The only time this year I had harsh words about him was brought up when I was arguing with tomndebb.*

*Looking that thread over Sampiro and I did zing each other back and forth a fair bit after my [post=8840913]first comment to tomndebb[/post]. Also, I guess I was a little jerkier in that thread. But still, it was the only other time and it’s not like I was following Sampiro around.

Nope, it has happened more than once over the years, and it spilled over onto this board via snarkers posting threats of revealing personal information (and I think someone did post some personal info here but it got deleted very quickly by Mods) about a target of their snark here not that long ago. I mean going as far back as 2003 or 2004 and continuing to this year. ETA: On more than one snark place incarnation.

Wow what a mess! I couldn’t make it through the multi-OPs but I need read the later posts with the colors. How come I have a reputation for being unintelligible? That thread makes Sampiro look Britney-Spears-Shaving-her-legs-in-a-hotel-swimming-pool-crazy. I mean really really crazy. Wow. So crazy.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. Too much effort for such little content to read that. Too many side references. Hell, the side references have side references. I didn’t have enough breadcrumbs to find my way back home.

I thought the reaction to the Jodie Foster question was off-the-charts hysterical and it seemed to get worse from there. I honest-to-goodness wondered if he/she (Sampiro) was okay.

How did they get that information in the first place? I don’t know about all the cases, but the one I know of, the information was provided to the snarks by the “victim” and then dared to publish it. Not too different from leaving the keys on the ignition of your car in the seediest neighbourhood and daring some local hobo to steal it. It is hard to feel sorry for the victim in that case.

True enough. We like Sampiro, and we like the SDMB. That doesn’t mean he or TPTB are beyond critical review. If anything, it makes it harder on them, because they have a reputation to live to.

No matter how much you like someone, they can still do wrong, and if you really like them, you need to call them out on it, before it gets them into even deeper trouble.

I’ve known Sampiro since long before he or I joined the SDMB. I’ve talked with him, drank with him, eaten with him, met his mother, known “Earl” and many of the people he writes about. I’ve discussed literature, philosophy, science, religion, politics, pop culture, history, and a thousand other things with him, over email, in person, and even in a mildewy jazz club in Montgomery.

I’ve laughed at his jokes, agreed and disagreed with him, and rolled my eyes over the antics of Earl, who is a mutual friend of ours.

Most of what he posts, I’ve already read, since he’s a part of a very dear and close circle of friends of mine. Even though we’re scattered across the country in a dozen directions, I value the input of that circle of friends, and especially that of Sampiro, more than I can say. And I will always stay friends with them.

Now, if you know anything about me at all, you will know that I do not make friends easily. I’m introspective, aloof, arrogant, and frankly consider myself above most people. What can I say? It’s a flaw. The friends I DO tend to keep are people whom I truly feel are worth my respect and time. As a result, I have a very select group of people who I consider lifelong friends. People for whom I’d do anything under the sun. With my money, with my time, or with any and all resources at my command. These are people who are kinder than I am. More sane than I am. More experienced, wise, compassionate, and open-minded.

Sampiro is one of those people. I can assure you that he does not require the “professional help” some of you goddamned idiots so blithely suggest.

And don’t think for a second that I’m not aware that half of you are Snarkpit trolls who have nothing better to with your time than try to get a rise out of Sampiro. Worthless fucking bastards, the lot of you.

If you had half the spine that Sampiro does, you’d go find something worthwhile to do with your lives.

Isn’t this a bit over the top for a thread where the pittee has already responded and is making light of it? I mean, if you had responded before he came here to defend himself, I would have said “wow, what a cool friend. Sampiro is lucky to have someone like Ogre”. As it is, it sounds like you don’t find him capable of standing for himself.

As for your vitriol towards the sister board, no action is required on your part (except maybe delete the bookmark). Just not going there is all it takes. Not that hard, really.

I don’t want to see you get yourself suspended or banned ala bbs2k, who I also liked but who seemingly self-destructed, partially due to outside influences on his thinking and posting I thought. I do respect you as a poster generally and I appreciate yours of me, and I’d like you to stay around. Not to get too corny or anything in the fucking Pit.

I would also hate having another Latino poster leaving, we are pretty scarce here and it’s nice that there’s someone that can discuss Latino (or Spanish)-related things.

Sampiro thanks for the shout out. I do indeed look forward to meeting you one of these days. We can sip muscadine wine and nibble on lemon teacakes while sitting on the verandah. Ok, I don’t have a verandah and AIR you live in a townhouse which probably doesn’t have a verandah, so we’ll have to find a verandah. All I know is, it really should take place on a verandah.

Oh my God… oh my God… I totally wasn’t expecting this… I joined this board on 29 August 2002… what’s that… almost 5 and a 1/2 years… I’ve had over 11,000 posts, and… I wasn’t prepared for this- it’s my first ever PIT THREAD!

I am given to understand that people did things like look at the names on a person’s photo album and figure out their actual name, and they went from there searching online and finding information about their target. Another time it was because they met the person at a Dopefest, and I guess they put several different bits of information the person had given at different times together to find and post what they thought was the person’s name, address, and workplace. (They were mistaken in that case though, and an innocent person’s information was put out online.) Those are just two that I know of and can name off the cuff. This isn’t the one where the target posted their full name etc. and dared people to do something about it, it’s two different incidents. Hateful people will find a way to bring their target more direct pain if they want to. As I said, this is why at least one LJ “Place That Shall Not Be Named” got shut down, because RL information was posted there, and LJ deemed what they were doing to be harassment and against their policy. They still have shelter away from LJ I guess.
