Rock Star 9/5 [SPOILERS]

Finally I know who all of the singers are.

Whether Dilana is getting the loser edit or not, I am so sick of seeing her whingefest every fuckin’ week. Her self-absorbtion is bordering on the extreme now. You had a bad week a few weeks ago and every fuckin’ show starts with you going on about it. Every performance you feel compelled to revisit it… we would have forgotten it if you didn’t feel the urge to clamber up on the cross when the camera’s focused on you.

Don’t want to hear about your trials either. Suck it up and move on man! What, are you going to go on about how tough the tour’s been every night on the road?

Didn’t like her version of The Who’s song, but I think it’s because the song wasn’t all that to me. Once again, Dilana changes the lyrics and it grates. Original song was pants.

Storm was lovely, both in Suffragette City and with the original. Really well done!

Magni did a nice job with Back In the USSR and sang it straight, he’s really talented but for some reason he just didn’t get me hyped. I don’t remember his original, unfortunately.

Lukas… Living On A Prayer is so overdone and trite, it was actually somewhat interesting to hear a new take, even though he’s taking the emo thing to a ridiculous level. I want to send him a bottle of Robitussin and get that phlegm cleared out of his throat. Don’t recall his song either.

Toby… just won the competition. He seems like a good fit personality-wise and his pipes were first-rate. Not a fan of hearing The Killers again but he did a nice job with it. His original crushed it. Shouty, football-chanty tune that was instantly catchy. He could totally take this competition.

Lukas and Toby definitely proved themselves to be front-runners tonight.

I too am sick of Dilana’s whining - let it go already.

Magni just didn’t bring much energy tonight.

Storm was the best of the first three performers … but her performance was wiped out of my memory by Lukas.

I enjoyed his stripped-down version of Living on a Prayer … and his original song (something about nobody’s perfect) was good. I enjoyed seeing the emotional side of him, although it still seems like he’s having a hard time following Jason’s advice regarding his vocal technique.

Toby gave awesome performances, especially his original song, but I find his voice just isn’t powerful enough - it’s a little thin and a little high, which was most noticeable on the Killers song. His stage presence and the way he connects with the audience is great to watch!

No I don’t think Toby’s won anything yet.

I stick by my guns and say that Lukas is gonna win.

Dilana is too Stevie Nicks, or too dramatic.

Storm is always hamming it up to the camera.

Magni, is too much of a family man.

Toby would have been great last season.

Lukas is the only guy doing his thing.

I heard Ryan being interviewed on Rock101 and he also said that Lukas was gonna take it all. That’s the 3rd person to be eliminated say that (Dana and Patrice said it as well).

MtM

I’m not quite gettng the Lukas love from tonight’s orignal song. It’s supposed to be this great song, with a reputation already. But it was totally unmemorable for me. I didn’t hear a hook, couldn’t understand the lyrics, and just didn’t get it. Sorry, Lukas. I think he’s a cool guy and a good stage performer, but his vocals are starting to grate on me. I’m just not liking the strained, gravelly, speaking-with-marbles-in-my-mouth thing. Personal taste, I guess.

I thought Storm Large owned the night. Toby was great, but it wasn’t really anything I haven’t seen a zillion arena rockers do. He basically acts as an energy pump for the audience. That’s not a bad thing, and it might be exactly what Supernova needs. But Storm’s performance was of a higher caliber. It was emotional, theatrical, inspired, and man, she has amazing stage presence. And her duet with Navarro kicked ass.

Did anyone else burst out into spontaneous laughter when Dilana jumped up and started hopping around on one leg? And changing the line “No one knows what it’s like to be the sad man” to “be the sad girl” was a shark jumping moment for me. You just don’t take that song and turn it into a pity party for poor Dilana. Yuck. I thought that was horrible, and I thought her original song sucked. And what’s worse, that was no doubt the fixed-up, massaged version that she probably needed help with because her first attempt was amazingly bad. If you watch the reality webisode, she originally called her song “Metamorphosis (Lizard Skin)”, and it was all about the little people who watch the show and post messages about her. You know, the fans. As she said, “It’s basically a fuck-you to them.” Nice. And it had incredibly lame lines referencing laptop screens and her saying she wanted to control-alt-delete someone. It was a song so bad even Spinal Tap would have rejected it as being trite.

