Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

Peace talks are underway.

It is now just about noon in Ukraine, I just woke up here on the east coast of the US. There is no fresh news. No word about that column that was approaching Kiev last night.

All in all, I am disappointed with the news coverage here in the US.

Oh, the Russian central bank has raised their prime to 20%. That will leave a mark.

CNN sez;

Russian losses so far, according to Ukraine:

5,300 troops (to be confirmed)
29 planes
29 helicopters
191 tanks
816 armoured fighting vehicles
291 trucks
60 fuel tankers
74 artillery pieces
21 Grad rocket launchers
1 Buk missile system.
5 anti-aircraft systems
2 vessels
3 drones

Ukraine is releasing prisoners to fight at the front.

Bets on if it will open this week?

In contrast, the total number of US casualties in the entire Iraq war was 4,431. They’ve lost more men in four days than we did in seven years.

Meanwhile, in Merrie Olde Englande;

I’m skeptical of that one… the strongest farm tractors can pull about 8 tons, and an MT-LB weighs about 13 tons. Could be a YouTube stunt with someone driving inside.

“Alright, we’re gonna need a tractor and driver, a Russian amphibious armored vehicle and driver, an extra in a Russian uniform, and a cameraman who speaks Ukrainian. It’s gonna be for a 7-second video we’re going to post anonymously and unmonetized. We have no budget and it has to be ready by tomorrow.”

Sounds plausible enough to me.

Aren’t your suspicions aroused that this is only cropped to the 7 seconds of the funny part, not what happens before or after? That kind of stuff has been flying around Reddit for ages. Could be 3 days old, could be 3 years old.

As I said, those things are like 50% heavier than the towing capacity of a very large farm tractor. At a minimum, if this is real, there’s an accomplice inside (armored vehicles aren’t hard to drive under normal road conditions).

First rule of wartime reporting… everyone’s lying because everyone has a motive.

Did they know three years ago that the Russians would be painting Z’s on their tanks when they invaded Ukraine? It has to be contemporary.

TASS - the Russian state news agency - has been hacked (or maybe they got fed up):

We urge you to stop this madness, do not send your sons and husbands to certain death.

Putin is forcing us to lie.

Oh, they know it good and well. They need their noses rubbed in it, firmly and often.

Putin can’t bring back the Soviet Union, but he can bring back bread lines.

In Europe, America and Asia as well. They (and Ukraine) are big agri producers.
Commodities prices ae going to skyrocket.

My understanding is Russian tanks and military vehicles have ‘Zs’ painted on them only because Moscow’s Z-Rock radio station has a wacky contest running right now: just paint a Z on any vehicle, drive it to Kyiv, take a selfie to prove it, and you win a pair of tickets to see Taylor Swift!

It was (and possibly still is but I don’t know) a situation in which they were in NATO politically, but not militarily, or vice versa.
