Nope, it has happened more than once over the years, and it spilled over onto this board via snarkers posting threats of revealing personal information (and I think someone did post some personal info here but it got deleted very quickly by Mods) about a target of their snark here not that long ago. I mean going as far back as 2003 or 2004 and continuing to this year. ETA: On more than one snark place incarnation.

How did they get that information in the first place? I don’t know about all the cases, but the one I know of, the information was provided to the snarks by the “victim” and then dared to publish it. Not too different from leaving the keys on the ignition of your car in the seediest neighbourhood and daring some local hobo to steal it. It is hard to feel sorry for the victim in that case.

True enough. We like Sampiro, and we like the SDMB. That doesn’t mean he or TPTB are beyond critical review. If anything, it makes it harder on them, because they have a reputation to live to.
No matter how much you like someone, they can still do wrong, and if you really like them, you need to call them out on it, before it gets them into even deeper trouble.

More experienced, wise, compassionate, and open-minded.
Sampiro is one of those people. I can assure you that he does not require the “professional help” some of you goddamned idiots so blithely suggest.

Isn’t this a bit over the top for a thread where the pittee has already responded and is making light of it? I mean, if you had responded before he came here to defend himself, I would have said “wow, what a cool friend. Sampiro is lucky to have someone like Ogre”. As it is, it sounds like you don’t find him capable of standing for himself.

I am given to understand that people did things like look at the names on a person’s photo album and figure out their actual name, and they went from there searching online and finding information about their target. Another time it was because they met the person at a Dopefest, and I guess they put several different bits of information the person had given at different times together to find and post what they thought was the person’s name, address, and workplace. (They were mistaken in that case though, and an innocent person’s information was put out online.) Those are just two that I know of and can name off the cuff. This isn’t the one where the target posted their full name etc. and dared people to do something about it, it’s two different incidents. Hateful people will find a way to bring their target more direct pain if they want to. As I said, this is why at least one LJ “Place That Shall Not Be Named” got shut down, because RL information was posted there, and LJ deemed what they were doing to be harassment and against their policy. They still have shelter away from LJ I guess.
