I'm in love with Dilana and Magni of RockStar.

…And I’ll marry whichever one offers me a ring first.

Seriously, I’m a very heterosexual woman, but I would go through major elective surgery in order to father Dilana’s love child. I can’t help myself, she’s become my new gayfer. (You know, the one person in the world you’d go gayfer.)

Here are my predictions for the rest of the season.

  1. Next to go will be Storm Large, if we’re all lucky.

  2. Then Magni.

  3. Then Toby.

Final three will be Lukas, Ryan and Dilana.

Though if there is any justice in the world, it will be Magni, Ryan and Dilana. And Dilana will, of course, win the spot as lead singer of Supernova when all is said and done.

What do you think? Agree/disagree?

Furthermore, whose album will you be buying, regardless of when they’re eliminated?

I think Dilana is still far and away the frontrunner. I think she had been mailing it in the last couple of weeks but all the drama last week must have kicked her in the ass. She was just flat out better than everybody this week and she really owns a stage when she wants to.

I like Toby’s voice and I think Magni is solid but I probably wouldn’t buy their albums. I think Storm is an overrated poseur with limited talent. I think Ryan is trying too hard to be rock when that’s not really his genre. He’s actually pretty good singing moody songs behind a piano but he looks silly when he tries to be metal.

The only one I’d buy a CD from would probably be Dilana but I haven’t been very excited by the Supernova songs we’ve already heard. I think I might rather hear a CD of Dilana jamming with the house band.

Yeah, Dio, the house band is really rockin’.

I love Dilana. Tried to vote tonight but I can’t get into the site. I keep getting error messages. I don’t do this modern text messaging stuff. Feeling neanderthalian about it at the moment.

I don’t get the Dilana love. She just screams “rock cliche” to me. I found out she’s 34… she shows a lot more mileage than that. Apparently Storm is older (and 10x hotter, IMO). Though I’m not dumb enough to fall for Burnett’s manufactured drama, I think some of that was real. I hate the fact that when called out for acting like an ass - at best, being classless and careless in the interview last week - she apologized “if anyone was offended.” If you’re truly sorry it’s not conditional.

Her stupid little hissy fit made me see her as a petulant child. She could have laughed it off, made a self-effacing joke (when Storm gave her that great set-up at dinner with the toast), and buried this thing. But no, she had to go Drama Queen and sulk… and almost put out Magni’s eye! (Lukas’ freak out was awesome, I think I actually like him a little now.)

I think Dilana’s “rawk chick” persona is a tad contrived, especially since I went over to YouTube and took a gander at what kind of music she was playing before the show. She was more Natalie Imbruglia than Wendy O. Williams. (And if she wrote those lyrics, well, Supernova better pen their own… it’s twee.)

I do think she has a different persona than most of the women in these types of shows, which is unique and possibly interesting, but she committed a cardinal sin when she did “Every Breath You Take” - she sang it like a love song (it certainly isn’t) and she sang her name in it. Ew.

That having been said, I could give two shits about who wins, because I predict we’ll never hear from Supernova after CBS airs some of their concert on New Year’s Eve. Though Magni, Toby, and Storm seem to be pulling out all the stops and doing their damnedest to win.

“almost put out Magni’s eye!”

Hyperbole, much? It was hardly more than a scrape, Magni said so. And it was accidental. The fact that the show tonight played those scenes again, in case anyone missed the webisodes, shows that they want to milk every bit of drama they can find going on in the mansion. The show doesn’t quite have the ratings they were expecting.

As for Dilana being a petulant child, I guess the musicians you favour are all models of genteel behaviour?

If Dilana was tactless in her words on that fake press clinic, Lukas didn’t do much better in his underhanded “defense” of her “self-destructive” behaviour.

I would buy CDs by Supernova-- whether Dilana, Ryan or Magni wins. None of the others strike me as anything special. Lukas isn’t bad, and he has good stage presence, but his voice isn’t quite there, it always feels as though he’s straining, so I don’t think I’d want to hear him on a regular basis.

