Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

Offer them all a free washing machine if they’ll just go back to Russia. Free Delivery even.

Getting drunk lowers your ambitions, but long-term alcohol abuse (and withdrawal from same) ruins your brain in ways that make violence against others more likely:

Yeah, if it was “spotted in central Russia” how would anyone know it was headed to the front line? That would be a couple thousand kilometers away. Also, a tac-nuke wouldn’t go to the front line. It would go to an airfield or mobile launcher no where near the front line.

The Russians are abandoning their lines along the Imhulets from Davidiv Brid northwards due to the threat of encirclement after the Ukrainians advanced along the bank of the Dnipro to Dudchany. No word yet on if this is a goodwill gesture or a repositioning of troops to more advantageous positions.

OSINT twitter is currently debating whether they’ll try to establish a defensive line from Beryslav to Snihurivka to try to protect their meagre river crossings, at the Nova Kahovka bridge and at various ferries between there and Kherson city, or whether they’ll retreat all the way beyond the Imhulets. Either way, supplying Kherson is about to become much more difficult as those river crossings are going to be in range of a lot of artillery pieces instead of just HIMARS/M270.

Report of a Russian collapse northeast of Kherson along the west bank of the Dnipro River. Ukrainian troops may have broken through and advanced ~30 km.

Milblogger Rybar map:

Comrade, it is ALWAYS a “repositioning of troops to more advantageous positions”. Always. Even if the repositioning is done at a flat-out run towards Moscow while shedding gear.

I like how he has the Russians retreating directly through the Ukrainian’s bridgehead over the Imhulets southwest of Davidiv Brid. I will be very surprised if they can stabilize their lines as far north as Rybar is showing here.

From The Guardian:

Two women in Russia-annexed Crimea, including Miss Crimea, have been found guilty of discrediting the Russian army by singing a patriotic Ukrainian song in a video posted on social media, local authorities have said.

Olga Valeyeva, who won the Miss Crimea 2022 beauty pageant, and an unnamed friend sang the popular Ukrainian Chervona Kalyna song on a balcony.

Sometimes small things like this can make a big difference.

Is “our airspace” marked by a vertical planar-ish surface? Seems to me there ought to be a recognized overlap, especially in hostility times, such that a plane that is not directly above “our turf” is not excluded from “our airspace”, based on the principe that it could realistically pose an imminent hazard/threat. In truth, such a principle should apply to “our turf” as well (during/preceding conflict).

Whether air space is internationally recognized as belonging to one country or another is related to, but distinct from, the question of whether targets within it might be subject to attack (and particularly by waring nations) within internationally accepted norms related to the law of armed conflict. Same with land borders and surrounding territorial seas.

Yes, national airspace is a direct vertical extrapolation from recognized boundaries, including the 12-mile maritime boundary.

There is no “overlap” that makes a combatant target more eligible to be attacked. Any belligerent can attack air assets in opposition airspace without any particular permission; the main advantage of operating over friendly ground is that it’s harder to engage someone at such a distance. (If Ukraine had managed a significant border incursion into acknowleged Russian territory, Russian aircraft might be in greater danger of being shot down by coming within range of Ukrainian anti-air assets operating that far forward.)

Yeah, anything like that going viral is a big boost.

From The Guardian:

Crimean police said Valeyeva was fined 40,000 roubles (£590), while her friend was given a 10-day prison sentence.

Seems an odd mix of penalties. I’d much rather pay the fine than spend 10 days in a Russian prison.

Her friend may have been unable to pay the fine (possibly + bribe) - it was likely either/or. Or she mouthed off to the cops and got the extra sanction. Impossible to say, but far as I can tell in Russia highly inconsistent application of the law is not a rarity.

Or someone realized that the headline “Miss Crimea Thrown In Jail For Singing” is not a good look.

Could have been a coin flip for all we know. You’re probably right, no use fining someone if they can’t pony up a little cash for a bribe to make the jail stay go away.

As I said earlier, the more this kind of protest goes viral, the better for the Ukrainians. Having them arrested just made it worse for Russia and their backers.

it really seems that the russian forces are now completely collapsing on the west bank of the Dniepr @ Kherson front …

here is a somewhat updated map (but outdated by a couple of hours!) … AND there are already (russian) telegram posts mentioning that Ukr is entering what is the opposite river bank at Nova Khakhovka (thats the top left corner of the white map legend) … so that’s another 20-25km south of what this today’s map shows

https://twitter.com/Robert84820644/status/1577416209754202113/photo/1

if true - and it fits the theme - than the Ukr are pretty much advancing 40-50 km today and affairs will be extremely ugly for the russians over the next days/weeks

Interesting tidbit: for whatever reason, russians are not firing artillery from the east bank to stop the Ukr. advances …

Significant gains in Kherson. It’ll take a couple days to verify and for the maps to accurately update.

The Russians are already regrouping to defend their lines.

Over and over again, one of the biggest themes of this war is that if the Russians aren’t doing something (like, say, heavily bombarding Kyev) , it’s probably because they don’t have the capability rather than because they choose not to.

This is a couple of days old, and I apologize if it’s already been posted:

On Russian TV, talking about the retreat from Lyman.

More from Newsweek

Basically, he’s saying that people are feeding reports showing that things are going better than they actually are, which then leads to further defeats as the people at the top are working on bad information.

For a couple of weeks, it’s been openly questioned why the Russians had been continuing their offences which have not been making much progress, and not reinforcing the areas which the Ukrainians were attacking.

How can you conduct a war like that?
