Be advised that I will be forwarding a bill for the chemicals necessary to assuage my suffering and cleanse my pristine mind from the vile imagery you have so heedlessly, cruelly, and recklessly thrust into my conciousness. To wit: seven doses ketamine, 16 tablets vicodin, and an ounce of weapons-grade marijuana.
Refusal to redress your grevious trespass will result in an immediate referral of the matter to my attorneys, the firm of Dewey, Green, and Gelding. Their reputation for rapacity and Javert-like dedication should be sufficient to motivate your immediate compliance, if appeals to your better nature be unavailing.
Haven’t any of you Communist Pinkos noticed that the Republican authors that you are picking on have all written about safe sex? The possible exception might be the samurai’s daughter, but I’m assuming that she was a juvenile.
Thanks to the wonders of Amazon Search Inside, I read the relevant passages (pages 81 onward in case your interested) on bear rape and was distinctly underwhelmed. Theres no sense of anything erotic about it, in fact, it’s presented in a largely dispassionate and clinical tone. In fact, it reminds me of Orson Scott Cards work more than anything else. Another conservative christian author who’s written some pretty far out stuff.
What makes you think people who find this novel disgusting don’t also find American Psycho disgusting? I don’t really see an indication either way in this thread.
The Texas GOP yearly produces a platform, which is a marvel of delusional political thinking. A return to the gold standard, hunting season for hippies, queers, and teachers (OK, that’s an exaggeration…read it and weep/scream/laugh…)
The pernicious and corruptive effect of Texas politics on the national scene is a rant I’ve done to the point of tedium. So I won’t. Tom DeLay (R-Undead). 'Nuff Sed.
I’m not saying that anybody who votes Republican wants the government peeking into people’s bedrooms. But I think the statement that the Republican Party isn’t interested in people’s sex lives is patently false.
I’m more or less a Democrat. And I’d prefer to discontinue afirmative action programs. But it would be silly of me to claim the Democratic Party isn’t in favor of afirmative action.
Well, I don’t have much to add directly to the book end of this discussion, except that it sounds oogy and gives us some window into what kind of person Libby is. Can’t say I’m surprised his sexual interests are as revolting as his ethics.
But this deserves an answer:
Probably not. You see, Bricker is a complete whore for the Republican Party. It doesn’t matter what idiotic thing is ascribed to some Republican, he’ll defend it. I dare say Bush could jerk off on an intern and tell a whole lot of stupid lies about it in court, and Bricker would defend it. I hate Bricker’s shit and wish he’d have to eat it.
For balance’s sake, I should note that Rjung is just as big a whore for the Democratic Party. I hate his dumb ass, too. We have a whole brace of these whores, people like these two, and Martin Hyde, and ElvisLives, and Mr Moto, and a whole bunch of others who don’t seem to have anything better to do than post all day shitting up Great Debates. Never read a political thread in Great Debates, because it’s never great and there’s no honest debate. GD is just a big asswipe pileup. God knows why we put up with them.
I wonder how vociferous the Righties condemnation would be if Hillary Clinton had passages about Deer Pissing or being deflowered by bears in It Takes a Village.
Correct. However, he doesn’t just “belong to a political party.” He is an integral part of the administration currently in power, and advises one of the highest elected officials in our country. That puts him in a rather unique position and opens his actions to criticism.

And since Libby has never expressed his personal views regarding sex/violence and its portrayal in popular culture, we have no way of knowing whether or not he approves of bestiality.[/qiuote]
Wow. Just wow. Tell me. Can I get some of whatever you’re smoking? It sounds like fun.
I don’t see how anybody could read the passage and think that Libby actually advocates bear rape. Orson Scott Card has written about sodomy and rape of pre-pubescent boys, I’m pretty sure he would be pretty against those kinds of things, being a devout Mormon and all. The entire point of fiction is to explore the extraordinary and there is a strong tradition in fiction to explore the excesses of human depravity. I don’t see what the huge deal is.
I’m not accusing him of advocation. I’m saying that there’s a certain amount of irony that the passages are written by someone who is in his rather unique position. As to the offending pages: Yes. I would be put off by it no matter who wrote it. I was put off by the scene in Kill Bill which depicted a 10 year old O-ren having sex with a mob boss (pretty well done anime, too). And I’m a huge Tarantino fan. Pedophelia bothers me. shrug Call me a prude.
If you go out in the woods today, you better not go alone.
It’s lovely out in the woods today, but safer to stay at home.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there together because
Today’s the day the Teddy bears rape the 10-year old girls.
I don’t care that he wrote this book. It doesn’t bother me at all. What does bother me it that it would be illeagal to be owned by a convicted sex-offender. (in some states)
The deal is that conservative Republicans have generally been opposed, at least in their public pronouncements, to the fictional tradition of “exploring the excesses of human depravity”. They think it degrades moral values and is bad for society.
When conservatives like Cheney criticize “Hollywood people” for being “irresponsible” by creating fictional works full of sex and violence, and then condone other conservatives’ creating fictional works that are also full of sex and violence, that’s known as hypocrisy.