I love Magni. I think he’s a great guy, possibly the best musician of the bunch, a great singer, and apparently a pretty good songwriter. Problem is, he phones in some of his performances. He’s got the voice and the power, so he just struts around, waving to the audience to get pumped, and sings. Or at least, that’s what he did tonight. I remember thinking his original song was great, but ten minutes later I couldn’t remember what it sounded like. But man, did he kill Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” last week. That’s Magni in his element - with a guitar strapped on, hanging out back with the band and playing music. Not sure he’s a real showman like Supernova is apparently wanting.

Overall, I’d rate the performances, from best to worst: Storm, Toby, Lukas and Magni (tie), and Dilana as a distant last. She needs to go home now, and end the misery for everyone. And I’ll bet that’s exactly where she goes tomorrow night. The ensuing train wreck should be interesting to watch.

Anybody notic that Jason Newsted looked a litll F@%ked up. In the beginning while standing with the group he was overly hyper.

Then we didn’t hear from him for most of the program but when we did see him he was in his own little world. When he spoke it was just barely coherant.

Still rooting for Lukas… I like his stuff. Though I have to say I think Storm really out performed them all. She was one of the only ones who did well in both the cover and her original. Everyone else seemed to go through the motions on the cover.

If they’re basing this at all on songwriting ability, Dilana has got to go this week. I thought everyone else did an admirable job with their originals and could definitely hear most of them being hits. I found myself humming Storm’s and Lukas’s songs after the show, which is a good sign. Magni and Toby had good originals too. I don’t see how they could possibly keep Dilana over the other four this week.

Have to agree - Storm owned it. I would give Lukas an edge over Magni for both the innovative arrangement that made a BJ tune sound heartfelt and a good original (Headspin - pretty memorable to me).

Dilana - wow, what a dive from first to worst. Now she just seems like a headcase - but a lot of that I am sure is editing and reality show format - but still…

Overall, very impressive performances…

I gotta say that I wish Storm had performed her song as it was originally written - “What the Fuck is Ladylike”. Not sure where the pressure came from to change it - the show or the network, but it’s too bad.

(Of course I understand it’s network television, but they could’ve bleeped it, right?)

Does anyone else think that Storm might be hiding a secret? Like a penis-shaped secret? She looks and acts exactly like a drag queen.

The Dilana “bitch” edit is getting really old.

Diogenes, it’s so weird you said that. Today, for the very first time, I had “drag queen” thoughts about Storm.

She’s awesome.

There are plenty of nude photos of Storm online that would disagree with you on this… As she told Tommy early in the season, “Six letters… G-O-O-G-L-E.”

Storm’s hot. And unlike last year, I don’t see winning this thing as much of a prize… for the rockers I like, I’d like them to get exposure and a following, and get the hell away from the tuneless trainwreck that is Supernova. Happy that Storm got the opportunity sans the albatross of Lee, Clarke, and Newsted.

Sick to the back teeth of Dilana’s attempts to curry favor with the voters… after she insulted them. Remember “control-alt-delete?” The flowery crutches were too much, man. The coolest person with a disability I’ve ever seen rocking was Billy Idol after his bike accident. He was on stage with a cane and didn’t move. Very rock and roll. If Dilana just stood there and rocked it I would have given her props. I hated the hopping business with a passion. And how does one kick with a torn calf muscle?

I’m can’t believe that

Storm got booted. I don’t think Dilana deserves to remain.

I thought Dilana’s performance was the worst she has ever done. Her tempo was off and her voice sounded like crap. How on earth ANYONE could screw up a Cheap Trick song is beyond me.

It was pants, no doubt.

She further deserves a clip 'round the earhole for labeling I Want You To Want Me as a punk song. The fuck?

Again, Dilana was awful. She was totally off the beat, she sang in a gravelly monotone, and she seems to think that Cheap Trick was a punk band.