Storm is beautiful, has a great voice, but she tends to emote-- her attempts at showing emotion don’t feel real. She’s more fun to listen to than to watch as she sings (well, maybe the guys would disagree).

Toby leaves me cold. He sings well, puts on a great show. But I think I’d rather go have a beer with him than buy a CD.

Maybe if Storm and the Balls (her band) ever come up to Canada on tour, I’d go hear them. I like the samples I’ve heard.

Whoosh!

Magni made it quite clear it was nothing and he’s over it. I was referring to Lukas’ whingeing about “what if it hit him in the eye?”

I think the way it works is: “get the gig, then be an ass.” Hey, if you’re on a reality show, the way you come across is important. Go hide in the bathroom if you don’t want the cameras on you. Nothing wrong with being a bad ass. Initially, JD turned me off big time on RS: INXS but a) he really reflected on his dickishness and the viewers saw a change in him and b) hands down, he was a top songwriter and had the persona/pipes to fit the band.

This isn’t a case of people picking on Dilana, she brought this on herself. She’s on top, really has a pretty clear path to the finals. Ryan probably isn’t going to be the band’s choice, but he’s doing well, and she decides it’s a good idea to poke him by saying “the band carried you?” Insecure much? Why say anything at all? Why not just say “nice job dude” and leave it alone?

If you’re dependent on public perception regarding whether you get the gig or not, you might want to avoid looking like a freak… as much as possible (knowing that MBP is going to try their damnedest to make you look crazy anyway). If reality TV was a new concept I might let it go, if you were a rube from the cornfields and never dealt with media, I might let it go. But the artist who brought us “Do You Now” should know a little better.

As I said before, I really don’t care who wins, more power to whoever it is…

I took the trouble of tracking down some performances of these people before they showed up on Rockstar. Based on that, I’d have to say that they break down like this:

Songwriting, from best to worst

Ryan
Storm
Lukas
MAgni
Toby *
Dilana

*Toby - I haven’t heard any of his non-rockstar stuff, but his original song for Supernova was very good. Perhaps the best of the bunch.

Ryan and Storm do almost exclusively their own material, and have developed a large following because of it.

Magni has 6 albums of mostly original material, and he’s the biggest rock star in Iceland.

Dilana wrote the ‘thong and lotion’ monstrosity for Supernova, which was apparently ripped off her own bandmates from her last gig.
Rock Cred (they’re really rockers like they say they are)

Lukas
Storm
Ryan
Magni
Toby*
Dilana

If you’ve seen Storm and the Balls, she’s just way out there. Very cool. Ryan, Magni, and Tony are firmly in the rock genre. Dilana, on the other hand, was singing MOR pop before she got this gig. Although I have to say I heard her do a rendition of “She Talks to Angels” that was absolutely fantastic.

Stage Presence

Storm
Lukas
Ryan

I couldn’t find any video of the other three.

Anyway, Given all that, and given the fact that Magni and Ryan can both front the band instrumentally (important when you’ve got a band with three rhythm players…), I’d have to say that my favorite choices, from best to worst would be:

Magni
Ryan
Lukas
Toby
Storm
Dilana

One thing I noticed about Storm - this band gives her no respect. Maybe it’s because she exudes sex appeal or something, but they sure talk down to her. Calling her ‘honey’, always making sexual innuendos, and just not giving her the props she should get. Based on that alone, I think she’s a poor fit for Supernova, although I’d definitely buy her albums.

I disagree with a good part of your classification. In my opinion, Dilana is the strongest on all counts except one: she is not a songwriter, her song sucked. In that we agree.

How important will this be to the band? I guess they’d have to be able to recognize how dismal their own efforts at songwriting were. Their 2 original songs were terrible. They definitely need a good songwriter. In that case, Ryan would be the best choice.

