In my view, Scott doesn’t see this as devastating. If asked, I think he’d say that some people were against him and some were for him, that he’s made good arguments and been right, and many people see that. Therefore, in Scott’s mind, nothing particularly bad has happened here.
So before we go on – when you say “recover from” - who and what do you mean? I suspect that in Scott’s view, he has nothing to recover from. And in the collective view of the board, I’d opine that there can be no recovery without there first being a genuine understanding that there is something to recover from.
Too many odd posters, here, to tell. Some posters will see Scott as irredeemably ignorant and unrepentantly arrogant in his ignorance from now until the board folds. Some posters will look at Scott’s posting from this day forward and judge him on that. And, of course, there will always be a few silly posters who judge him on whether he is “f’r” or “ag’in’” their positions, seeing him only as ally or foe without regard to context.
Scott has not yet demonstrated a grasp of one point: the truly remarkable, to me, amount of agreement among posters of all perspectives regarding his posts and attitudes. Aside from obvious nutcases such as Seethruart, I have never seen the board show this much single-minded attitude toward any poster. That very unanimity places Scott into the realm either of Seethruart and FORMERAGENT or into some odd category of his own–but not in a good way.
With luck, when he gets past his defensive posture, he might learn something.
If over 950 posts with near unanimous agreement on a central point from posters of all religious, political, philosophical, and psychological viewpoints does not command his attention, then the problem is one of psychological impairment, cognitive impairment, or willful ignorance. Just like a drunk, at some point it “becomes” his problem to do something about it.
Liberal , I said I haven’t been here long but long enough to realize it would be foolish to make comparisons between yourself and Scott . However, your point is well taken.
Bricker , I expect you were being rhetorical when you asked “recover from” - who and what? Perhaps I would have been clearer if I said " Will Scott ever be accepted by the board again?" I was asking from the POV of the board members. I too see the denial in his writing. The acceptance of his shortcomings would be asking a lot.
Tomndebb , That helps to put some perspective on the situation. Just as an observer, it was a pretty wild ride. I don’t recognize the names you put forward but the context in which you offer them tells me enough.
Again, thank each of you for your opinions. Helps me better grasp the repercussions of what happened here.
I’m new, too, so this is an opinion based on limited experience. If Scott were to post a response to a post in Great Debates that stated a clear position, described and argued in complete sentences with correct spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation, with no logical flaws or fallacies, with a cite that was germane to the discussion, which actually supported his position and which was from a moderately credible source, I believe that a number of people who have taken part in this would happily address that post with respect.
This is the final high point of a thread that’s just become depressing. Scott is missing some of his mental faculties. It’s no longer fun to see him flailing.
But if he is, is it likely that he doesn’t know it?
In other words, he is (or at least claims to be) a college student, with a part-time job teaching kids. Is it possible that he has gone through high school, graduated, was accepted to college, and gained a job in which he is responsible, in some way, for the education of children while at the same time having this gaping hole in his faculties?
He seems to be posting less, or is it just me? Seemed like for a while there I couldn’t open a thread that Scott hadn’t already tainted. He seems to have faded into the background recently, which is a relief. Or is he still stirring up shit in GD? I don’t hang out in there so I wouldn’t know.
You’re the conservative, I the liberal–shouldn’t you be the one saying that public school’s abysmally low standards would allow a tweaker like him to graduate and teach for a bit, and I be the one saying that public school is better than that?
Sadly, I can’t in good conscience agree with you: it seems perfectly plausible to me that he graduated high school, made it into college, and worked (as part of a class, I thought) “teaching” children.
Hell, it’s even possible that his linguistic foibles are limited to the written language, and that in-person, he’s insufferably arrogant but at least comprehensible. I tutored a couple college students that met that description, back in the day.
