RockStar INXS - FINALE - 9/20/05

Based upon the Sunday show…

The clinic was a collaborative songwriting session with Andrew from INXS.

Marty: Andrew was impressed with Marty. Marty came prepared and wrote well.

MiG: Andrew seemed a bit less impressed with MiG, but didn’t say much either way.

JD: Andrew initially criticized JD for his lack of preparedness when JD showed up to the session with only a couple of lines. They ended up writing it together, and Andrew became impressed with JD’s abilities.

For the finale show, the final 3 rockers can pick any song from the songs performed during the entire series. It appears initially as though the rockers will sing the following tunes:

MiG: Bohemian Rhapsody
Marty: Wish You Were Here
JD: Can’t Always Get What You Want

Headed into the finale, both MiG & Marty privately discounted JD as a potential threat. Marty thinks it’s a mistake for MiG to sing BoRhap because it’s too safe of a choice for MiG.

Who I want to win: Marty

Who I think will win: Marty (but JD wouldn’t surprise me).

MiG has come off as too theater-showy and it’s turning INXS off, IMHO. Also, he has demonstrated that his writing is not “INXS style.”

Muchas gracias for the recap, Bearflag – I don’t have cable.

At this point, as I’ve said a bunch of times, I’ve got to be rooting for Marty. I think “Wish You Were Here” is absolutely the right choice for him – that was the first time I really “got” Marty.

Are they selecting tomorrow night, or is the actual finale Wednesday?

The show website says Tuesday.

You know, hubby & I have mixed emotions about Marty winning this. On one hand, it would be great to see him win this. On the other, if he doesn’t win, it would be amazing to have him release a solo album.

I think he’s going to win though.

Can’t wait for the finale tomorrow!

If you want to hear more Marty, check out this disc. He’s already got some music on the market - I’m pretty sure his band actually has a few discs because I remember a friend of mine having at least two a couple of years back.

Glad to see so many Dopers are passionately enthused about the FINALE with all the posts in this thread. :frowning:

I can’t comment on the “reality” show, because it’s not on until tonight here, and I’m trying to keep myself more or less out of the thread because I’m not going to be able to see the finale until after midnight Aussie time, due to work commitments… And I really don’t want this one being spoiled.

I personally think JD is more suited to INXS, but Marty is more professional. I think it’ll come down to whether or not the band feel like expending the energy necessary to knock the rough edges out of JD.

It will be close.

Honestly, I feel Marty is wrong for the band and should have an incredible solo career. I’m not sure I feel JD is suited for anything more than being lead singer of INXS – in fact, he has practically groomed himself for exactly that and probably won’t know what to do with himself if he isn’t selected.

I’m actually rooting for JD (something I couldn’t say a few weeks ago, but Marty won’t surprise me) but think they may pick Marty who will do well for them, but would do better on his own.

I’m still hoping someone picks up Suzie for a contract – I’d love to see her get a solo shot as well.

Early on, I thought Mig was the right choice, but in many ways he’s proven he’s only playing a role and one he can’t improvise at well.

In summation:

JD should win
Marty should get a solo contract and kick INXS on the charts
Mig should get another job in a touring company of Rent (or perhaps he can get a role on an American Soap Opera).

I am enthused about the finale, but most of my Rockstar:INXS posting happens on other boards that are dedicated specifically to the show.

I know a lot of people are saying things like “Jordis/Ty/Suzie/Marty/etc. are going to have great solo careers” and I really would like to believe that, but I actually have a hard time believing that they will. Why?

Well, maybe if Jordis either grows considerably as a songwriter or hooks up with a great songwriter, she’ll do well, but from what I’ve seen and heard from her, she comes across as a nice voice with little discipline and that’s about it. Hopefully she will continue to grow as an artist, but right now she’s not there.

Ty has LADS* and maybe he’d do well with a Living Colour tribute band, but the man’s bitter reaction to being cut didn’t endear him to many, from what I can tell. Plus, he thought that Stop/Go was brilliant. He ‘helped’ Deanna and Suzie to come up with underwhelming songs that went nowhere in terms of viewer reaction.

Suzie has a very good voice, and like Jordis might do well to hook up with a great songwriter who knows how to utilize that voice to full effect, but the woman thought that Stop/Go was brilliant. See “Ty” above.

Marty really should stick with the Lovehammers, but I just don’t see them going anywhere, except to have a slight boost from Marty’s publicity from the show. Marty has effectively wrecked some of his voice from screaming over the years and from everything that he ever wrote, his best was “Trees” apparently, which, I’m sorry, it’s kind of catchy, like JD’s “Pretty Vegas” but if you had just heard it on the radio without knowing the singer or their story, most people would just go “meh” over it. Another throwaway, generic pop song.

I think the singer I’ve been most impressed with has been Heather Luttrell, who was, in my opinion, let go far too early (thought it is rumored that she sandbagged it to get out of the competition) and I like what I’ve heard from her new album so far.

So I’m not overly excited about INXS’ future at this point. I keep thinking, if JD gets it, it will be a less radical shift in INXS’ sound, but then it’ll sound like Micheal Hutchence Lite. Marty will give INXS a new sound, but I’m not really a fan of Marty’s voice, songwriting, or crazy robot conductor dancing. MiG…oh god, please don’t let MiG win.

It’s too bad that someone with the vocal talents of, say Brandon Boyd of Incubus isn’t available for the gig. That would have been awesome.

Good points, Cuckoorex. I wonder if JD, Marty, or MiG has what it takes to really put INXS back on the map.

Also, the INXS message boards are a mess with crap like this:

“INXS, pleez read!!! If JD doesn’t win, I’m gonna burn all my INXS albums and never buy INXS again!!!11!!”

“Andrew sat on the same couch with JD, but Marty sat in the chair. Obvioulsy, JD is going to win!!11! JD is teh kewl and Marty is teh sukc!!11!1”

Sorry, Twickster. LADS is Lousy Artist Denial Syndrome. It’s a common ailment among creative types in which the sufferer is convinced that their artistic vision is pure genius and their technical execution is flawless, and if other people can’t see that then the problem is obviously with those people and not the artist. LADS sufferers take critiques as personal attacks and rarely grow beyond mediocrity.

I think it’s going to be JD. I will be utterly surprised if it’s Marty or MiG, even though I personally prefer Marty. MiG lost me with his poor songwriting, and JD lost me long before that with his personality. But I concede that “Pretty Vegas” was basically the best of the bunch, and that JD’s voice seems more appropriate for INXS.

Open Spoilers Below

I said OPEN spoilers … and the show hasn’t started yet.

Why’d they cut MiG? I just turned on the tv and caught the end of JD’s sound and I heard Brooke say that only two remained.

J.D.'s personality might be a little off-putting at times, but I can’t argue with his selection as new INXS lead singer. His voice is so Hutchence-like.

Well, JD it is.

I hope he can maintain the same level he has had the past few weeks. He had some real stinker performances before that.

Good luck to INXS. I’ll be watching, although I can’t say much for that song ‘Easy Easy’

I can’t help but notice J. D. kisses everyone.

Well, hell…
That was disappointing. I’m a huge MiG fan, but I was really surprised at how underwhelmed I was with his Bohemian Rhapsody. I think he’s flagged a bit in the past couple weeks, when he really needed to come through. I have to agree with the band - but I’ll never erase Lola from my DVR!
JD did sound good with the band - and I am pleased that they took my suggestion of having Marty and the Lovehammers open for them on tour - how did they hear me say that to my cubemates here in Seattle yesterday?!?

I liked Easy Easy - a lot!
