I figured we were overdue starting episode-based threads for this show.
If the Evil Terminator knew how to make his own meatbag, and already had the blood, then why did he need the scientist’s help? To cut open his eyelids for him?
It bugs me that Cameron acts so autistic and Data-like at her new high school as John’s “sister,” but acted perfectly normal when she introduced herself to John at the other high school in 1999. Some consistency, please? And the more the producers can distinguish Cameron from River Tam, the better. Otherwise I could just re-watch my Firefly DVDs.
On the other hand, she looked really cute in that miniskirt and in the purple leather jacket. Sarah may be a hardened fugitive, but she knows how to dress (herself and her “daughter”).
I liked the references to the atomic scientists, although I’m not 100% sure the metaphor is apt, since Oppenheimer et al. were saving humans from other humans, while Sarah thinks she’s saving all humans from something nonhuman.
Who is the evil Terminator anyway? Is that the original T-101 from the first movie?
I’ve settled on a policy of scrupulously ignoring inconsistencies, plot holes, and faulty logic. Also, the bad acting. If the show lasts, maybe they’ll find their groove. It’s reasonably entertaining so far.
This show is hilariously bad. I was watching it with a friend last night and the opening line had me cracking up.
Something like:
“When I was in the metal institution, I became obsessed with science. But not just any kind of science. And not science at all.”
What model Terminator is Summer Glau supposed to be? She’s amazingly innept at interacting with people. The T-1000 in T2 was able to act like a normal person when the situation warranted it.
What she was saying was that she became obsessed with the Manhattan project, not the actual physics, but the psychology of people who would build such a destructive weapon and who would look at it as just a fascinating problem to solve. It’s an old theme in literature, going back at least as far as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, if not to the myth of Deadalus and Icarus.
I agree that the Glauminator acts much more like River Tam than a terminator.
I think the scientist had bio-tech equipment that is not easily scrounged up. He even said he needed to go get stuff from his lab to do it.
The depiction of Cameron acting normal in 1999 was told from John’s viewpoint. I’ll allow that he, being a stupid horny teenager, did not recognize the robot mannerisms. Or maybe the terminators can act normal if they pre-load a series of responses and play them back. For example, I’m terrible at speaking Mandarin, but if I practice a phrase beforehand, I can say it perfectly. But if I were speaking on the fly, I’d have trouble keeping up with the conversation.
On the whole, I prefer watching something new, even if certain actor’s styles are carried over.
And Larry, this show has a new evil Terminator sent from the new Skynet (whose birth was delayed by the events in the 2nd movie). Consequently, they could conceivably break canon rules established in earlier films, because the terminators come from a different future with different technology. So, as a wild example, if it had been stated in the movies that all terminators were built alike (to resemble Arnold), it’s okay to see different looking terminators now.
Yeah, she’s got the “Anya sydrome”. We first see her acting normally and she managed to get enrolled in high school by herself and interact with John without raising his suspicions. Now she’s a naif, unschooled in the ways of the perplexing and cruel human world.
It wasn’t very good, though I don’t think it was as bad as you’re remembering it. (It might have been, I was making food and wasn’t fully attentive.) Of course portentious and pretentious monologs are part of the franchise, as in the ending of T2. I think a better actress might have been able to sell the line.
It is *just * interesting enough to keep me watching. That and the fact that it’s on right after Prison Break, which I still watch for some demented reason.
I was REALLY hoping that they’d turn the situation on its ear. They could’ve shown John patiently explaining high school interactions to her, warning her to not be a “freak”, and obviously being very worried about how badly she’s going to fit in…
… And then when they get into school, she goes into full social adaptation mode, and by the end of the episode is fitting in better than John. But no, they just had to go the standard route.
Hell, she’s a Terminator. She’s supposed to blend in with humans- it’s her damn job!
Did anyone figure out what the incremental words were on the paintings that taunted the girl into suiciding? First was “A”, then “DAN”, then “IDAN” or something. I got nuthin’.
I actually really liked it - I thought that the GlauBot actually wasn’t all that good at impersonating a high school student in the pilot. She basically grilled John the first time he met her, and her mannerisms seemed “off”. But she “fooled” him just because nobody expects to run into a cyborg from the future at high school - John probably just thought she was a little weird. And hey, she’s hot!
More importantly - I find it very encouraging that the show is willing to be dark. GlauBot keeping John from stopping SuicideGirl was a good touch.
I was too busy looking at Lena’s delicious naked legs to remember the jibber-jabber. Clearly, your food preparation activities rendered you immune to the actress’ feminine wiles.
As for River Tam stalking the hallways, I seem to remember a lot of weird kids in high school. There’s probably just as many weird emo goths as 90210 “popular” kids or Buffy “snarky adult vocabulary” kids.
I think the door was open and we were seeing the letters backwards - “NADII” (from right to left). I’m not sure why I’m thinking that, but it’s ringing a very faint bell with me. Or not. We’ll see.
I really want to like this show, but the inconsistencies and the writers’ downright lack of respect for their audience is getting to me. How did the Terminator’s metal head get through the time warp - none of their guns or clothes came with them. Why is John still being such a little shit about his mom figuring out exits and stuff? Does he not GET IT YET?!??? Argh!
