Sappy songs you are unapologetic about loving

It’s two bands & a genre I otherwise have no time for, but damn if I don’t love Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing and Chicago’s If You Leave Me Now.

Fernando by ABBA. A song about the Mexican-American war sung by Swedish girls in a language they dont understand always brings a tear to my eyes.

Ed chimes in.

There’s something about sunshine that I like:

and

Not the Spanish Civil War? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Mothers-in-law ruin everything! :rage:

These all evoke an emotional response in me:

A horrible woman, gone now ~10 years. She always hated me, possibly because I ruined her plans for a “dry reception” with the cases of beer, wine, liquor, and mixers I accidentally had in my vehicle. :champagne:

Yep. Mothers-in-law are EVIL! :japanese_ogre:

They crossed the Rio Grande.

Patsy Cline, She’s Got You

There are no big rivers in Spain?

They don’t get much sappier than this one. I like to break out into a chorus at social gatherings just to inject a note of cheesiness into the proceedings. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

No. None at all! Only el Pequeño Río is in Spain. But I understand that Europeans might have a differant interpretation of the song .

I thought someone would mention that the girls actually understood English.

You’d be hard pressed to find any Scandinavian who doesn’t know English. It’s a required course in public (and I assume private) schools.

Benny and Bjorn have said that learning English as a foreign language actually helped them compose lyrics for their songs, since they felt free to use word combinations that might never have occurred to a native speaker.

Addendum: When I heard “crossed the Rio Grande,” I immediately thought of Pancho Villa. The Mexican War of 1846-48 is now so obscure I doubt many Americans even know about it.

According to Wiki, it was about the Texas Revolution.

I have an affinity for trucking songs. I think my favorite is “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses.”

On the subject of country, Reba’s version of “Cathy’s Clown” kills me.

Oh, and Wynonna - “She Is His Only Need”

I like that one, too, but it’t nowhere near as sappy as “Roll On”.

Speaking of sappy truck songs (though not a pair I especially like): “Giddyup Go” and “Teddy Bear”, both by Red Sovine.

I’ve Been To Town - Rod McKuen, sung by Glenn Yarbrough

Pete Seeger singing Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young”.

Yep, both of these. Plus “This Land Is Your Land”, Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful”, Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” and Arlo Guthrie’s “Riding On The City Of New Orleans”.

ETA: the afore mentioned “Stand By Me” and
