ROTK question (spoilers possible)

Who was the pinkish puffy orc? I read it was supposed to be gothmog, but I thought gothmog was a balrog of the first age.

I thought it was Gorbag, but Gorbag was one of the Orcs what caught Frodo, no?

The only thing that makes sense is for him to be Gothmog, liutenant of Morgul. He is only mentioned once in the book and is apparently second in command after the witch king.

I have a couple questions myself, and at the risk of starting a bunch of individual threads, I’ll just use this one.

One thing I couldn’t figure out was at the end. Why did Frodo have to leave Middle Earth?

Also, why was Theoden worried that there wouldn’t be enough men, when they seemed to have the upper hand? (The orcs were actually retreating.)

Did he just doubt the morale and training of his men?

The ring destroyed Frodo both physically and mentally, he had to leave middle earth in order to be healed of all the damage carrying the ring did to him, same as Bilbo (and eventually Sam, although for him i believe it was more about being reunited with Frodo than healing).

I too felt that Theoden’s army looked at least evenly matched with the orcs, maybe even that the advantage should be in his favor. But in reality that was not the case, if i remember correctly there is a passage in the book that says that at first they where outnumbered 3 to 1, and the situation got alot worse once the Haradrim with their Mumakil joined the fray.

Ah actually there are two gothmogs one is a balrog

Gothmog of the first age

and the one the liutenant of morgul

Another slight hi-jack.

My girlfirend asked me this, and I had no answer. At the battle of the Black Gate, Aragorn and the bunch were mounted on horses.

When the sh!t went down, they were on foot. What happened to the horses?

Probably just a decision change - people on horses being charged (as opposed to charging) looks odd.
