. But as time has gone on, there’s nothing different about his performances from week to week, he clearly has a huge ego and no, there’s nothing attractive about him in my eyes (and I’m a het female, but older so maybe I’m just not in tune with what’s attractive to younger people…nah, ugly pretty much has no age limits.) His performance last night was very weak and if all he has is one gravely tone for his voice, how is he going to keep people entertained for an hour and a half concert? It’s the same with the poser girls - Patrice, Jilll, Dana, and to a lesser degree Storm - they’ve got some great vocals, but could you imagine watching them do the same thing every song, song after song, for an hour and a half? Same moves, same vocal tricks, same smiles - none of it particularly genuine. Storm has better stage presence, but she doesn’t seem to have much of a vocal range. They’re trying too hard to be “rock stars” and if it’s not a natural thing, it shows after time.

Well allow me to go against the grain here, I don’t think Dilana is going to win.

She has an awesome voice, and great stage presence. However she would be better suited to a Stevie Nicks cover band. Last night was the first time she sang anything “rocky”, and I wasn’t that impressed. All her other songs have been slow, dark, wicca type songs.

Now Ryan’s performance was stellar, again last night I said “let’s see an American Idol flunky try to sing a song and play a baby grand piano at the same time and sound like that!”.

I have always been a Lucas fan, I thought from the start this is exactly the fit they are looking for. Right attitude, decent stage performance, has the looks and does awesome arrangements. But last night he sounded like ass. But like Dave said he has a lot of credit built-up.

I thought Dave’s comment to Jill was priceless “if there was a time in this show to get up and grab a beer, or go to the bathroom… this was it”. El Slamo!!

MtM

I just have to add one more comment about the facial expressions. I’m thinking specifically of Dana and Patrice. Do you think they sat in the bathroom looking into the mirror and practiced their “gritty rock star” faces together or solo?

And I’m not discounting Australian Boy or Magni, either. I think they’ll both go far. They seem to really like Magni’s experience and commitment and range.

Storm’s incessant mugging drives me nuts. Every facial expression is so self-conscious, phony and calculated. It’s the same with her physical posturing. She’s the definition of a poseur. She practices everything in the morror, you can tell.

Dilana always seems unforced. She’s naturally cool. You can’t fake that. She’s totally going to win.

That guy who looks like David Blaine (Ryan?) did a pretty decent job with the REM song on the piano. It was listenable if slightly pretentious. I don’t think it’s really what they’re looking for, though.

Lukas is a dick. At first, I thought he might be a front runner but he’s lost me with his unwillingness to take direction (especially when people are just trying to help him preserve his own voice) and with his general “too-cool-for-the-room” demeanor. That couldn’t have been better exemplified than when he decided it was beneath him to sing the “ba-da-da-da” parts on “Let’s Spend the Night Together” because, dude, he’s so much cooler than Mick Jagger.

Has anyone else been driven bugshit crazy by the fact that EVERY SINGLE SONG–no matter what song it is–Dana stares at the camera and DOESN’T BLINK???

It doesn’t make her look badass at all. It makes her look like one of those creepy dolls I had as a kid that didn’t blink unless you made it lie down. She’s such a hack. Who wants to bet that her Daddy pays her rent?

Last night we were mocking Dana’s performance and **McDeath_the_Mad ** suggested that maybe if the band said she still wasn’t hard enough, she could pull out the “look I’ve got a tattoo!!!” card. So when she said she was getting one, we just about peed ourselves laughing.

I like Dana’s personality, I like her voice, I think she has talent. But she’s on the wrong show. I wonder if she has tried out for American Idol. The way she holds the mike, the way she stares at the camera, all of it … it’s just … not right for rock. I don’t know how else to explain it.

(I’m also glad they called Storm on her “crazy eyes” - ugh. I like her but that was bugging me).

It seemed that Lukas was trying to sing with a different vocal style, loosening up as Jason had been urging him to, for healthier vocalizing. I think that it pulled him so far out of his habitual confidence zone, that he lost focus and resorted to hiding himself by singing to the drummer.

I see it like a basketball player who has been using bad freethrow technique for years of their career, and suddenly gets someone to show them good shooting form, but goes through a long confidence struggle as they get used to the new technique.

Hopefully Lukas can both rediscover his stage presence, and change up his voice into something healthy and desirable.

Zeyra is being kept purely for entertainment value, at which she is certainly very entertaining. The band has no intention of ever having her lead the band though, and as long as there continue to be easier pickings below her (Lukas or Jill this week), then she will stick around.

one thing I’ll say for Lukas - he owned up completely that he gave a crappy performance and mumbled over a few lyrics. He didn’t try to hide behind an audience shout out or the like.
