Band hired for local 4th of July party embarrassed after playing Bruce Springsteen, ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ to a community of immigrants, forced to apologize.
If you have to ask, you’ll probably never understand.
Are the people complaining because they personally were hurt by the song or are they taking offense on a theoretical level?
But if really do need to have the blindingly obvious explained, it’s because it involved an audience that specifically might have been affected by it. Playing “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” is not offensive if some people in the audience might have recently broken up. It would be if you played it at a event for divorced people. Playing “All Shook Up” isn’t offensive just because there might be a few epileptics in the audience. But if you played it at a special benefit for epilepsy, it would be.
As I said, context is important.
I can’t go into the minds of these people, so I don’t know, but I would also give out a simple “whoops! sorry about that” in the situation. I don’t see why one wouldn’t.
I don’t disagree. I just think that collectively, as a country, our “I’m offended” meters need to be calibrated to be less sensitive.
We’ll just pass over that one, then.
Maybe. Frankly, most of the oversensitive yelping I hear seems to come from those offended that other people are daring to be offended about something, however mildly. One person raises a quizzical eyebrow at a tasteless remark, and that’s the trigger for the media and the entire internet to go on for days about “PC RUN MAD!!!”
The ironic thing is, Irma, now downgraded to a tropical storm, is headed into Georgia.
Lookin for a soul to steal.
“Rock you like a Tropical Depression” just doesn’t have the same ring…
Too soon!
A friend of mine who lives in Austin told me the local station was playing SRV’s “Texas Flood” the day of the hurricane.
List of songs not to be played by radio stations in the days following 9/11.
The real irony is that the song’s lyrics have nothing at all to do with hurricanes, or any kind of stormy weather. Like most Scorpions songs, it’s about sex.
So the people who really should be offended are those who practice celibacy, or those who suffer from erectile dysfunction. Hmm, maybe they are.
Most of the time, when people get offended over stupid bullshit, it’s their way of pretending to be doing something about a problem without actually doing anything about that problem. Like the current backlash against Confederate flags and statues, for example.
You make your case brilliantly and your example is exceedingly well-chosen.
Some people need to be offended every so often in order to make it through life.
This response deserves a :D.
Yep. Especially the people bitching/offended about the Braves apology.
Had they played in Miami, they would have played Riding the Storm Out by REO Speedwagon