Ever since I heard Supernova play, I’ve been wishing that the backup band on the show do a recording with whoever wins. They are wonderful.

I just wanted to add that the performances tonight rocked. Every one of them. Watching this show is like watching a great rock concert. I wish it were two hours long so we could get full versions of the songs, some jamming, and an encore. The house band is fantastic, and by now all the performers left are big talents, and they’re giving it their all with every performance. It’s just great to watch and listen to.

There must be something wrong with me because I think I’m the only person who has never liked Dilana at all. I thought she sounded awful last night - the lowkey parts were okay but when she yelled it sounded like a choked duck. I actually laughed because it sounded so funny. Needless to say, her behavior over the last couple of weeks isn’t doing anything to improve her status in my opinion.

I’ve always thought that Magni has sounded the best since the first episode. I don’t want him to win, though, because I wouldn’t want him to be saddled with that crap band. He’d be better out on his own with his regular band.

My $.02

  • Ryan is good at being Ryan. When he tries to be Supernova Frontman™ he stinks - awkward, geeky, etc. Good songwriter and singer - not meant for the band.

  • Storm - Sam Stone pretty much nails it. She has technical chops as a singer (you may not like her singing, but she can sing damn well) and apparently songwriting chops. She has great frontwoman moves - again, you may not like them, but she is clearly comfortable up there. But ultimately, the band doesn’t “get” her and don’t treat her with respect. I hope she gets good exposure from this, but not getting picked is the best thing that can happen for her.

  • Magni - too “real” to be the Supernova Frontman. He has angst in his delivery when called for, as noted by Newstead (I think), but Magni doesn’t cop a Rockstar Attitude. He doesn’t swagger - and for him, that is a great thing. It just isn’t right for this band of over-the-top refugees from other bands.

  • Toby - closer than the first three I mentioned, but a bit too young in his delivery. Not quite the right self-absorbed swagger - a bit too “puppy trying to please”

That leaves Lukas and Dilana - frankly, I think either would be great. They both have Frontman attitude, swagger and pipes. I think Lukas would be more likely to make it in a different setting - fronting his own band, say.

By the way, I completely agree with posters who have stated that the SN songs we’ve heard so far suck bigtime. “And a hey hey hey and a ho ho ho”?!?!? WTF?

Well, if there’s something wrong with you there’s something wrong with my husband too. He can’t stand her and hated her performance last night, while I really liked it. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I didn’t like Lukas’s arrangement of “Lithium,” though he did sing it well. Everyone was pretty solid really. I’m guessing Storm is gone tonight.

Last night’s performances were excellent. It was a great show and I regret mightily that I let myself auto delete the recording of it before mr.stretch could see it. He’s gonna kill me!

Storm is probably going to be next to go. Good for her in the long run; she’s much too talented to hang with Supernova. I can’t believe that Gilby preferred Jill’s performance to Storm’s—I hated that song until I heard Storm perform it. So much so that I can’t remember the song’s name!

Magni is too good for this band as well. I am loving his performances and hoping that we’ll be seeing more of him in the US, but not as part of this going nowhere band.

Ryan should either go solo or be fronting the Ryan Star Project. He can name his first solo album Dark Horse.

Toby is just…not right for this band. He is fun to watch but not compelling; I wouldn’t pay money to go see him. Of course, I doubt I’d go see Supernova unless they come up with better lyrics—I am a lyric person and all the good instrumentation in the world isn’t going to make me love you unless you got lyrics.

Lukas…I hate him more now and did not enjoy his “arrangement” of Lithium. His singing has improved over the course of the show, though I still think he is the least proficient singer; his stage performances still leave me cold and wishing the creepy guy would go away.

Dilana. Oh, Dilana, you are a woman after my own heart. Engaging mouth way before brain, forgetting that other people probably really don’t appreciate your opinions and “insights”—I can see myself in you. If I had your pipes, I would be following your dream too. Too bad you can’t write a song. And nobody else in Supernova can either, it appears. This does not bode well for you or the band.

