It’s good to see a lot of the SDMB members never liked (or watched) the old show nor the new show.
Add me to that list.
Even worse is that this time around, we have to contend with donald dump being admired and he even called the show to say how much he likes it???

All these years later and there are still people who don’t know why she did that?
You do know Roseanne is Jewish and the shoot was for a Jewish magazine, “Heeb”, that “has become known for its satire and sardonic approach to reaching Jewish readers of all streams.”
I thought this site was about fighting ignorance. I guess it is taking longer than we thought.
Yes, it is nice to see that people are thinking correctly and hating on conservative white people.
Good Gawd, people. You really don’t need to unleash the hounds every time you hear a Make America Great reference. I can’t stand Trump as much as the next Doper, but let’s keep some perspective. It is a sitcom. You know there was a lot of Hilary foolishness in there too, right?
That said, it was a letdown, funny-wise. Perhaps they should have let the show RIP.
mmm
It’s already been renewed for a second season.
I’m in a similar financial situation. It’s rather depressing hearing the supposed empathetic people judge people as losers based on their finances.
I haven’t seen an episode since the '90’s, and even then I wasn’t interested. But I did watch Smerconish this morning. Count me as Team Jackie.
I liked it. Best sitcom in years. The cast was updated a bit to draw in more than middle america. I laughed. Funny, just don’t take it too seriously.
Roseanne has decided to capitalize on her renewed success by promoting the Qanon conspiracy theory. This is the one that … oh, you know what? I’ll just let her explain it.

President Trump has freed so many children held in bondage to pimps all over this world. Hundreds each month. He has broken up trafficking rings in high places everywhere. notice that. I disagree on some things, but give him benefit of doubt-4 now.**
Yup. That’s our Donald. Fighting pimps and rescuing child sex slaves. If you’re wondering if this is related to the stupid Pizzagate theory that Hillary was running a child prostetution ring out of a pizza joint - well, kinda. Both conspiracy theories originated and are perpetuated on 4chan. (That’s why it’s the q-anon theory, see.)
It should go without saying that this all complete bullshit but that would rely on a shared appreciation for truth, justice, and the American Way. Here’s a few deconstructions of this stupidity.

Yup, isn’t nice to have Trump supporters represented on TV?

Merneith, this forum is about art, and hence this thread is about Roseanne’s artistic merits. If you want to gripe about her politics, take it elsewhere.
She did ruin the feels. I hope what I hear about Darlene being the center of the show is true.
Yes, I realize it was for Heeb, and that Heeb was a cutting-edge satirical magazine (now a newsletter). Furthermore, I didn’t just zip over to Wikipedia to get a description of the magazine; I read some of its pieces. I also know Heeb pulled the photo after an onslaught of complaints and criticism. According to The Jewish Journal, Barr herself came up with the concept, saying she thinks she was Hitler in a former life. Maybe Barr simply fell victim to the photo equivalent of the imitative fallacy: as the Jewish Journal explained, “…anti-Semites won’t get the joke and will continue to endorse Hitler’s agenda.” Regardless, judging by the reaction, the photos were not an unqualified success.
I’m not sure what my reaction to the photo shoot has to do with “hating on conservative white people,” but since you included it in your criticism of my reaction to the photo shoot, I’m going to take a leap here and say that your defense of Barr’s Hitler photos comes not from a genuine desire to defend cutting-edge satire but because you equate Barr with white conservatives and so view any criticism of her whatsoever as an attack on “conservative white people.”
This site really * is* about fighting ignorance. I hope you’ll stick around.
Wow, some people here are really angry at these fictional characters!
Anyhow, I was apprehensive after seeing some mixed reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. They didn’t much mess with the formula of the bickering family who really love each other when the chip are down, and the formula still works.
The overtly political material was probably the weakest, comedy-wise, but I didn’t find it too tedious or over-the-top. I in fact know some people in real life who voted for Trump and are actually good people that I like and even love. The concept is not that outlandish. What I found interesting was that while Roseanne (the character) said she voted for Trump, and said why, she did not go on to say that she currently supports him or that she’s happy with how things are going. My guess is that if they delve back into the subject, it will be somewhat more nuanced, but that they might not go there again. There’s no need; it was character-establishing material that did its job already. It doesn’t appear that the show will be in any way about politics.
If anybody decides they don’t want to like Roseanne the character because of whom she voted for, or that they hate the show because of whom Roseanne the real person voted for, that’s their choice, but I consider that a bit myopic.
With all due respect, the OP included this:
So, perhaps we’re in the wrong forum, but this thread is certainly about Roseanne’s politics.
It did bug me how none of the characters seemed to have undergone any personal growth in the last 20 years. Becky and Darlene still fight the exact same way they did as children. Roseanne, Dan and Jackie act the exact same way they did 20 years ago. Nobody really grew up any. DJ may have, but he hasn’t had enough airtime to really show it.
Most people I know change quite a bit between age 20 and 40, and also between age 45 and 65. But the characters on the show didn’t change. Maybe they’ll get into that in later episodes, I don’t know.
The original Roseanne was big at the time my future (and now present) wife were in school here in Hawaii, and she loved it. But she and I both being fervent anti-Chumpers, we have zero interest in a main character who is a Chump fan or an “actress” portraying her who is also a Chump fan. No thanks. Shameful that Barr’s a Hawaii resident. (This is a solidly blue state.)
So clever and original with the nicknames! You guys realize this makes you look like third-graders during recess, right?
Anyway, back on topic. The (enhanced) live audience laughter was ridiculous. I don’t need to be ‘told’ that something is funny; in fact, I resent it.
I didn’t notice bad acting, with one glaring exception: Lecy Goranson’s Becky. She really needs to get off the show. Actually, she needs to get out of the business.
The Roseanne/Trump Jackie/Hilary feud needs to go away as well. I get they’re trying to be topical, but they are not doing it very well. It’s also already old news.
mmm
Did anyone else find it odd that Roseanne’s become such a big fan of corporal punishment? :dubious: I don’t remember her actually hitting her kids (she much more creative than that) except for that one time she spanked DJ and then felt terrible because it brought up a bunch of memories from her abusive childhood. On one hand she did cross a line with Harris, on the other had Harris is an obnoxious brat and if I came close to talking to my mother or grandmother like that I’d have been slapped across the face. I don’t feely any sympathy for Harris.
Well Harris is only 15. I guess it’s official; any inconsistencies between this and original show to Roseanne Connor being an unreliable narrator in her book. So I guess I answered my own question. :smack:
Given that Roseanne (both the character and the person) is an extreme conservative, the corporal punishment/abuse scene didn’t surprise me at all. Think about the type of people who share those horrible “my parents spanked me and I turned out just fine!” memes.
I had actually been somewhat optimistic after the first episodes that this show would be a bit like “All In the Family” – older conservative folks being confronted by today’s issues in their own home, with the characters (or at least the audience) learning something by the end of the episode. Last night’s episode demonstrated a turn towards “ugh, kids these days.”
John Goodman is fun to watch, and needs his own show.
Rosenne Barr is not an “extreme conservative”, nor is the character.
