There are two valid answers to this.
1.) Not quite. Four more days, and it celebrates its thirteenth birthday. Sunday starts its fourteenth year.
2.) Although, yes, this is the fourteenth calendar year in which the thread has appeared.

Saw this just in time. It’s supposed to be *after *Thanksgiving, CBS!
I’m not going to make any ‘witty’ observation about some strange aspect of the show right now, because I’ve probably made it before.
Darn tootin’! Were I king (Moonracer or any other sort), I would decree that no Christmas music may be broadcast, decorations hung, goods sold or TV specials aired until Dec. 1 at the earliest.
Well, when you consider that Rankin/Bass made the first adaptation of The Hobbit (and one of Return of the King)…
It looks like it will be broadcast on December 19th on ABC Family (you know, the channel that still shows The 700 Club.
Contractual obligation. ABC Family was originally CBN (Cornerstone Broadcasting Network), Pat Robertson’s media empire. When they sold to Fox, there were two contractual requirements…the name of the new station had to have Family in it and they had to continue to air the 700 Club. When Fox sold (now) Fox Family to ABC/Disney, the same requirements were attached to the contract. So the station is ABC Family and they air the 700 Club. It’s weird and I’m no lawyer so I can’t explain in any detail.
I’m going to go with yes for this. I understand kaylasdad99’s quibble, but this thread follows the broadcast year, not the solar year, so it can move around a bit, like Hanukah or Tet.
Amazingly, this thread is almost as old as the SDMB itself, and much older than the forum it’s currently in. In all that time, we still haven’t plumbed the depths of the vast mystery that is the Rudolph holiday special. In fact, from my perspective, we’ve thrown a hell of a lot more darkness than light onto it.
What, no Betamax?
Indeed, we need someone who’d been here but went away: someone with a name synonymous with shining a light so bright as to guide our way tonight.
You could even say Diogenes The Cynic would go down in history.
Are they going to show it in glorious 4:3 HD? Or are they going to butcher the shit out of it? If they’re going to zoom and cut to placate the oldies (but I paaaaaid for a big screen tv!!!) I might have to only rely on my fond memories.
Don’t know. But it’s not just the “oldies”, by which I assume you mean old people (like me), who want the image to fill their screen even if it means cropping or, just as bad, stretching horizontally. It’s stupid people of all ages.
And now, a word from our sponsor.
I looked at the thread and there were references to them but there seem to be no link to the General Electric ads that ran during the original broadcast of Rudolph:
Some of the ads had the elves and Santa selling GE products starting at 1:30
For history buffs, interesting to see a promo of Face the Nation with invited guest Adlai Stevenson, former presidential candidate and US Ambassador to the UN.
When I was at the dentist, I had the distinct impression he looked a lot like Herbie. Maybe it’s just this time of year
This was on TV last night while I was at work. So I told my coworker about this thread. We got a few phone calls so we got interrupted a couple times but near the end I was yelling “look he just threw the swimming owl off the sleigh without an umbrella” and she said “maybe they were over water” and I countered “then what about the other toys?!”. Someone else will now never watch this show the same. I feel proud of myself.
we watched it last night again, Pepper Mill constantly commenting on how intolerant everyone was, including Santa. we observed that the female characters didn’t get much screen time, or anything much to do. You’d think Santa would at least compliment Clarice’s great singing.
Pepper Mill commented that Mrs. Claus acted like stereotypically Jewish mother. I replied that of course she was – Santa worked on Christmas.
We’ve had this debate before (it’s starting to feel like Groundhog Day on this one). HERMIE.

He might even float.
But would he bounce?
