It’s two bands & a genre I otherwise have no time for, but damn if I don’t love Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing and Chicago’s If You Leave Me Now.
Fernando by ABBA. A song about the Mexican-American war sung by Swedish girls in a language they dont understand always brings a tear to my eyes.
Not the Spanish Civil War?
Mothers-in-law ruin everything!
A horrible woman, gone now ~10 years. She always hated me, possibly because I ruined her plans for a “dry reception” with the cases of beer, wine, liquor, and mixers I accidentally had in my vehicle.
Yep. Mothers-in-law are EVIL!
They crossed the Rio Grande.
There are no big rivers in Spain?
They don’t get much sappier than this one. I like to break out into a chorus at social gatherings just to inject a note of cheesiness into the proceedings. ![]()
No. None at all! Only el Pequeño Río is in Spain.
But I understand that Europeans might have a differant interpretation of the song .
I thought someone would mention that the girls actually understood English.
You’d be hard pressed to find any Scandinavian who doesn’t know English. It’s a required course in public (and I assume private) schools.
Benny and Bjorn have said that learning English as a foreign language actually helped them compose lyrics for their songs, since they felt free to use word combinations that might never have occurred to a native speaker.
Addendum: When I heard “crossed the Rio Grande,” I immediately thought of Pancho Villa. The Mexican War of 1846-48 is now so obscure I doubt many Americans even know about it.
According to Wiki, it was about the Texas Revolution.
I have an affinity for trucking songs. I think my favorite is “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses.”
On the subject of country, Reba’s version of “Cathy’s Clown” kills me.
Oh, and Wynonna - “She Is His Only Need”
I like that one, too, but it’t nowhere near as sappy as “Roll On”.
Speaking of sappy truck songs (though not a pair I especially like): “Giddyup Go” and “Teddy Bear”, both by Red Sovine.
