Scott, on the VERY off chance that you’re still reading this, I’d like to bring a few things to your attention. Although, considering that many others have already said these exact same things, and you seem to not give a damn, I don’t know why I’m trying, but what the hell.
First, if YOU and YOU ALONE are declaring yourself the “victor” in a debate, odds are you aren’t. It’s FAR more likely that you’ve won if OTHER people are saying, “wow, good point,” or “I see where you’re coming from.”
Second, a debate does not necessarily have to have a “winner” and a “loser.”
Third, it’s often considered polite when first joining a new message board to LURK for a while, get a feel for the place, see how things are done, see how issues are settled.
Apparently, you have NEVER done this. Not from day one.*
*Pit threads that aren’t in the pit (hey, remember the original reason you were dragged in here?), continuing to claim facts that have been repeatedly shown to be false, little pouty “pay attention to ME” posts when somebody didn’t acknowledge one of your little pop culture bons mots, trying to junior-mod the multitudes of threads that you started…
Oh, and one last thing – This informational filmstrip. Although originally prepared for another forum, much of it applies universally.
And, in closing, since most of this post is repeated stuff anyway…

My judgement of how I am coming across must be dreadful. Neither of the posts linked to were intended as rhetorical or leading questions. I was genuinely trying to get a question answered, not (or not intending) to advocate a postion. I can even remember feeling like it should be in GQ instead of GD.
I didn’t feel like I would be learning anything if I gave up posting to Great Debates altogether, and I really thought I was doing OK. And writing every sentence so it would end with a question mark sounded stupid-to-the-point-of-parody. Shoot. :mad:
If someone cares to, could you parse my posts and let me know how I could have done it correctly? My idea was to sum up what I had read so far, and then ask about the remaining unclear parts.

I think they were fine. The expository segments are clearly there for helping to define your question. They do not, in my opinion, display point of view.

I didn’t see any problem with those posts either, Shodan. I asked Scott in Post 378 which parts of your posts he specifically objected to (question-wise). Perhaps he can fill us in on his interpretation. I thought they were fine.

I didn’t want to “rule” on your posts earlier because I didn’t have the time to look at them closely. After reading them, they look more or less OK, but you’re not making it easy to tell since the posts are so long and do have a lot of non-question comments.
The spirit of the rule, though, was that neither of you guys would try to persuade another poster to alter his or her views. Rather, you’d spend a week, in GD, of just trying to understand the other posters’ points of view. As long as you’re doing that, you’re fine
I’d stay away from inventing new hypotheticals, though, as it can be hard to tell if that’s supposed to be for clarification purposes, or for persuasion purposes.
