You hang around a message board for a few years, start a thread or two, post here and there, and figure everyone else is getting on with their posting and whatnot, and then suddenly you find out that a bunch of the oldtimers harbour relentless hatred for one another. Is there some kind of newsletter you can subscribe to?

I got to meet Fiver yesterday and she’s hilarious and awesome and you all really have no idea what you guys are missing out on. Think about what this pettiness causes us to miss… the loss of a better community is not worth the gain in one person’s self-esteem. This is a dumb pitting.
And Fiver, don’t let the snark scare you. It used to terrify me until I realized how petty and ridiculous people can be on this board. Sometimes I just read Pit threads and laugh and laugh and laugh. The more of us who post regularly and try to avoid being unnecessarily vitriolic, the better the board will be.
I just read this thread and have to a conclusion that there are two really clueless members of SDMB.
I’m looking specifically at Guinastasia and Lissener. They seem to be treating this board like some kind of torrent site that questions alone equal leeching a Verhoeven film and if you’re not sharing, you’re worthless.
I’ve posted threads looking for answers to a specific question and the reason I’ve posted is because I don’t know the answer. (Go figure). I guess I could continually post in that thread with non-sequitors that are meaningless just to “participate” but it seems like useless post padding. Nothing either of you would know about, I’m sure.
Frankly I’m embarrassed on behalf of the board for your attitudes and extend an apology to scrambledeggs for this thread and your atrocious behavior.
Frankly, most of the people on this board with extremely high post counts are pretty unbearable. That’s not to say there aren’t exceptions, but it’s been a fair rule of thumb for me, personally, that a post by someone with <10,000 is going to be more thoughtful, more interesting, less delusionally self-involved, and less gratuitous than a topically similar post by someone with 10,000+.
I realize that this may be hypocritical, as some would consider even my post count to be excessive; and that would be a somewhat legitimate point.

Geeze Lust, as stupid as this thread was, and I disagree completely with the OP, but she did say “no big deal, just a small request”. You might be overreacting just a bit.
My guess is that Guin likens it to a person walking into a party, starting a conversation with a group of people, and leaving 2 minutes later to go start another one with another group. I could see that as rude. Despite the fact that message boards don’t work that way, that appears to be the definition under which Guin operates. So long as we’re making up definitions of rudeness, I find it incredibly rude when people wait until the second or third page of a thread and chime in with a “me too” post that agrees with whatever the majority opinion thus far is. Hey, this is fun! When you make up your own definition, you’re never wrong!
One thing I discovered about myself that other have said rings true for them is that we are always most annoyed by behaviors in other people that mirror that which we like least about ourselves. Guin no doubt knows that people are annoyed by her useless chatter, so when a new guy shows up and posts what she perceives as useless chatter, it annoys her.
Or she could just be a hypocrite.
