The best thing about SF beating Atlanta...

We don’t have to spend the next two weeks watching 50,000 vacuous fans waving their foam hatchets doing the “tomahawk chop.”

Criminy Dutch, Braves fans, give it up!
It was cute for 3 innings 12 years ago, but like the YMCA and the Wave, YOU CAN STOP, NOW!!!

Ah, yes, the tomahawk chop. I remember the first time I saw that: October 1987.

I think you mean '91. The Twins played St. Louis in '87. Maybe we’ll see a rematch?

:smack: :o

Oh my God. Last night was the first time I’d ever watched a game taking place in Atlanta, and I couldn’t stand to watch most of it. Holy fuck! That God-damned organ player WOULD NOT STOP PLAYING THE FUCKING “CHOP” SONG. EVER! As annoying as it is offensive, which is extremely, it made me want to stab my own eardrums with sharpened No. 2 pencils.

But then I changed the channel.

Anyway, woo hoo for SF!

I’m a big Braves fan and had the game on last night and those were my thoughts. “WhoaaaOhWhoaaOH…” I was thinking “geesh, how embarassing.” But then we used to have this native American indian guy that would run screaming from the dugout, face paint and all and do an “indian” dance on the pitcher’s mound at the start of the game and then race out to left field and sit in a teepee all game!!! What was that all about?

Of course for those of us living in Atlanta that aren’t big Braves fans, this starts the annual season of poring over what this team did wrong, who to blame, and then whining that this team isn’t getting the recognition it deserves.

At least with the Cubs, we can have a giddy March of hope, an April of reality, and then 4-5 months of glee over how the minor leaguers are doing and how they will make next march even more giddy.

How is it offensive? Annoying, that I will agree with, but the “tomahawk chop” was stolen from the Florida State Seminoles back when Deion Sanders (an FSU alum) was playing for the Braves. The chairman of the Seminole tribe, James Billie, does not find it offensive ( cite), why should you?

If you can remeber the Braves’ Chief Nokahoma on the other hand, now that was offensive, but the only people I see complaining about the tomahawk chop are hand-wringing ultra-liberal white guys and, in the words of James Billie, “Gucci-wearing-Indians” trying to force their “defeatism” on others.

Absolutely. Annoying.

I remember the first WS game in Atlanta in '91. The sound of an entire stadium doing that chant was kind of neat. By the 2nd game it was getting old. By the third game I was thinking “I can’t believe these idiots keep doing this.”

It’s 12 seasons later. Give it a rest!

So, what, because James Billie doesn’t find it offensive, I’m not allowed to? I wasn’t making a blanket statement, I was saying it’s annoying and offensive to me. Obviously, about a gajillion Braves fans, not to mention their over-zealous organ player, don’t find it the least offensive. Bully for them.

From your cite:

Granted, that’s over names like “Redskins,” but the point is that there are differences of opinion among Americans, both Native and non-.

I find it offensive because it’s another remnant of that “noble savage” crap that people have been throwing out for centuries, from the Pilgrims and their Indian friends observing a mythic Thanksgiving together right up to an old guy with a tear tricklin’ down over litter and the “tomahawk chop.” A bunch of really generic, stereotypical ideas about what Native American “tribesman” were back in the day, all condensed down into a colossally annoying, repetitive song performed by (I’m guessing) a combo of kids and drunken adults in the stands. But that’s just my opinion. Do that stupid thing all day long, if you choose to.

Believe me, I don’t do the damn thing and haven’t for years. It is the most hackneyed of chants to begin with an any interest I might have had in this postseason was killed by the near-strike and the fact that the Braves go to post season play every damn year, but never win the world series. They are the Buffalo Bills of Baseball. I just grow tired of the “I’m so offended” crap that pops up over the stupid chant and the implication that Native Americans are victimized by it. I live in Atlanta and hear this crap every post-season. The people that bring it up should at least save their ire for the Redskins and other truly offensive mascots.

Of course, you are allowed to find the chop offensive if you want to, your call. But just remember that the Seminoles don’t. Also, if you want to, you can find rasberry danishes offensive as the red inside reminds you of the blood the Danes spilt in the thirty years war. Your call, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t criticize your oversensitivity by pointing out that the Dutch view your crying over rasberries a bit ridiculous.

Ahem, getting back to the OP, the best thing about SF beating Atlanta is not the end of the chant, because that’ll be back next year (lamentably). The best thing about SF beating Atlanta is that the Braves fucking LOST!!!

And so did the Yankees! Woo-HA!

Simple, no?

Simple, YES!!!

Actually, the best thing about it is that the Cards will face a team they more easily handled all season.

GO CARDS!!!

That’s my thought as well. It was also nice that the final game of the series was in Atlanta and that the Braves while down by 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth worked up some momentum that was suddenly cut short by a double play that ended the game and the Braves’ season. YAY!!!

I’ve never liked the Braves…I can attribute this to my being around annoying, arrogant people who are Braves fans, the fact that Atlanta has been a dominating team for over a decade now, and my opinion that Bobby Cox is a cocky, wife beating shmuck.

I gotta say, I love this city and this team.

Case in point… Game 4, the Braves were here in SF. After the Giants would make some noise offensively, the Giants fans would start doing the chant, mocking the fucking BRaves. That was sweet.

Let’s go Giants!

Care to back that piece of quasi-libel up with a cite before I report it to the mods?

On second though, please back it up with a cite while I report it to the mods.

instead of reporting it to the moderators use google and do a search on bobby cox and domestic violence for punching his wife 1995 cox was charged with battery his wife, Pamela admitted that he hit her for years and he admitted he had a problem

Fair enough. But I still think it only fair that somebody using that kind of language (or someone coming to that person’s defense, for that matter) should have to back it up, not depend upon the reader to research it. That way, we can see what the claimant considers to be a reliable source of information.

How hard is it to provide a link, after all?

I would like to also point out the bit at the end of the relevant portion of the above-cited article:

The Giants were at 50% the last time they played the Cards, and Barry Bonds was on the DL. The regular season is over.

Go Giants!