I still think Dilana is the best fit for this band and thus I don’t think we should anticipate Supernova lasting beyond its first few moments of existence as a complete package. But the ride getting there is fun!

I agree that SN will definitely have to consider songwriting ability when selecting, because they have none of their own. Last week’s thread had someone insightfully point out that SN are all backup rythym players, able to hold a beat and punch out some chords, but aren’t doing anything even slightly interesting with melody or lyrics.

It is very telling that the house band can quickly whip up a killer backing for the contestants’ original songs that sounds far more professional and polished than SN’s finished works.

I think they should actually hire two of the contestants, having each trade off as an extra guitarist and backup vocalist to give SN some layered depth to their sound, instead of a one-riff garage band.

A Magni/Storm or Toby/Storm would make me a fan.

Yurk. What’s with all the Storm fans? Everything Storm does is a production of Broadway level, except with more “crazy eyes”.

And that stunned, hurt look she gets every single time anyone else is eliminated makes her look very, very punch-in-the-faceable.

Word. Everything she does is so self-conscious and affected that it’s distracting. All her facial expressions when she’s singing are phony and annoying. Now she’s “crazy.” now she’s “wistful.” It’s irritating. Broadway is exactly the word. She’s not rock, she’s playing a character who is “rock.” I guess a lot of people think that overwroughtfacial expressions are the same thing as singing ability (her singing itself is average to good but there are at least three people left who are better singers than she is).

While I disagree with your opinion of Dilana, I have to admit that “punch-in-the-faceable” is among the most brilliant descriptions I’ve read as of late.

You guys are nuts.

Here’s a news flash: They are performers. If they were all being judged on their singing voices along, Dana would have won. So they’re supposed to put on a show. And you’re dissing Storm because she’s too dramatic? She’s SUPPOSED to be. I’ll tell you, when she sang Bowie’s ‘Changes’, it was beautiful. The look of wistfulness on her face when she sang about time changing her was just perfect.

I was ambivalent about Storm until I saw some of her solo stuff on YouTube:

Storm Large - Great Day <– Awesome performance

Storm Large - Universal Remote Control

Storm Large - Ima Yora

Storm probably isn’t right for Supernova, but she’s the real deal. Probably the most ‘authentic’ rocker of the bunch. I think she’s fantastic, and if she gets a record deal I’ll be buying.

…And Ryan Star gets the boot.

I think he really shot himself in the foot today. He committed the one cardinal sin of a rock star on stage - he looked goofy. You can vomit on the crowd, you can drop your drawers and waggle Mr. Happy, hell you can even start a fight with the fans, and keep your rock cred. But climbing around the stage like a kid on a jungle gym just isn’t going to fly. Sorry.

The band is right - Ryan belongs behind a piano or in front of a microphone with a guitar. Trying to fly around the stage like Axl Rose on speed just doesn’t work for him - he’s too uncoordinated. Did you see him try to do the ‘swing the mike’ thing and get it tangled up in his legs and jacket? Yeesh.

And, he butchered the song (Baba O’Reilly). It was a really, really bad choice for him. Roger Daltry is a damned tough act to follow, and the only way Ryan could hit those notes was to scream them, and that just wasn’t appropriate for that song. It was easily his worst performance, and I think it got him booted.

Actually, I thought all the performances tonight sucked. Surprisingly, the best of the bunch was the Supernova song, which was better than the other two. But that’s not saying much, and I’ve already forgotten what it sounded like.

If it were me, I would have booted Dilana. Not only did her song suck, but her last couple of performances have been weak, and this whole Diva trip she’s on is painful to watch.

I’m rooting for Magni now. I just like the guy a lot, and I think he’s the most musically talented of those left. Alas, they’ll probably pick Dilana or Lukas. Toby’s also got a shot, and that’d be okay with me.
