Thank you Zoggie, I knew that wasn’t the name, but that people would get the drift. I just wasn’t comming up with the name like the everything is wonderful song.
You know like in that other sad song thread that started after mine where they name the title of the song as if I saw you in heaven, and it’s Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.
That one is Wonderful, also by everclear.
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over — Jeff Buckley
Into the Mystic — Van Morrison
Lullabies. My sister just lost a newborn son, and at the funeral, they played lullabies instead of hymns.
Hearing “When You Wish Upon a Star” ripped my heart out.
So many good ones. I have to agree with “Taps” and “Amzing Grace”. Here are some personal choices:
“The Farmer’s Song” Murray MacLachlan - it was played at my step-father’s funeral - it was his favorite song.
“In My Life” - Also played at his funeral
“Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” - Patty Smyth & Don Henley
“Everybody Hurts” - REM
“Don’t Dream it’s Over” - Not sure. Pet Shop Boys??
“I Hope You Dance” - LeeAnn Womack (It’s going to be my daddy/daughter dance song, I don’t know how I’ll get through it)
“He Would Be 16” - Michelle Wright
“Change”(?) - Garth Brooks
“Look Away” - Chicago
“What Might Have Been” - Shenandoah
“Imagine” by John Lennon
“Promises” by Eric Clapton
“Everybody Hurts” by REM
“Who Wants To Live Forever” by Queen
“Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones
“10,000 Roads” by Mary Chapin Carpenter
“The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics
“I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt
I think that “Drive” by The Cars is the saddest, though.
I’ll Be True to You- Oak Ridge Boys - hands down the saddest ever, also
Tomorrow Wendy - Concrete Blonde
I just heard Tori Amos’ From The Choirgirl Hotel for the first time a couple of days ago and “Northern Lad” is (literally) the first song that’s ever made me actually cry. I guess I was already in a shitty mood that day, but the song just made me really emotional. I think it’s about a failed romance, and she sounds so personal and mournful, and the music is also amazing.
I was watching on TV when a young bugler played a wavering “Taps” at JFK’s funeral. You could tell the poor guy was very nervous about having been chosen for this great honor, and probably choked up with emotion, concentrating hard just to get the notes out. (probably thinking [sub][sup]“oh! man! i’m screwing up JFK’s ‘Taps’!”[/sup][/sub]). It was eloquent.
Crowded House.
Another one of my favorite songs
another vote for “Ana’s Song” by Silverchair, and “One” by U2
“Enjoy The Silence” by Depeche Mode
“Gone Away” The Offspring
“Summer, Highland Falls” Billy Joel
“Save A Prayer” Duran Duran
Etta James: “I’d Rather Be Blind”
The stanzas that never fail to hit me…
I was just sitting here thinking
of your kiss and your warm embrace
when the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips
revealed the tears that were on my face.
Maybe it sounds like typical breakup song stuff, but I was struck by the notion that the loving memory of her lover’s touch had made her feel so much contentment that it also concealed the sorrow triggered by that same memory, that it would never be again.
That, and James’ unparralleled vocal delivery. You must hear this song to believe it. (CDNow has some audio samples of it)
Chicken Shack (with Christine McVie) did a remake of this song, and it’s pretty sad, too.
Oh the cat’s in the cradle with the silver spoon,
little boy blue and the man on the moon-
when ya comin’ home, dad
I don’t know when
but we’ll be together then, you know we’ll have a good time then…
That song upsets me more than anything else in the world. Actually drove off the road (and nearly into a telephone pole) one night when it came on and my father insisted on listening to it.
I also second Eleanor Rigby, by the Beatles; not just sad-it’s haunting.
Bri
Poysyn, just in case you are looking for it What Might Have Been is by Little Texas. I wouldn’t want you not finding such a wonderful song.
Thank you Andygirl! I can be such a dope sometimes. I did that to my husband with " you know the song that goes something “my life”? Um, you mean the Beatles In My Life?
“Bright Eyes” sung by Art Garfunkel from the movie “Watership Down”.
And that aria in La Boheme where Mimi and her friend are searching for her key in the dark, and he touches her hand and realises the extent of her illness … “Mimi your tiny hand is frozen”.
“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” just slays me, and I’m not really even an Elvis fan.
“Angie” by the Stones.
Geez, I’m starting to breathe heavily…