This is the same person who claims to have never heard “Won’t Get Fooled Again” or “Behind Blue Eyes”. And she’s supposed to be a rocker? Sorry, I’m not buying it. And we all know why she picked the Cheap Trick song - “I want you to want me, I want you to need me…” Once again, it’s all about Dilana.

Dilana hasn’t turned in a memorable performance for about a month now. I know she built up some cred with the boys, but that cheque should have been cashed about two shows ago. It’s sad that Storm had to leave to make room for Dilana in the final four. I would have sent Dilana packing in a heartbeat.

But here’s what I think that might be about - Storm wasn’t going to front this band - everyone knew that. She stayed as long as she did because A) she’s a great talent, B) she rocks hard, and C) she only recently made it into the bottom 3, so she’s always been safe. Dilana isn’t going to front this band either. The competition is really between Lukas, Magni, and Toby. So why send Storm home? Ratings. They want Dilana there to keep the drama going. She’s a polarizing figure, and that’s always good for ratings. Frankly, if Storm had stayed, then I would have been cool with just about any pick. I like all the final rockers other than Dilana, and could see any one of them being successful with Supernova (well, as successful as Supernova can possibly be…).

But with Dilana in the mix, the last night will be a nail biter. So it makes good sense to keep her around and let Storm get started on a solo career. In some ways, it’s even better for Storm to go out when she did, because she can hit the ground running while RSN is still making news and she can get some attention for her solo career. Next week, three of the four who didn’t make it will all be heading out on solo careers, and RSN will fade from memory quickly. So… second last week is not a bad time to exit at all.

+1 - you and I seem to be on the same wavelength Sam Stone - that’s exactly what I was thinking…

Thank God Storm was booted. She was incredibly phony.

I don’t get the Lukas love, either. He has that annoying put-on “Rock Star” accent. You know, the one where he tries to sound like the singer of Green Day and starts every word with “Woooghhhaa”. WTF is that?

Magni didn’t have any energy but he’s still the best singer on that stage. Dilana, as much as I love her and want to marry her, IS getting pretty tiring. I wish she’d go back to the way she was when she was cool.

Storm is the least phony person of the entire bunch. Have you seen footage of her live shows? If anything she was a lot more subdued on Rock Star Supernova than she is in ‘real life’. And she’s been doing essentially the same thing for something like 17 years in the music biz. She’s a pure original. And what I like best about her is that she’s just a really cool human being. She doesn’t have an ounce of pretension in her body, she’s an honestly nice person, marches to the beat of her own drummer. In her words, “I’m Storm Large, and I’m a freak.” BTW, in case you didn’t know, that’s her real name. She was born with it. Her parents were probably hippies, so she came by her freakishness honestly.

Compare that to Dilana, who apparently doesn’t listen to rock music, and who was making pop songs and videos just a couple of years ago, looking and sounding completely different than she does now. Even Lukas, who styles himself a punk and a bad boy, isn’t quite that. He does commercial music work, singing the theme songs to cartoons like ‘Rescue Heros’. That’s not a particularly punk think to do. Hard to imagine Sid Vicious doing that. And I like Lukas.

Supernova’s new song last night sucked a$$ … I haven’t really enjoyed any of their songs but that one was particularly bad.

In one of the shots of the 5 rockers, it really seemed like they were all praying NOT to win this thing, because SN sucks so bad.

And did I hear correctly, are they having some previous contestants on tour with them? Isn’t that very American Idol?

Wonder if the House Band has a real name.

It just seems like SN is getting really desperate to sell tickets - pulling in the House Band to open for them, along with Dave Navarro’s new group …

I enjoy the show but SN is baaaaaaaad (and not in a good way). Hmmm, maybe SN and Dilana deserve each other?!?

I’m thinking Toby has this one locked. He’s got energy, a following (now) and can entertain while on stage. My wife also says he’s pretty attractive.

It’s funny but I think Two of the Supernova guys have their own personal favorites. I think Lee seems to really Dig Lukas and Clarke seems to be a Toby fan. It may be editing… but just watch their reactions to the performances.
