So I was in WHole Paycheck yesterday, and spotted a bar of the new ruby chocolate. I read Sora News and have for quite a number of years and I am heartily jealous of all the neat foods that Japan gets, and pink kitkats of ruby chocolate looked so interesting so I ended up buying a bar of the stuff.
A bit on the expensive side, but a pretty mauve color. Tastewise disappointing, pretty much tastes like white chocolate - none of the rounded fruity berry like notes it was supposed to have.
Interesting experience, but as I am not particularly enamored of the taste I won’t be getting it again unless it is gifted to me by someone else.
My wife got me a Ruby Chocolate bar. I have to disagree with you – maybe you got a Bad Bar or something, but it definitely did not taste like White Chocolate. There was another flavor there which I would be hard-pressed to describe, but “fruity” probably fits best.
Yeah, my brother had me taste a piece he acquired a couple of months ago. Definitely not just “white chocolate” to its flavor: there’s a fruity tartness to it. White chocolate is mostly about mouthfeel and sugar, with a touch of creaminess/milkiness, but not much flavor otherwise. Ruby chocolate had either a fruitiness or a tang to it. There was a certain sour acidity to give it an extra layer of flavor vs. white chocolate.
That said, from my one taste of it, it’s not something I would necessarily go out of my way to find. It was just okay.
I’m waiting on the Ruby KitKats I ordered from Amazon to arrive from London, probably in a week or so. Amazon has a very small selection of ruby chocolate items, but prices seemed reasonable.
The Ruby KitKats arrived, and we tried some. Sweeter than I was expecting, not very chocolaty, but there was a distinct berry-like note to it.
The surprising thing was that it has a super-low melting point. It had obviously melted in transit, and even though I’d been storing them in the fridge they quickly got melty just from body heat being held. We all ended up at “don’t dislike it, but also don’t strongly like it”.
