Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

I think it’s 10%. AIUI, Finland will have a new nuclear power plant online soon. Not to mention more wind turbines.

I’m just fine, thank you for asking. Did I misread your post, in the sense that you are ok with Finland and Sweden joining NATO, as long as it’s considered very carefully? I didn’t see anything in Velocity’s post indicating that he believes the decision should be made in a careless or haphazard manner. From what I’ve read, all the relevant parties have taken / are taking the decision seriously. If you think that the relevant parties (the governments of Finland, Sweden, and the NATO governing body) are in fact not being careful with this decision, I’d be happy to look at those sources.

I’d say the same thing about you. His message was perfectly logical and coherent.

Golly gee, I think he’s just fine, and I understand him completely.

Apparently Russia is preventing the troops from the Russia-controlled parts of Ukraine from retreating into Russia.

Ukraine just won the Eurovision song contest, I would have thought it was a sympathy vote, but it’s pretty good. Russia was kicked out after the invasion,

I think that the Russian troops threatened with execution if they return to Russia are not going to be all that keen to go back into the fight against Ukraine. And they’re not going to be all that keen on Mother Russia into the future either.

Just when you think Putin can’t screw this war up any more…

Well, of course - for all the “working for Russia” aspect the so-called LNR troops are Ukrainians, therefore Nazi traitors if they do anything other than die for the glory of Russia.

Actually, the Russians have been known to shoot retreating Russian troops, too. They don’t treat their own much, if any, better.

They may also be thinking about infiltration by others blending into the groups coming back.

Shooting yourself in the foot was supposed to be popular in WWI.

While doing some additional googling I learned the term “blighty wound”

Blighty - Wikipedia.

That’s what she said.

This map shows the shrinking scope of Russia’s planned pincer movement in eastern Ukraine as time has progressed, except that the plan marked June 2022??? has been underway for the past few days, in mid-May, as evidenced by the various failed attempts at crossing the river at that location.

It totally is. Who knew folk hiphop was a thing? I doubt they would have come first without the added public sympathy vote but the song is pure Eurovision anyway.

Moldova also did very well in the public vote with its “Ramones meet Madness and have a polka baby” entry, which was probably less about regional politics and more about the unabashed goofiness of it.

Ukrainian troops pose at Russian border.

I realize that’s just one area of the border. It’s still quite an achievement from having Russians in the outskirts of Kharkiv a few weeks ago.

The real test for Ukraine is the fighting for Severodonetsk. Can the Western artillery and other weapons prevent its capture? I see this battle as a pivotal moment. Ukraine soldiers are taking a stand and not just falling back to safer positions.

The maps are very helpful in understanding the current fighting.

Ukraine’s song last year was basically techno folk. I guess they like hybridizing their traditional music. (And in my view, it was even better than this year’s. They finished in the top five, minus any sympathy vote, so lots of others liked it too.)

And of course there will never be a better Eurovision entry than Verka Serduchka. EIN ZWEI DREI TANZEN

Hey, there’s a group out there performing Mongolian folk/metal. (I like them. They’re called The Hu, not to be confused with the British group of the homonym name. Try Wolf Totem.)

It’s fun listening to the unexpected combinations. Who’dda thunk, but they sound so good.

Just be aware that there has been some concern about The Hu and their symbols.

I am reminded that Ukraine also (indirectly) gave us the Gypsy Folk Dub Punk of Gogol Bordello. Who have been fundraising for the humanitarian relief effort lately, including releasing a song called “The Man With The Iron Balls” about Zelenskyy.
