Scott Plaid, Stand Up or Shut Up

Er, or not: Sorry folks

What, Scott gets three strikes because he’s not paying attention?
His not paying attention is part of the problem!
Throw the book at him Judge.

You know, this is a good point. **Scott **makes an error, and immediately blames the “New Post” button instead of himself. Scott: If you’re using this week as a true learning experience, take responsibility for your actions.

But at least he did correct himself, and rather quickly, too. There really isn’t a book to throw. This isn’t a contest, and my role is just to keep both of these guys in the “questions only” mode and rule on posts that might not qualify. **Scott **already admitted that his first post in that thread was out of line, so there isn’t anything for me to rule on other than what I posted in the first paragraph.

For whomever is keeping count of non-sequiturs:

A short thread (so far).

Hrm. Well I have a rule of thumb for any English printed on anything in Japan: The shorter the phrase, the greater the odds that there will be an error. (“Page of White” <- White paper)

This must be The Scott Rule: “The smaller the post that Scott Plaid makes, the greater the odds that it will be unconnected to anything in the thread.”

Er… false dilemma.

I hoped that no one on the boards had that sort of sympathy or particular insight that led them to any inferences that would allow them to answer that they found him smart… I certainly didn’t want to encourage a lie.

Touché.

Total tangent, but I find it interesting that this thread now has almost as many views as the Pit Rules sticky.

Also very interesting that Scott hasn’t been back lately to defend himself.

That’s because he already Won.
Like, duh.

I think it’s because this touches on a very important problem in one of the prime forums. When I first joined the Dope, I was all over GD. Being new, I hadn’t seen all the previous discussions on my pet subjects, nor did I see the basic attitude that fills so many posts (and posters) in that forum.

What is the basic problem I see? Certain ideals and ideas are not very likely to be changed for a great number of people. Take belief in a God, for instance. With no clear evidence for either believing or not, this is a subject which generates quite a lot of heat when discussed. Assumptions and judgements are made by both sides. Rarely is the other side enlightened by the discussion, it simply becomes a multi place soapbox for each individual to proclaim their own thoughts.

Same way with basic political beliefs. Rarely does one side ever sway the mindset of the others.

So, many threads become a contest of wills, more or less. With each cherished belief being defended with as much bravado as possible for the individuals holding them.

Sure, it doesn’t happen all the time, nor in every thread. Sometimes, posters are able to express their thoughts in such a way that enlightens others to a different world view, but this is a rare occurance, imho. Not a slam against any of you participating in this thread, btw, merely an observation from a former GD regular. Yeah, I still go into GD every now and then, but not often. It’s tiring to shout into the wind.

So, like me, perhaps many Dopers are following this DebatePit because of our fondness for good, well thought out discussions about major issues and our experience that rarely is a GD thread full of well thought out posts.

IMHO/YMMV/whateverelseyouwanttoseehere

Hmmm. But it isn’t just some random GD’er who’s being Pitted here. I’m not sure what effect, exactly, that plays.

It’s not just the GD folks who find him annoying – I personally never go in there, and SP irritates the hell out of me. The first time I noticed him, he was trying to tell me something about coding that indicated he had no freakin’ idea what I was talking about; the second time was in a thread for a MADopers gathering at the WeirdNorths’; he announced he wasn’t sure whether he could come, and then clarified a day or so later that he still wasn’t sure if he could come. Both of these led directly to me thinking, “well, okay then, shut up.”

Let me clarify a little. I’m following this thread because SP appears to be the current epitome of the aforementioned phenomena. Perhaps others are viewing this thread for similar reasons. Others, as noted above, are annoyed at him in general.

I once told him in Cafe Society that he had finally made a post I understood. He CAN do it. However, his “greater than thou” general attitude is coming across loud and clear through this Pitting. Still, he doesn’t actually annoy me, because when I can’t decode his cypher, I simply pass over his posts. (Wow. A lot of Biblical imagery in this paragraph. Unintentional, I assure you. ;j )

Regardless of any of the issues involved, this thread is interesting. And that was what prompted my reply to Finn’s thread view observaton.

Besides, we all know that the best debates happen in the Pit.

NoClueBoy, ya doodie head!

Ooooooh, good one. Who’s keeping score? There needs, to be a winner, you know.

I thought, John, Mace was the, scorekeeper. :dubious:

Meanwhile, I just recognized where the title for this thread may come from. Yay for me!

Would it involve, say, a KISS? If so, we’re on the same wavelength.

I come very late to this threadl, and, man, there sure is a lot of it!

All I can say is it makes me glad that the worst thing they say about me seems to reference excessive free thc in my blood, to which I cheerfully plead guilty.

carry on, as they say…
