I certainly am not in a position to argue the GED thing, having earned mine in 1989. And, like you, John, I managed to get into a good college and am currently working towards my bachelor’s degree and hope to get into law school.
However, as Momma Gump said, stupid is as stupid does. Sally is blaming her ignorance on having “only” a GED. So I don’t think it’s the GED itself that people are making fun of, but rather her reliance on it as an excuse for stupidity. She could very easily take that GED, realize that it’s not enough, and enroll in some community college courses and work toward a more advanced education. Or, she could take the same tack that she’s taken throughout the entire thread, and claim that it’s just too difficult for her. Either way, it’s her choice.
Unfortunately for her, that bullshit doesn’t wash on this board. This is, after all, a board devoted to fighting ignorance. Sally doesn’t want her ignorance challenged. She’s content to trot down the Yellow Brick Road of ignorance with a hefty dose of “la la la I can’t hear you” thrown in for good measure.
And that’s her choice. I can’t change it, and neither can anyone else on this board. So all we can do is wait out the week or so she has left on her guest membership and hope that the Powers That Be decide that her $14.95 isn’t worth taking.
I realize y’all are mocking her GED related braggadocio, but it is possible to have a GED and still be able to occasionally use, spell, and know the meaning of the odd word of more than two syllables. I have a GED. SallyStar would be incoherent and ignorant no matter what her educational level.
Yeah, that’s the word I got, too; but you know if our dear SallyStar was there, she’d be the looker in the bunch. Why don’t you invest some bucks, Robin: go buy yourself a whole bushel of “shallow” and host a DopeFest where only pretty people like Sally are allowed to attend?
My mocking was meant to be directed at Sally only, and not all attainees of GED certificates. There are any number of reasons why one would have a GED instead of a regular high school diploma. I have friends who went that route. In a world where too many people just flat out drop out, taking the responsibility to go back and get that GED is quite admirable.
But Sally’s swinging it around like it’s a PhD. I’d mock the same way someone who swung around a high school diploma.
More like it’s an all-purpose excuse.
May I add to the list of critiques of SallyStar’s participation, that she seems to be part of the contingent that can’t tell the difference between explaining or describing a position, and advocating it. This one is actually independent of educational level, I see/hear/read people with doctorates falling for that every day, but it’s damn annoying. Just because I say “people may legitimately argue if X is Y” does not necessarily mean I am affirming that X is Y.
I hope you, and others here, don’t really believe I’m making fun of GEDs, or whatever. I’m just poking fun at our new friend here. (She just keeps bringing it up, and acting like a little kid who just figured out how to tie his shoes)
Thanks for the links Wireless, they brought back a lot of memories. I grew up in back in NJ in the 50’s and use to watch Sally Starr on TV all the time. I’m glad to see she is alive and still on the air.
Far be it from me to point out the obvious to the intelligentsia that densely populate this board like Starbucks in Seattle, but when the subject of your derision makes a point of responding with one-sentence posts, isn’t is clear that the amount of effort you’re putting in is considerably greater than the amount she is putting in, i.e. she’s responding just enough to keep the thread going for her own amusement?
