Btw, have you guys seen the House Band do ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with Suzie from last year? It’s way cool. Not so much the lead singer (who’s okay, but nothing special), but the band arranged that song under 3 minutes, got all the important parts, hit all the timing perfectly, and nailed all the harmonies.
I was always rooting for Lukas.
I was surprised Toby was booted 2nd though. I thought he’d help the band get by a little while on the road with his style and energy. Personally I think the Supernova originals actually kinda… well suck.
Now that they have their front who also seems to have a small talent for writing and a style that might work for the younger crowd, they might produce something… that is if the old guys actually try to mesh with their contest winner (Hard to say…)
I think Dilana’s antics made the band think twice about being around her for an entire year… or less. Depends on when they get bored of it and split. She may have been a good fit too, so long as she didn’t write any music.
I agree all around - again, Sam Stone - I really noticed how Lukas’ take on the song was less sucky - the song still stinks, but his delivery was a clear highlight as to why he fits better than Toby.
I didn’t find Toby’s dismissal perfunctory - just surprising that they kept Dilana in to the end. The minute they cut Toby it was obviously going to be Lukas, simply because Dilana can’t write for shit.
It was a pretty good show - unfortunately, as we have all noted, we don’t have a lot of optimism about the band itself. I do think - regardless of whether I like him personally or not - that Lukas has a clear, assertive style and the ability to get inside a lyric - even a dumb one like Hey Hey Hey - that bodes well for him…
Yikes. I think Lukas was a terrible choice.
First of all, the guy can’t pronouce any words of the English language when he’s singing. I don’t know why this is; he speaks English perfectly well. The moment he starts singing, however, he gets all strangled and adopts this odd “accent” (I can only imagine it’s how he thinks a rock star ought to sound) and suddenly, nothing he sings can be understood. It’s a shame.
Furthermore, I’m bewildered by the fact that Tommy said at the end “We have to go with our fans, and Lukas, you got the most votes” when they had said earlier that the bottom 3 were Magni, Toby and… Lukas! How could Lukas have the most votes and be in the bottom three, when Dilana was not in the bottom 3?
The whole thing smells rotten. Not that it matters, though, since from what I’ve heard of SN’s songs, we won’t be missing much anyway.
My husband and I were talking about it, and we both thought Lucas would have been a better “Prince” kinda guy…The Main Attraction, as it were, rather than being part of a group that includes famous dudes. He’s definitely got the flash, but all those egos rattling around on stage…I just don’t see it happening for any length of time. They should have chosen someone who was looking to be part of a band rather than the guy whose sun rises and sets on himself. Just my opinion.
Carlyjay - remember: the 3 other than Dilana all ended up in the Bottom 2 at some point during the voting (per Brooke Burke) - which might mean that Lukas was in the Bottom 2 at some point, but the votes came later and he ended up at the top at the end. I have no idea - but based on what was said last night, that is a possible scenario.
As for his pronunciation - sure, I hear you. But listen to Axl Rose sing “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Doh-oh-ah” or Billie Joe Armstrong sing with his faux cockney or any number of other “liberties” singers take. I don’t love Lukas, but he comes across as legitimately rock n’ roll and a good fit with that band, so when I was trying to think objectively about it, I assumed he’d be the choice all along…
shudder
Dilana has a much better voice and rock star persona. As did Magni, as far as I was concerned.
Furthermore, Lukas looks like one of those pictures where you superimpose a baby’s head on the body of an adult. Not that this has anything to do with how he sings, but frankly, he isn’t a good singer, either.
I have to concur that Lukas did manage to polish the turd a little bit when performing that original. His songwriting shows some promise as well. Once he gets in the studio (especially if they’re willing to rework some arrangements and maybe let him contribute some hooks here and there), he might be able to help them make a sows ear into a purse. That might even have something to do with why they chose him.
I didn’t like Lukas at all, all along. Until his last performance of his original, when he sang it with just an acoustic instrument – and for the first time he actually sang, with understandable words and not nearly as many weird affectations with his voice. And my opinion of him did a 180 on the spot. Clearly, the kid has talent. I thought Toby would be a better tour performer, although he might have been too much competition with the girls; and Magni is just too competent for them.
Actually, I thought any of them would be a better fit with the band then Dilana; she’s far too much of a drama queen, wanting all the attention on herself, and you can’t have that in the upstart.
Kind of a blah ending to a blah season for me.
It wasn’t a blah season for me, because I watched it mainly just to hear some good music. And there was great music on this show, and great performances. Where else can you go on network TV and see an honest-to-God rock band blasting out Deep Purple or Jimi Hendrix?
Some favorite highlights:
- Dilana singing ‘Zombie’ the first time. Awesome.
- Magni singing and playing Hendrix’s ‘Fire’ with the house band. Man, that rocked.
- Magni singing “The Dolphin’s Cry” with his guitar.
- Magni singing “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots
- Ryan doing the acoustic piano version of ‘Losing My Religion’
- Storm singing ‘Suffragette City’ with Dave Navarro on guitar.
- Storm singing “Wish You Were Here”, and making herself and Jason Newstead cry.
- Storm singing “Anything Anything” in a manic frenzy.
- Storm singing Bowie’s “Changes”
- Storm’s original ‘Ladylike’
- Lukas singing “Creep”.
- Toby’s version of “Layla”
- Josh singing 'Santaria"
Those were all great rock performances. There were a bunch of others in there as well. Watched as nothing more than a music concert, it was very entertaining.
Not surprised to see Lukas win, a bit surprised that Toby went before Dilana and very glad that Storm escaped the cess-pit that is SubparNova.
This made me laugh, it’s been posted by one of the fans on Storm’s homepage forums…
Agreed. And furthermore, I would like to marry Magni’s version of that song. My ovaries ached just listening to it. Wonnndeerrrrfullll.
