That was always my understanding. My understanding of the terms for sex workers goes like this:
sex worker: anyone working in the “sex trade”: stripper, XXX movie actor, prostitute, phone sex worker, etc.
prostitute - I think we are all pretty clear on what that is
escort - what Chessic Sense said
In my mind calling a prostitute a sex worker is accurate but not specific to what they do.
Going back to my original point, my impression of prostitutes would be that they usually work within their sexual orientation (e.g. a heterosexual female prostitute would be servicing male customers etc.) and that one should not assume that they will service customers outside their sexual orientation. (Therefore I was puzzled when a female prostitute accuse the male prostitute of discrimination because the male prostitute only wanted female clients.) Am I wrong on this?
The reality, however, is that vastly more men hire sex workers than women do. So if a man wants to make a go of it in the business, unless he finds himself a couple of committed regulars, he’s going to have to work with male clients. There just aren’t enough female clients to make a living from.
None of that suggests any kind of double standard. I for one have not said anything at all, implicitly or explicitly, about how female sex workers view their clients. I have only shared my *male *sex worker friends’ experiences. So I have no vague inkling where you’re pulling that misconception out of.
If you’re trying to find someone who believes that women have it easier than men, you’re going to have to keep looking. I can’t help you.
Maybe Markus will change all that! In any case, the prostitute that criticized Markus was not disagreeing with his business model, she was saying that he was being bigoted. I think her assessment is wrong, or in any case what Markus is doing would apply to most prostitutes. Isn’t that true?
If you ask me, what she was expressing was the idea that he is naive, or dishonest: that she probably finds a way to work with anyone who wants to hire her, which is more professional. And further, if he’s not comfortable enough in his work to see male clients, he’s putting his own prejudices above the professionalism of his profession. I’m putting words in her mouth here (insert lame oral joke), but from the point of view of the professional ethics of sex work, “ick factor” is not, as she seems to suggest, a valid reason to turn down a client.
This is only in this context, though: no one would suggest that a man who’s not a sex worker is homophobic unless he has sex with men. But this is something that the gay4pay escorts that I’ve known learn very quickly: they think they’re getting into it for fun–hot chicks are gonna PAY me to have sex with them–but the reality it’s a job, not a lark, and a difficult job at that. Markus still thinks that his desires are more important than the client’s. I think that’s what she took issue with.
So what you seem to be saying is that the majority of female prostitutes will willingly have sex with other women. Is that true? For example, can I go to a Las Vegas brother and expect that any two female prostitutes will be willing to “put on a show” for me? I was thinking that if, let’s say, I called two female (non-gay) prostitutes and said “I will pay you to have sex with each other” that there would be a significant number that would reply “I don’t do that.” In the same way that some prostitutes will accept to engage in S&M-type scenarios during sex and some won’t. But like I said I’m not that familiar with prostitution.
As I clicked on this thread, I thought, “This dude better be hot.”
Now, I like me the big, meathead, buff, ex Marine men, but uh, he looks like his mom drank during her pregnancy. No, thanks. It just so happens that I can do vastly better for free.
You should check out the docu-show (or original documentary) Cathouse on HBO, about an all-female brothel up in Carson City. It appears that a lot of the women there will happily have sex with men or women- some are indifferent, some love women a lot, some just love sex in any form. There are a few girls on there who just flat out refuse to have sex with a woman.
It’s like anal: some of the working girls love it, some don’t care, some absolutely wont, but will point you to a girl that will.
I’m going to try one last time.
I’m not talking about how you or your friends view female sex workers’ views of their clients. I have never been talking about that. ASK YOUR FRIENDS WHO SAID THAT FEMALE CLIENTS OF MALE SEX WORKERS WERE “HORRIFYING” IF THEY FIND MALE CLIENTS OF FEMALE SEX WORKERS ALSO “HORRIFYING” and then get back to me.
Do the caps help? The double standard is the PERCEPTION of the clients by your friends. I find it puzzling that one group is not mentioned, seemingly status quo, and the other is “horrifying”. Why? How so? Which leads me to ask this: do men (or at least your friends to whom you are referring) seriously think that female sex workers find their male clientele attractive etc?
Believe me, women don’t have “it” easier than men–whatever that may mean, in whatever context you intend it.
It’s been stated in this thread that since almost any woman can find a man to have sex with her free of charge, a woman who has no choice but to pay for it must be exceptionally unpleasant. I don’t know if that’s true. I think the appeal of a paid “escort” would be that by using a pro, a woman would ensure that she’s getting a guy who will attend to her needs as opposed to his own, and one who is unlikely to be a psycho, as well. Can’t vouch for Markus. I don’t think that women with no other options would be the only ones likely to be willing to pay.
No, it was not. Please reread. If you must tell me what I said, it’s probably more helpful to cut and paste than to reinterpret in your own words. That might also be a good way for you to be sure you’ve actually read it, if you have to select the specific text you’re referring to.
